How to put a kibosh on a team 101:

Quote

It is fair to wonder if the Apollos will simply cruise to the title, or if we will have a gigantic upset- because at this point, that's what it would be for anyone to beat Orlando.

So yeah. No more unbeatens, no more perfect teams, as an Arizona team fighting for their playoff lives took down the 5-0 Apollos. First our scores:

Salt Lake Stallions 22, Memphis Express 9

Arizona Hotshots 22, Orlando Apollos 17

San Antonio Commanders 37, Atlanta Legends 6

Birmingham Iron 32, San Diego Fleet 29

8. icEwKwOg4sVxtLi2MyZYiLstVPk (1-5, 15 PPG #7, 22.5 OPG #7) (-): The Express were soundly beaten by the Stallions in a matchup between two teams that always have trouble finishing games. At 1-5, the Express are almost certainly out of the playoff picture barring a miracle. Fortunately Johnny Manziel, fresh out of being kicked out of the CFL, is on his way to save the day!

7. gOxyqNitftxIHgfyFem3QX5LoyM(2-4, 12.2 PPG #8, 26.7 OPG #8) (-2): A week after I praised them for their back to back wins, the Legends got beaten like a red-headed step child. 37-6 gives the Legends the two most lopsided defeats this season, and they looked like their old selves. They could not stop the Commanders, nor could they score themselves. Just ugly all around. Now two games back of Birmingham for the 2 seed in the East, they're gonna need a lot of help for any chance at all.

6. uE1F3sZ8cmzRNNh6Z797kTEfs8A (2-4, 18.7 PPG #6, 20.2 OPG T#4) (+1): The Stallions beat up on the Express, finally finding another team that is also unable to play four quarters of good football all the way to the end. This is not a bad ballclub, they just seem to have issues finding the last bit to push them over the hump. They are definitely still alive in the West, just a game out of a playoff spot.

5. st-ek0dvnG2saVj9azT506U6uMk (3-3, 21.9 PPG #4, 20.5 OPG #6) (+1): Well done, Arizona. The Hotshots had their backs against the wall as dropping to 2-4 in the East would have left them in a tough spot. Instead they scored a huge upset on the road versus the previously 5-0 Apollos. And they held that offense to 17 points, and answered any scoring drive the Apollos made.

4. CznTrRbQeP_WmKoa7K94CUjcmaQ (3-3, 23.3 PPG #2, 20.2 OPG T#4) (-2): The Fleet lost a close one to the Iron at home, their first home loss all season, to fall to .500 and a game behind the Commanders in the West. San Diego really should have been able to pull this one out, but a defense that seemed unable to stop the Iron unless they got a turnover (which did help, to be fair), couldn't hold on at the end to give them a chance.

3. Xl112R0XequBQq2vYzQ8knORDtg (4-2, 20.5 PPG #5, 15.5 OPG #1) (+1): The Iron's defense gave up a lot of points tonight, partly due to a pair of costly turnovers by Luis Perez. Keith Price had better have been hurt, because coach Lewis nearly threw this one away if that is not the case. Perez is making some boneheaded throws now, maybe as a result of having pressure put on him to perform better. A win is a win, but this one is ugly, and if your ultimate goal is to pull an upset of the Apollos in the Eastern Finals, the Iron have to get better on all sides. Still, it is nice to snap a two-game losing streak and get in the W column again.

2. 6wovRbZvVdLl7sdgLA3KhQbM-Gg (4-2, 22.2 PPG #3, 19.3 OPG #3) (+1): The Commanders looked in complete... control against the Legends, shellacking them 37-6 in a game that was never in doubt. They have a one-game lead on everyone else in the West, and are on a 3-game winning streak. The Commander's defense hassled Murray all day long, and their offense took advantage of costly mistakes as well as putting together some nice drives of their own. They look to be the biggest threat to Orlando, already having played them close earlier this season.

