Update - Report: 49ers plan to sign Daunte Culpepper

Recommended Posts

Per Rotoworld.com:

Free agent QB Daunte Culpepper will reportedly work out for the 49ers Monday.

Coach Jim Harbaugh spent the offseason hyping Alex Smith, ostensibly because he saw a lot of himself in the embattled former No. 1 overall pick. It took just a few series in the preseason opener for Harbaugh to realize he might be better off with veteran competition for Smith. Culpepper hasn't played at a high level in half a decade. If they're are serious about giving him a shot, they better not be planning on competing in the division

well if you can't have one competent QB you might as well have a bunch of incompetent ones.

Per Rotoworld.com:

A source tells CSN Bay Area that the 49ers plan to sign free agent Daunte Culpepper to a one-year contract.

The move obviously reeks of desperation, but at least the 49ers are acknowledging a problem. They're not going to go anywhere with Alex Smith at quarterback. Per CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, however, the Niners would only view Culpepper as a third-stringer with experience who could play in a pinch if needed. The 34-year-old would not be added to compete for the starting job. Aug 15, 2:57 PM

Meh it's just a contingency signing. He won't be starting. Or at least he better not be...

Heard this on ESPN earlier and I thought it was just speculation. I don't see how this move benefits anyone....other than Daunte being paid for essentially being a distraction to Smith (if they are serious about him not competing for the starting role).

I think Gruden used that same logic in Tampa.
