Eagles first in line to sign Plaxico Burress?

Recommended Posts

Gary Myers of the New York Daily News has heard that the Eagles will eventually be first in line to sign former Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress, but there's also speculation the Steelers, Chargers, Falcons and Ravens could also be interested. At the Super Bowl this year, Steelers WR Hines Ward endorsed the return of Burress to Pittsburgh, where he spent the first five years of his career before signing with the Giants. Ward is a terrific player, but he does not make the Steelers' personnel decisions. Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and coach Andy Reid, having already been through the post-prison experience with Vick, might be in a better position to handle any public backlash about adding another former inmate. They could also help Burress with his transition back to the NFL.

Interesting. Doubt he will ever be his old self, but if they can get some decent production out of him, they will have one hell of a receiving corps with him, Jackson, Maclin, Avant, and Celek.

The Eagles need a big WR to help out in the end zone. I just don't see how much Plax could contribute this year. I'd be against that signing.

I read the title and thought, "I dunno, we're pretty set at receiver," but seanijuana makes a good point about our red zone woes. I don't know, though, we'll just see what happens on this one.

I'm totally buying into the notion that we acqiure Plaxico for several reasons. I think the Egles impressed NFL nation by giving Michael Vick another opportunity to demonstrate that he paid his dues to society and moved on with his NFL career. Acquiring Plaxico can only improve upon that reputation to give players another shot (no pun intended).

Lock the deal!

Yeah I kinda agree. I'd be wary of signing him. But if you can get him for cheap it could be a risk worth taking.

Vick approves of this.

Michael Vick knows all about second chances and he'd be thrilled if the

Philadelphia Eagles gave one to Plaxico Burress. The New York Daily News

reported Saturday that the Eagles are interested in Burress, who's scheduled to

be released from prison June 6 after serving 20 months on weapons charges. If

the team can sign the wide receiver, Vick said, it "absolutely" would be a good

move. "I think with the guys we have now, I think we can fit him in and we can

make it work," Vick said Monday on WIP-AM. "Obviously the ultimate goal at the

end of the day is to put that ring on your finger at the end of the year. "I

think certainly Plaxico is going to come out with a chip on his shoulder the

same way I did, and he'll go out and help this football team to whatever

capacity he can," added Vick, who's from the same area of Virginia as Burress

and knows his family and friends. "I think the guys would embrace him and bring

him in. If that happens, who knows? We talking about 'what ifs' now? It would

certainly be a good thing." Vick served 19 months in a federal prison after

pleading guilty to dogfighting, signed with the Eagles in 2009, then resurrected

his NFL career. He received NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2010 after

taking over Philadelphia's quarterback job and posting career highs in passer

rating (100.2), passing yards (3,018) and touchdown passes

(21).

I don't see it. Plax is at best a red zone specialist. He's not even good enough to be our 4th receiver because our coaches love Riley Cooper. So why would Plax sign with us when someone else is bound to give him a deal to at least play slot?

It depends on what kind of job he'd be ready for. He's going to be a 3rd or 4th receiver for us depending on what kind of speed he has. Based on that, I doubt he goes to the Eagles. But if he's cool with taking that role, I don't have any problem signing him. The good thing about it is that he's just depth, so if anything comes up, or he is not the same guy he used to be, we aren't counting on him to be a starter or anything.

The thing is though, if the coin flips on the other side and Plaxico is unhappy being at best a slot receiver (which IMO wouldn't work out too well for him), he could prove to be a distraction. I mean this guy was a #1 WR and caught the game-winning TD pass in the Super Bowl, he may have a bit of an ego coming back. It's all on how he would handle it obviously, but that's why it's a bit of a bigger risk than just "if he works out great, if not no big loss".

I'm just saying depending on the contract he gets, which shouldn't be anywhere near what he was getting paid as a Giant, he would be very cuttable if he does become a distraction. I don't really want him, but if he's willing to eat some humble pie and be a support player at least until his feet are under him again, sure why not?

FoxSports.com's Adam Caplan believes the Eagles are indeed interested in free agent Plaxico Burress, as reported by the New York Daily News a week ago.

Personnel sources tell Caplan that coach Andy Reid has always been impressed by Burress' ability to "beat coverage with his size." In eight Giants games against the Eagles, Plax has racked up 650 yards and seven TDs -- five coming in the red zone, where Reid's teams have struggled of late. Plax will have to prove in public workouts that he still has some semblance of that elite ability as he enters his mid-30s. Related: Eagles Source: FoxSports.com

Update

Brandon Jacobs, Plaxico Burress' best friend on the Giants, says the free agent believes he will end up signing with the Eagles.

Jacobs agrees that Burress will likely end up in Philadelphia, looking for a "new start" like the one Michael Vick received. Plax has already spoken with Vick, setting the Eagles as the prohibitive favorites to sign the 33-year-old. Adding the red-zone threat would be yet another reason to draft Vick in the first round this year. Jacobs emphasized that there is "no chance" Plax will re-sign with the Giants. "No chance," Jacobs reiterated. "None." Related: Michael Vick, Eagles Source: Ralph Vacchiano on Twitter

Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports the Eagles are "absolutely interested in pursuing" free agent Plaxico Burress.

Burress has spoken with Michael Vick, and it sounds like the two already have a tentative plan in place. "Plax is a Virginia guy, Vick is a Virginia guy," said Brandon Jacobs, Burress' best friend on the Giants. "They sort of went through the same things ... It wouldn't be a bad thing, he thinks, to go down there if you want to win. He wants to go down there, he wants to have a chance to win the Super Bowl right away." Related: Eagles Source: New York Daily News

If free agent Plaxico Burress fails to come to agreement with the Eagles, he could end up turning his attention to the Rams.

