Play GM

Recommended Posts

Not sure if other will find this fun, but figured I would give it a try. Feel free to post your own scenario or reply to one as the GM of the team.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Scenario: 1st round QB is going into his 5th year of the rookie deal. He started out hot and regressed statistically every year since. However, he has come up big in the post-season and was your starting QB for two super-bowl winning campaigns, even though he didn't win MVP for either. You also have a 2nd round pass rusher holding out before his 4th year of his rookie  deal and has made 2 pro bowls.

Year 1: 335-489/68.5%/4,365/29tds/8ints/13fums/ROY

Year 2: 302-515/58.6%/3,878/22tds/15ints/8fums

Year 3: 225-433/51.9%/3,512/23tds/13ints/10fums/SB Win

Year 4: 262-441/55.6%/3,703/27tds/15ints/9fums/SB Win

I think the only two options are to either re-sign him for cheap, which probably isn't viable since a 2x SB champ isn't going to re-sign for cheap, or you franchise him at the end of season and try to trade him. Those are some fairly meh numbers, and if he's able to put up those numbers and still win in the postseason then the team obviously has good pieces around him, whether it be a good defense, good run game, or both.  Can't just let him walk because the return would be minimal, and if you don't have a viable back-up behind him you're more than likely gonna need some ammo for the draft.

The pass rusher should probably get paid. Early holdouts shouldn't be rewarded, and two Pro Bowl noms is sorta vague, but even with that said, you should probably pay him.

I would try to sign the QB and one of the pass rushers. It's so much harder to draft and develop QB's. I feel like in any given draft there's more pass rushing talent than QB talent. Sometimes you can even find value in free agency and replace defensive prices with multiple players.

Those last two seasons are so bad that you can sell to your fans that hes a bum despite the Super Bowls. If a team with that QB is that good, you must have a great defense. Try to get it done with the pass rusher. Get a QB in free agency or the draft. If the QB is tall and white, trade him to Denver for a a first.

Scenario: Owner demands you extend your former 1st round pick receiver before his 4th season and make him the highest paid receiver in the league and avoid a hold out. With very little cap room your most likely candidates for a contract restructure are first, your HOF-bound QB who has been with your team since you drafted him. He is on the last year of his contract and said he will retire after the season but his back-loaded contract has a gigantic cap hit in his final year. Second, your all-pro CB who you signed to a large 4-year deal last off-season, and he tore his ACL and broke his foot the first week of the season. The QB refuses to restructure his contract in anyway. The CB will rework a deal to lessen the cap hit but wants an additional $17M in guaranteed money. 2nd on your depth chart at QB is a former 3rd round pick going into his sophomore year and has not had an NFL snap.

This one is pretty easy. A WR averaging nearly 1,700yds and 11 TDs a season with 17.3 ypc? Make him the highest paid receiver. Do your HoF QB right and let him stay that last season then ride off into the sunset. Although I would try discussing with him that we could restructure his contract to move some money into next year as a re-structure bonus, which he can collect upon retiring. If still not interested, then talk with the corner and try to lower that additional guaranteed money a bit. Would also try getting most of that additional guaranteed money onto next season since you would have a huge contract coming off the books to offset it. The injury is a bit of a concern but at least it was week 1 so he has plenty of time to recover.

LOVE the restructure bonus angle

That's an elite wr and my job isn't that I build a winning team, it's to keep my boss happy. And you can't cut the QB to replace him with a nobody unless he's 2015 Peyton Manning level washed. It hurts to have to give more guarantees to an injured cb but that's the move you have to make. Unless the QB is washed in which case you tell him he can retire or he's cut, clearing room without giving the cb more. Though if the QB is a tall white guy I'm gonna give the Denver Broncos a call as well.

Damn it Blots, Denver isn't just some dumping ground for white QB's who can throw 70 yards on their ass

Yeah Peyton couldn't throw nearly that far at the end. I just said tall and white.

