Cowboys cornerback Bryan McCann arrested

The lockout hasn’t kept NFL players from running afoul of the law, with Cowboys cornerback Bryan McCann the latest to show up on a police blotter.

WFAA-TV in Dallas was the first to report that the Cowboys cornerback was arrested early Saturday morning. He was charged with public intoxication, taken to the city detox center at 3:00 a.m. and released eight hours later. The television station had no details about what behavior led to the arrest. Neither McCann nor his agents responded to a request for comment from ESPNDallas.com on the incident.

The NFL plans to deal with McCann, and other players arrested during the lockout, under the Personal Conduct Policy once the league resumes normal operations. It remains to be seen if they’ll be successful in punishing players for what they do while away from work during a time that they are prevented from working.

McCann joined the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of SMU before the 2010 season. He was mostly a backup, but made two standout plays during his rookie season. He returned an interception 101 yards for a touchdown in a win against the Giants and took a punt back 97 yards against the Lions the next week. He was named NFC defensive player of the week and NFC special-teams player of the week for his efforts.

It definitely could be. McCann came straight out and said he was not intoxicated nor an endangerment to the public. It would be stupid of him to lie about it so something is definitely awry here.

Wow. So a work stoppage occurs, and the players break the law. Wonderful times.

Players were breaking the law before the lockout.

I'm curious about how the NFL is going to discipline them when they're locked out.

Good point. Knowing Goodell, when this thing gets resolved - give him a couple weeks/months and then he'll slap on the fines and suspensions.

Adam Schefter reported that players would not be subject to retro-active punishment during this period. Which means guys have a free pass as of right now.

I see that a bit doubtful. They still have local and state laws to abide by. The "chaos" should stay around the usual amount, but who knows.. fines are chump change to many players.

I wouldn't doubt it at all. You never know.

If McCann is telling the truth a similar thing happened to Mike Williams during the season. He blew under the legal limit and THEN they suspected he was under the influence of something else so they asked him to do a urinalysis and he said he had nothing to hide so he did it. When they got the results back it showed he was completely clean. Charges were dropped, but the damage was already done via media.

Dallas Cowboys cornerback Bryan McCann has hired Arlington-based attorney Brody Shanklin to represent him after he was arrested for public intoxication last weekend, according to a statement released Wednesday by the player's agent John Biggins.

McCann, 23, was taken into custody at 2:30 a.m. last Saturday around the 1400 block of Main Street near a downtown nightclub. He was sent to the city detoxification center but was released later that morning at 11:36.

New details of the incident involving McCann were made public Wednesday.

According to a written police report, one of McCann's companions was involved in a disturbance at a nearby club and was arrested for public intoxication. Police said McCann then asked the officers to release the companion's belongings. When the officers told him they couldn't, McCann became "belligerent," according to the report, which also said that the police on the scene observed McCann had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and breath smelling of an alcoholic beverage.

In an accompanying statement, the Dallas Police Department said, "A review of the arrest report indicates that the officer completing the report inadvertently failed to check the boxes on the report that indicate that Mr. McCann was a danger to self or others. This was an oversight on the officer's part and will be dealt with in the adjudication process."

According to the Texas Penal Code, a person can be arrested for public intoxication "if the person appears in a public place while intoxicated to the degree that the person may endanger the person or another."

On Sunday, McCann released a statement through Biggins and denied he was drunk.

"I have never been arrested before and take pride in conducting myself at all times in a responsible and respectful manner off the football field," he said. "I was not intoxicated and did not pose a danger to myself or others. I am very grateful that, due to the Constitution and Americans' strong and enduring belief in due process, I am presumed innocent of this public intoxication charge because I am innocent. I look forward to vigorously defending myself in a court of law. "

McCann, who played at SMU , was an undrafted rookie last season. He went through training camp before being cut by the Cowboys in September. After a brief stint with the Baltimore Ravens, McCann rejoined the Cowboys later that month. McCann was then promoted to the team's active roster on Nov. 4 and was soon deployed as a reserve cornerback and return specialist.

Despite making only 15 tackles in nine games, he made a discernible impact. He scored on a 101-yard interception return against the New York Giants on Nov. 14. A week later, he produced another touchdown, when he fielded a punt and ran it back 97 yards against the Detroit Lions. In total, McCann handled 31 kicks and punts while playing 146 defensive snaps, according to Pro Football Focus.