"I've heard him say that, too, yeah," said friend and former teammate Brandon Jacobs. "He said he wouldn't mind going out there to play for (coach Steve Spagnuolo)." Sam Bradford could use a physical red-zone threat, but the Rams are already up against the roster limit at wide receiver -- especially if Mark Clayton is re-signed. Jacobs also revealed that the Dolphins and Colts were interested "at one time." We find it hard to believe the Colts ever gave Plax serious consideration. I think if Plax gets out of jail and similarly to Vick if nobody wants him the Eagles will gladly swoop in and give him a vet minimum salary. As much as our coaches love Riley Cooper I think everyone knows that the talent Plax can bring to the table would push him ahead of Cooper and maybe even Avant,, but just because Plax is the 3rd or 4th WR doesn't mean he has to play the slot. Maclin and Jackson could both play there when Plax is on the field.

Having said all that though, that's the best case scenario. The guy could just come out of jail old, slow and essentially useless but with the talent he has he's worth a flier.

Jackson in the slot going deep vs a linebacker... Vick just creamed his pants. I was about to say Jackson has no place in the slot, and he probably shouldn't be there more than 5 times a game, but when he does get those mismatches and draws the safety that he normally draws every time he's on the field... oh man. The outsides are going to be wide open if DJax isn't.

Jackson can also be taken off the field for some red zone plays and replaced with Burress, who would be a red zone starter.

These are the advantages of having Plax. He also gives Kafka a giant target to throw to when Vick gets nicked up, much like he was a security blanket for Eli when he was young.

The Rams are probably a better fit for Plax if he wants to be a star again... but if he wants to contribute to a SB, no matter what our defense looks like... I don't see a lot of teams outscoring us if he's on the field with Avant, Jackson, Maclin, and McCoy.

Honestly I think Plax needs to go somewhere for a year or two so he can get his legs back under him because realistically how many teams could he even start for after this long away from the game? The Bears would be a pretty good fit though imo with Hester and Knox's speed. We've also seen that Cutler likes the big target WR's.

Per Rotoworld.com:

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer's Jeff McLane, reports of the Eagles' interest in free agent Plaxico Burress are "coming from Plax's people."

"More I think about this Plaxico to Eagles thing the more I'm convinced it is unlikely," McLane added on Twitter. McLane's theory is that Burress' agent is spreading the rumors in order to generate interest in his client. It wouldn't be the first time that happened. McLane's colleague, Jonathan Tamari, agrees with the idea and notes that Burress' addition would knock promising youngster Riley Cooper down the depth chart. Jun 3, 1:17 PM

The Philadelphia Jailbirds. Put some prison bars around that eagle logo. I think Rae Curruth and Lawrence Phillips are looking for a new team, too.

Per Rotoworld.com:

Citing "sources around the team," Pro Football Weekly suggests the Eagles' interest in free agent Plaxico Burress is "perhaps only lukewarm."

This jibes with beat writer Jeff McLane's suspicion that the Eagles speculation is all being driven by Burress' camp. McLane has not addressed the report from reliable New York Daily News scribe Ralph Vacchiano that the Eagles are "absolutely interested" in Plax. It's easy to see contract and playing time as a factor, but we're not buying Plaxico's blocking of fourth receiver Riley Cooper as a reason for the Eagles to back off. Jun 4, 11:50 PM

And:

After speaking with front office people from five different receiver-needy teams, the National Football Post couldn't find a club interested in free agent Plaxico Burress.

"I’m very leery. Too many things could go wrong as opposed to going right," were the words of one personnel director. Another added, "not by any stretch can he be counted on as a go-to receiver anymore." The market for Burress has been dramatically overhyped, but he should still ultimately be able to find a taker. Locked up for 20 months for illegally carrying and firing a gun at a Manhattan nightclub, Plaxico Burress is ready to walk out of prison and face another grim reality, a lockout that could jeopardize the resumption of his football career. The former New York Giants receiver who caught the game-winning pass in the 2008 Super Bowl is set to leave the Oneida Correctional Facility in upstate New York on Monday. Burress, who turns 34 in August, plans to return to his Florida home to spend time with his wife, son and a daughter born while he was in jail. Unlike Michael Vick, released in 2009 from a federal term for dogfighting, Burress doesn't have a league waiting to bid on his services. But "he will play in the NFL this year," Drew Rosenhaus, Burress' agent, said in an email to The Associated Press. "Many teams want him. He will be a top free agent. He is healthy and ready to go. He will be signed shortly after the lockout ends." Burress' release caps a more than three-year saga that saw yet another athlete put behind bars, separated from family and friends and losing the riches and lifestyle most only dream about.

One Eagles source tells Len Pasquarelli of The Sports Xchange that Michael Vick has "not really (lobbied) all that hard" for the Eagles to pursue free agent Plaxico Burress.

This report fits the prevailing belief that Burress' camp is driving all of the speculation on his potential landing spots. Pasquarelli expects just 3-4 NFL teams to seriously entertain signing Plaxico. "He's got a lot of (stuff) to overcome," said one NFC personnel director. "That resume definitely has some holes." Of the 31 receivers with 60 or more catches last year, only two were older than Plax will be at the start of this season. Related: Eagles Source: The Sports Xchange

Coach Andy Reid suggested Wednesday that the Eagles have yet to discuss whether or not to pursue free agent Plaxico Burress.

"We haven't even gone there," said Reid. "There is nothing we can do right now." This is where we'd like to point out that Reid has picked up a dirty little habit of bending the truth to suit his purposes the past couple of years. We find it hard to believe the Eagles front office hasn't discussed the pros and cons of adding Plax. Source: Philly.com