1. AayMJwWop7gLon-LttOOyPpQ0Ck (5-1, 27.7 PPG #1, 16.5 OPG #2) (-): The Apollos remain at #1 despite the loss. They have put together too good and consistent of a season for one loss to drop them from the 1 spot, but San Antonio is right behind them. Orlando's Garret Gilbert turned the ball over twice uncharacteristically, the second time being an absolute backbreaker. The Apollos are still in command of the East, but the myth they are unbeatable has proven to be just that.

I think this was the easiest time I had doing the power rankings all season. First the scores:

Orlando Apollos 36, Atlanta Legends 6

San Antonio Commanders 19, Salt Lake Stallions 15

Arizona Hotshots 32, San Diego Fleet 15

Memphis Express 31, Birmingham Iron 25

8. gOxyqNitftxIHgfyFem3QX5LoyM (2-5, 11.3 PPG #8, 28 OPG, #8) (-1): The Legends are back bringing up the rear in the AAF after getting absolutely stomped two weeks in a row. Technically still alive for a playoff spot, the Legends just don't seem to have whatever they had during that two game win streak. They're not even competitive right now.

7. uE1F3sZ8cmzRNNh6Z797kTEfs8A (2-5, 18.1 PPG #6, 20 OPG #5) (-1): Another game where Salt Lake came this close but just couldn't finish. They even went so far as to score a TD with less than two minutes to go that put them within 2, but then had the ensuing two point conversion "pick-two'd" to go back down by 4. The Stallions simply cannot finish games.

6. icEwKwOg4sVxtLi2MyZYiLstVPk (2-5, 17.3 PPG #7, 22.9 OPG, #7) (+1): The Express only move up over the Stallions because of their hotshot new QB that came in and saved the day, including throwing a game-winning OT TD pass! That's right, Brandon Silvers is here, Memphis! You are saved! Wait did you think we were talking about someone else? Silvers- out of Troy, in an ironic twist, so Birmingham had the first shot at him- sliced and diced the Iron defense all day long and turned the ball over exactly zero times AND led a comeback in the late stages of the fourth when he was down 11. Sure, the Iron's piss poor clock management had something to do with it, but it was still an impressive performance.

5. CznTrRbQeP_WmKoa7K94CUjcmaQ (3-4, 22.1 PPG #3, 21.9 OPG #6) (-1): The Fleet got stomped by the Hotshots and their playoff hopes took a major blow as now both Arizona and San Antonio are ahead of them in the Western Conference. This is the first game in awhile where the Fleet weren't even competitive and they picked a horrible time to have what was probably their worst game of the season.

4. Xl112R0XequBQq2vYzQ8knORDtg (4-3, 21.1 PPG #5, 17.7 OPG #2) (-1): The Iron's once vaunted defense has steadily fallen off in recent weeks, allowing 31 points to the Express along with zero takeaways. Luis Perez is slinging it better, but he is still making some boneheaded throws and a completion percentage of only 43%- only a small part of that due to drops- just isn't going to cut it any longer. Sure the Iron will probably limp into a playoff spot even with Perez, but if they want any chance at beating Orlando in the Eastern Finals, Tim Lewis needs to start Price.

3. st-ek0dvnG2saVj9azT506U6uMk (4-3, 23.3 PPG #2, 19.7 OPG #4) (+2): Arizona's thorough beatdown of the Fleet gives the impression that the West is down to two teams. They have looked very impressive in the past two weeks, after floundering to a 2-3 record including a loss to the Legends in there, they have now upset the unbeaten Apollos and put a whipping on a division foe. This team looks like they have found something and they could be a serious threat if they continue to improve.

2. 6wovRbZvVdLl7sdgLA3KhQbM-Gg (5-2, 21.7 PPG #4, 18.7 OPG #3) (-): The Commanders took care of the Stallions, but it was very close. A defense that had been staunch all day allowed what was possibly the game tying TD drive, but stood up huge with the pick-two to seal the victory. They are set up nicely for homefield in the Western Finals, but even a single slip-up could let Arizona back into the mix for the 1 seed.

