What Game Are You Currently Playing?

Wow, that video is a real eye opener. I knew the computer cheated on All-Madden but I never would have known the AI was that blatantly fake.

That's why I straight run the ball all game on AM.

I suck at running the ball.... lol. The Oline is so stupid, it's actually hard to fathom any person is that fucking retarded. Defenders shoot through the line almost directly after the snap. OLineman barely get their hands up, and if you try breaking to one side or the other... The DLineman sheds the block almost instantaneously. You have to be pretty good with the two sticks to be an effective runner, and effective with the sticks I am not.

I find it easier to run up the gut, than to run sweeps. Even screens have worked better for me, than sweeps and tosses.

Haha! reminds me of that letter to Madden from that red headed lineman.

Yeah, pitches to the outside and counters are useless on all madden. You have to stick to running up the gut. I can usually find the lanes well enough. However, many times I rely on the back shedding the first tackle since the DT or DE like JD said will easily shed the blocks and penetrate.

Forza Motorsports 3, still.

Challenged to paint a better pink car. Picked a California and sponsoring it with Roxy logos.

"Any given Sunday" isn't just the title of a bad football movie; it's an old adage that you never know what you're going to get when players step out on the field. Anything can happen. Your star QB could sling it five yards past every receiver. Your shaky rookie cornerback might come up clutch with a game-changing interception. Over the course of weeks and seasons, players are defined by their tendencies and begin assuming roles in their teams.

Madden NFL 12 developer Tiburon recognizes this and has made it part of the core upgrade to Franchise mode. It's true, Madden has disappointed with its Franchise mode the past few years, but that looks to be changing this year. The amount of improvements is staggering, but the most significant are the additions of dynamic player performance and player roles.

Dynamic Player Performance

Players rarely maintain the same level of performance throughout a season. There are good days and bad. In Madden NFL 12's Franchise mode, consistency and confidence are major factors in how a player's performance varies throughout a season.

Michael Vick can be thrilling to watch one week and agonizing to watch the next. His inconsistency can swing his Madden rating by some 20 points, which sounds crazy, but isn't too far-fetched. Peyton Manning, by contrast, remains the most consistent QB in the NFL. When Peyton steps onto the field, you can be fairly certain of the quality of his performance.

Rookies tend to be less consistent, capable of jaw-dropping plays followed by boneheaded ones week in and week out. And as players learn and mature (if they mature), they gain consistency. It matters this year if a player is a rookie – not just because they may have a lower overall rating, but because that rating can fluctuate greatly. Letting a rookie sit and learn is actually a viable strategy in Franchise mode.

The other weekly factor in dynamic player performance is confidence. This comes down to hot and cold streaks. If Antonio Cromartie remembers all his children's names and gets a pair of picks against the Giants, he's going to be riding high into the next week. So much of the game is said to be mental and so a player's mindset factors into their stats on Sunday. Streaks only last a maximum of three weeks before resetting, preventing a player from having an inflated rating the entire season.

Player Roles

Tom Brady is a playoff performer. He's good in the regular season, but something kicks in during the playoffs that boost his ability to win games. Mark Brunell has become a mentor. His role is to support the development of Jets QB Mark Sanchez. Having Brunell as mentor has Sanchez learning and improving at a faster rate. Adrian Peterson is fumble prone. It's in his head now. In big moments, he's more likely to cough up the rock. Sadly, that's his role right now on the Vikings. (EA hasn't revealed if Peterson has the Fumble Prone role; if not, we should riot.)

Roles aren't given, they're earned. In each offseason, every player is analyzed to see if they meet specific criteria for a role. If so, they enter the next season tagged as such. These roles can have a big influence in games. After all, clutch performers can do things they just couldn't ever hope to do the first 55 minutes of a game. A switch turns on and they make good things happen. Some roles can have a positive effect on a player or team and others, like the unfortunate "fumble prone" role, can be negatives that follow a player until they find a way to shake the tag.

madden-nfl-12-20110513114259742-000.jpg

But roles go beyond game-day performance. The general manager for each computer-controlled team factors roles into his decision on free agents and draft picks. After all, if you have a "quarterback of the future" on the team, there's no reason to draft a QB in the first round. If a team is built on pounding the ball up the middle, they're going to try and sign a running back in free agency who fits the role.

And, of course, roles are going to change the way you build your own franchise. Roles aren't defined at the draft but on the field. So you won't know who is a showboater versus a work horse, but the difference could impact your ability to win games in the long run. And who knows, maybe over time a player will settle down, gain a veteran's mentality, and get serious about winning a championship. When trading or signing free agents, you're going to have to give extra weight to a player's role. All things being equal, I'm taking the playoff performer – heck, he's worth an extra million a year if he can help get us to the Super Bowl.

Here are some of the 20+ roles in Madden NFL 12:

  • Team Mentor
  • Team Leader
  • Injury Prone
  • Run Stopper
  • Franchise Quarterback
  • Defensive Playmaker
  • Offensive Playmaker
  • Playoff Performer
  • Shutdown Corner
  • Pass Rusher
  • Trench Warrior
  • Fumble Prone
  • Underachiever
  • Project Player
  • 1st Round Pick
  • Future Star
  • Iron Man
  • QB of the Future
  • Feature Back

Tie consistency and confidence with the new player roles system and you have a Franchise mode that tests your GM and coaching abilities. Madden's Franchise mode last year was merely a bunch of seasons strung together. This year, players evolve over the course of a football dynasty. It's no longer just about the rating you see at the start of the season. Now, it's about the impact a player can have on your team and his level of consistency every given Sunday.

