As was discussed in this thread earlier, many of these shooters suffered severe trauma as children. Please tell me about all of the poor life decisions a 5 year old makes that A) puts them in the traumatizing experience to begin with and B) leads them on the path to mass murder. A shooter being mentally ill doesn't mean anyone who is mentally ill is a shooter. I think you're the only one falling into that logical fallacy. What's lazy is ignoring all of the factors that make us uniquely human. Neither one of us may ever resort to a mass shooting, but that doesn't mean we react to our surroundings and different situations identically or even similarly. How we react is a combination of genetics and life experiences -- each combination being unique to the individual in question. Sometimes those combinations have the potential for lethal results; especially if we begin mixing in prescriptions. The discussion, and perhaps your concern, shouldn't end with a labeling of "this person is mentally ill". The discussion needs to evolve into realizing this, and looking for patterns throughout a persons life that makes them more likely to fall into one of those lethal combinations I mentioned above. Then... then we help people. Help people better understand their situations... their traumas... and help them better deal with life in the aftermath of that trauma. And in turn prepare them to make those better choices that you were talking about. Often times though, they don't have the tools or opportunity to do so -- and that needs to change.

Random note. Tom Steyer is one pool away from qualifying for the debates... he just entered the race in mid July and he’s already pumped 10m dollars into this campaign. He’s been pushing ads like crazy here (Iowa) and multiple of the polls he’s gotten already to qualify have been based here. I hope he crashes and burns but that may be unfair because I’m not familiar with his positions at all.

Ha. /Ngata direct reply I think it’s extremely weak to say that these drugs have no correlation simply because a lot of people are on them and they don’t partake in mass shootings. Lots of people have “assault weapons” who don’t partake in mass shootings. So why are we risking those people’s liberty and rights? The human brain is extremely complex and each of us can have varying degrees of reaction to different drugs based on our brain chemistry. That’s not even to mention dosing issues... or perhaps missing a few days and then going back on them... or not being able to pay for them and going long stretches without them. All of that screws with your brain. Nature (genes) and Nurture (our surroundings and how we’re raised) do have a significant impact on our brains. Just because you can take psychotropic drugs and not commit a mass shooting doesn’t mean I can do the same.

There was a study by the Citizens Commission on Human Rights linking suicides and mass shootings and general violence to psychotropic drugs and prescriptions. My phone is too potato to link it right now but I can find it after work and post it if needed. Just published last year I think.

We could ban and forcefully remove every “ assault weapon” from every single household in the country and mass shootings would still happen. That’s where the disconnect is. The ban would be ineffective and solely symbolic. Sounds like American Politics at its finest. Most of these shooters have suffered severe trauma as children. Why don’t we address that? Almost all of these shooters experience a follow up traumatic event leading up to their crimes? Why don’t we focus on that? And a large majority of these shooters have been and/or are currently on anti psychotic medication. Why don’t we focus on that? We do a really shitty job of taking care of each other in this country. And we are too obsessed with treating the result of a tragedy and not the causes. Wasn’t that here a mass knifing recently as well ? These people are sick and hurting, it our solution for that is to ban weapons . If this issue continues without attention we’re gonna need those weapons when these crazy sickos become actually more common. Not mention those weapons would be useful fighting tyrannical governments. It took like 12 armored swat guys with assault weapons to take down one of these recent shooters. How’s my butter knife or pistol gonna work on those guys ?

Yang has actually taken kind of a 180 stance on gun control since the shootings over the last couple of weeks. Hard to argue, but still don't like seeing that. I prefer being more anticipatory... hitting issues at the root / cause. Being reactionary and only swinging at the lobs isn't a great way to do policy, IMO.

I wouldn’t put that tactic beneath them. I also just don’t know how much it is happening or to what extent. Plus, depending on where you’re calling, it’s always going to be slanted in some candidates favor ( not purposefully). Yeah, I really think Tulsi's problem is just exposure and she may kind of have an energy problem. Don't get me wrong, these aren't complaints from me personally.. She's got me mostly won over. But from that typical voter out there... They don't really know her name. Other than the Kamala bitch slapping and to a less degree her pwning of... Swalwell in Debate 1 she's had no other big moments. Even on stage when she is dominating other candidates... She is very low energy (which I take as a positive, but I don't think other people do). She's so calm, cool, and collected. People in this election cycle want some zest. I think it's part of the reason Bernie is getting blue-balled by Lizzy. She has all the energy... I am not saying she will beat Trump, but she pretends like she is a lot more ready and prepared to take him on than Bernie does. That energy gets people pumped up. Bernie brought a lot more energy to the table in 2016 -- or maybe he didn't and it is just relative to a comparison with HRC whose only emotion was "im a dirty bitch" lol. Warren is outshining him on that front and I think it comes across as passionate and fiery, especially on the debate stage where pomp and acting skills are put to the highest test.