1. AayMJwWop7gLon-LttOOyPpQ0Ck  (6-1, 28.9 PPG #1, 15 OPG #1) (-): The Apollos now boast both the best overall scoring offense AND defense- and its not all that close on either front. Nearly a TD ahead on offense and nearly a FG ahead on defense. After yet another outing holding the opponent to under 10 points, the Apollos look like a well-oiled machine, the only blip on the radar being the loss to the Hotshots.

Jeesus didn't that one guy put $250mil in? That already gone?

That kinda saps my will to do this, but dang it, we're gonna have week 8- and possibly final- power rankings.

First, the scores:

Orlando Apollos 34, Memphis Express 31

Salt Lake Stallions 8, San Diego Fleet 3

Birmingham Iron 17, Atlanta Legends 9

Arizona Hotshots 23, San Antonio Commanders 6

8. gOxyqNitftxIHgfyFem3QX5LoyM (2-6, 11 PPG #8, 26.6 OPG #8) (-): The Legends still bring up the rear after yet another defeat where they couldn't get into the endzone or into double digits. The Legends are in last place in PPG by a staggering 47 points with 88 total points scored. That simply will not cut it.

7. CznTrRbQeP_WmKoa7K94CUjcmaQ (3-5, 19.8 PPG T#4, 20.1 OPG #6) (-2): The Fleet have just looked completely uninspired the past three weeks and with their playoff hopes on life support, they need to pull something together fast.

6. uE1F3sZ8cmzRNNh6Z797kTEfs8A (3-5, 16.9 PPG #7, 17.9 OPG #3) (+1): Color me less impressed with the Stallions win than with the Express's loss, thus the rankings here. The Stallions won an ugly affair 8-3 over the Fleet, but they just simply haven't had the firepower on offense all year to hold up to their defense which has played fairly well down the stretch.

5. icEwKwOg4sVxtLi2MyZYiLstVPk (2-6, 19 PPG #6, 24.2 OPG #7) (+1): Memphis is officially out of the postseason with the Legends loss to the Iron, but I think if they had started Silvers the whole time they would absolutely be in this thing still. They have played Orlando tough both times, but the defense is a pretty weak spot at the moment.

4. Xl112R0XequBQq2vYzQ8knORDtg (5-3, 20.6 PPG #3, 16.6 OPG #1) (-): The defense had a dominating performance and the special teams helped out a lot setting up one of the Iron's TDs on the day. Fun AAF factoid: The Iron have almost as many goal-line stands (5) as they do passing TDs (6) on the year.

3. 6wovRbZvVdLl7sdgLA3KhQbM-Gg (5-3, 19.8 PPG T#4, 19.2 OPG #5) (-1): The Commanders got destroyed by the Hotshots in every phase of the game, so instead of clinching the 1-seed in the West, they instead are now tied with Arizona with two games to play.

2. st-ek0dvnG2saVj9azT506U6uMk (5-3, 23.2 PPG #2, 18 OPG #4) (+1): Three weeks ago, the Hotshots were 2-3 and staring down a 2-4 record as they had to play host to the undefeated Apollos. Since then, they have gone 3-0 and are back in a tie with the Commanders for the top spot in the West, taking down the 1st and 2nd strongest teams in the AAF along the way. No mean feat for a team that was almost out of the postseason race three Sundays back.

1. AayMJwWop7gLon-LttOOyPpQ0Ck (7-1, 29.5 PPG #1, 17 OPG #2) (-): The Apollos let that one get a lot closer than they probably should have. They are still winning games, and they are still the favorite to win this whole thing- should we even make it the final round, given the league's financial troubles- but they do not look anywhere close to unbeatable as they did prior to the Arizona game.

Some article I read, which could totally be made up.. Says that guy (who put in the 250M) is making a power play here to attempt to steal the AAF game tracking technology.

Its the only explanation that makes sense. There's no way someone could be that dumb to believe that much in a league to pay that kind of money and then just give up completely after a few weeks.