That's just part of the big changes coming to Madden NFL 12's Franchise mode. Check back Monday for more details on what's been added this year.

Mass Effect 3 Spoilers:

Your Mass Effect 3 squad will be smaller than your ME2 squad, which had 12 recruits. "We're focused on a smaller squad with deeper relationships and more interesting interplay in Mass Effect 3," Mass Effect overlord Casey Hudson explained.

I hope they don't cut Mordin, but I get the feeling they will.

Confirmed as Mass Effect 3 recruits are Garrus, Liara, Kaidan, Ashley and Tali (depending on if they're alive). Wrex sounds to be in the balance. Each character's equipment will be updated.

There are apparently no new romance options in Mass Effect 3. BioWare revealed that 70 per cent of Mass Effect 2 gamers weren't loyal to their Mass Effect 1 love interest. And this will have repercussions in Mass Effect 3.

Well when two-thirds of your choices are a racist and a guy with no personality, that's not really surprising.

Shepard has become an enemy of Cerberus because Shepard joined the Alliance. Why did Shepard do that? Because Cerberus is working with the Reapers. Why? We don't yet know.

Well, looks like destroying the Reaper base was the right call.

Throughout Mass Effect 3, Shepard will venture to the homeworlds the Asari, Turians, Salarians and Quarians. And, of course, Shepard will explore Earth, including a Seattle-Vancouver mega-city before and after a Reaper attack. Shepard will also explore Mars.

Shepard can pilot a 50-foot Cerberus Atlas mech. And he'll need firepower like this when fighting a 600-foot Reaper on one of the massive levels.

Giant robots in my western RPG? It's more likely than you think.

Rumors on teh internetz has it that Garrus dies a heroic death in ME3.

And WTF.....I have consequences for banging the shit out of Ashley AND Miranda? Fuck you, BioWare. Shepard is playa. Deal with it.

Just finished Xenogears.

Can definitely see why people hold this game in such high regard. I'm sure it would've been incredibly epic to play this back in 98 when it came out.

Madden NFL 12 is looking to be the most robust offering the series has had this generation. Major improvements to the presentation, Superstar mode, Franchise mode, and online are expected this year. Here's what you need to know about the big changes.

What is Madden NFL 12's Release Date?

Madden NFL 12 arrives in stores later than usual -- August 30. Let's hope it's lead-in to the start of the NFL season.

What's new this year?

There's quite a lot, actually. Five Madden NFL 12 additions you'll notice right off the bat: Authentic presentation (both in pre-game and during the game), the addition of custom playbooks, improvements to Gameflow (AI-controlled play-calling), collision technology for better tackling, and improved defensive AI.

What's the biggest gameplay change?

That's something EA has not revealed yet. We're hoping that's the focus of Madden NFL 12 at E3 2011.

What's new in Superstar mode?

The two biggest changes -- you now earn skill points which you can spend however you like to upgrade your player and practices have actual value in improving your superstar.

What's new in Franchise mode?

A whole lot. No, really -- Tiburon claims 90% of all Madden players try out Franchise mode. The team finally invested some time into greatly improving things. Here's a cheat sheet:

  • Dynamic Player Performance: Player ratings fluctuate based on consistency and confidence.
  • Player Roles: More than 20 roles (Playoff Performer, Trench Warrior) affect player and team stats throughout the season.
  • The Pre-Season Matters: Start with 75-player roster and need to make cuts each week. Playing pre-season games reveals player ratings.
  • Scouting Reworked: Tiered scouting system reveals ratings tied to different events (college season, combine, pro day, individual workout).
  • Draft Class Improvements: Robust set of draftees built for 30 seasons of franchise. Teams draft based on their real tendencies.
  • Free Agent Bidding Wars: eBay style bidding against other GMs creates intense, rapid-fire free agent period that takes only a few minutes to complete.
  • Smarter General Managers: Better re-sign and cut logic. GMs make trades and sign free agents who fit their needs, with player roles factored in.
  • Coaches Matter: Coaches have small positive and negative impact on how players perform on the field based on their style.
  • Edit Any Player: Alter the ratings of any player -- rookie, created player, or established veteran.
  • Change Teams: In any offseason, change control of which teams you run in Franchise mode.
  • Numerous Tweaks: Many other small tuning and additions are coming, including retirement logic, a more accurate salary system, fixes to the injured reserve system, better simulation stats, and more.

How has Madden online changed?

EA hasn't revealed this yet, but we're told a big addition is in the works.

Is this for real?

The additions listed are for real. What we don't know is how well they'll play. Until we invest 10 hours into Franchise mode, there's no telling if all the new features work well together. But it sounds very, very promising.

Madden has done some good things with gameplay in the past couple of years, but has done a very poor job with adding and improving its features. Looks that that's changing with Madden NFL 12.

Did you end up getting Brink?

Yea...it has potential, but needs some patches to make it a better and more playable experience. I am sure it will get some patches to fix/make better....if not it'll be a shame so I am just waiting. lol

BTW I got it on the 360 lol :p

Wow, from what Vin posted looks like Franchise mode is gonna be pretty damn good. I love the dynamic player updates and preseason changes. An improvement to the AI GMs sounds good too.

So along with the changes to the Superstar mode and tweaks to gameplay and presentation, I can honestly say I'm looking forward to Madden again.