Scenario:

After a shouting match in practice during week 2, you find out that there are serious rumors that your starting CB slept with your starting pass rusher's wife. During a week 6 practice, a fight breaks out between the two. The fight was pretty bad, the CB sustained some bruised ribs and will probably miss a week. Later that night, the CB goes to social media publicly blast the pass rusher, bragging about being with his wife, and provides pictures of them in his room.

The pass rusher's agent calls you and lets you know he isn't playing on the team with him, and one of them has to go. The pass rusher is playing his 5th year option on his rookie deal and your team was set to give him a long-term contract. The CB is in the third year of his rookie deal and made the pro bowl last season. A team reaches out to you with an offer for the CB. You find out that CB's agent also represents a player on that team so it is likely they know the situation.

CB:

Y1 (18pdf/2ints/64tkls)

Y2 (11pdf/9ints/44tkls/pro bowl)

Y3(8pdf/4ints/17tkls)

PR:

Y1(52tkls/6sks/11pdf/3ff) Y2 (68tkls/13sks/17pdf/6ff/2saf/all pro)

Y3(70tkls/4sks/14pdf) Y4(58tlks/7.5sks/1ff/11pdf)

Y5(22tlks/1sk/3pdfs)

Trade offer:

2019 2nd round pick - 2020 4th round pick

for

CB - 2019 3rd round pick

Scenario: Pat Mahomes finished his 4th season and has told you that he is willing to play on his 5th year option and even franchise tags...but when you present him a long term deal he wants it to be a 4-year contract with the first two years fully guaranteed and the last two years are a player option.

Y1: 1G - 35ATT - 22COMP - 62.9% - 284YDS - 0TD - 1INT - 2SKS

Y2: 16G -580ATT - 383COMP - 66% - 5,097YDS - 50TD - 12INT - 26SKS

Y3: 16G 545ATT - 395COMP - 72.3% - 5,011YDS - 39TD - 10INT - 20SKS

Start negotiations, make him the highest paid player in history if you have to, but secure him as long term as humanly possible.

Otherwise trade him to Denver for peanuts, that seems like a good plan.

LoL but he has told you the longest you will secure him is 2 years. Then he wants it to be up to him.

then the clear solution is to let him play out his 5th year, franchise tag him for the 6th, and then see if he still wants to do a 2+2 deal.

So curious if you give him that deal if he still wants it and has played without distraction?

Ideally you try and bring him on longer term, but if he still wants a 2+2 after the 6th season, then you've effectively kept him on an extra two years. And it's important to note that having a Mahomes is far better than the alternative.

Your 29 year old all-pro franchise QB  Saddrew Suck has just retired out of the blue during the 3rd preseason game. With said QB, you legitimately thought you might have a shot at a Super Bowl run. You have very little depth behind him, the guy who is now your presumptive starter has looked average at best during his relief of your franchise QB.

A) Do you go after your ex-QB for the money you might be able to get back from him?

B) Do you assume with a loaded roster you might still be able to make a run and so you just buckle down with your previous backup QB, Bacoby Jissett?

C) Do you trade away a high draft pick to try to lure someone else in?

D) Do you sign a dude who's been on the sideline for two years and looked like shit the last time he played, but has been on a SB run before, the infamous Kolin Caepernick? (... That didn't work).

E) Do you curl up in a ball and cry about how its unfair you didn't get two superstar QBs for 15+ years each and realize you have now had two generational talents at the most important position in football and only come away with a single Lombardi?

No.

Yes.

No.

No.

Yes -- but only on Tuesdays and Friday nights after your wife leaves for a weekend of bingo with her mother.

This season is Brissett's. See what he can do over a full year. Prepare like no tomorrow on QBs in the draft class. Think about trying to lure a Tom Brady, Drew Brees, or potentially Rivers away from their teams for a short run while you draft + develop a QB. None of those guys may move, but explore it as much as possible.

First you fetal position for a bit, cuz a week three preseason retirement of your franchise QB is not a great situation.  Once you're done crying you get up, dry your eyes, and go to work.  You roll Jackson Baconbits out there at QB and if he fails, which is probably the most likely outcome, then you draft Tua or Justin Herbert in the draft next season and make everyone sad 'n' mad again about the QB you just drafted.
