2012, Best Player in the NFL

Recommended Posts

This may be a bit of creep going on, but I figured this would be as good a time as any to bring this up. For the past two years I've been running these tournaments so the members of TGP could determine the best player in the NFL in a method everyone would agree with. Last year Troy Polamalu narrowly edged out Aaron Rodgers for that title, but things might turn out differently this time around. I've also introduced a new method of going about this process from last year, before there was a preliminary round, a seeding/elimination round, and then a straight tournament of 128 players.

Here are the logistics for this new tournament:

Prelim Rounds, Each team gets 5 representatives, along with a pool of wildcards. This pool of wildcards will be reduced to 32 overall, 4 per division.

Prelim Voting: Voters choose 6 best players on each team, and rank them from best to 6th best. The 5 players with the most votes move on, the rest of the players with votes move to the wild card. If there are ties for the 5th spot, those players are dropped to the wildcard round, and more wildcards will be added to that division.

Example Vote: (Chiefs)

+6 Branden Albert

+5 Eric Berry

+4 Derrick Johnson

+3 Tamba Hali

+2 Brandon Flowers

+1 Brandon Carr

Example: (Final voting for the Chiefs)

1. Eric Berry +35

2. Derrick Johnson +32

3. Tamba Hali +20

4. Jamaal Charles +15

5t. Branden Albert +8

5t. Brandon Flowers +8

---

6. Brandon Carr +6

...Other Chiefs...

All of the chiefs players with less votes than Charles will have been dropped down into the wild card pool, and only those top 4 players will be for sure in the next round.

Wildcard round: The wildcards in each team of a division are put into a big pool. From there, the top 4 players in each group are decided by voters taking their 4 best in each group and ranking them from best to 4th. Ties for 4th in these groups go into a final pool if necessary between all divisions.

Example: (Wild Card AFC West Final Voting)

1. Tim Tebow +32

2. Louis Vasquez + 23

3. Brandon Carr +15

4t. Stanford Routt +6

4t. Robert Ayers +6

---

6. Antoine Cason +4

7. Willis McGahee +3

Tebow, Vasquez and Carr would become AFC West Wildcards, while Routt, Ayers and Cason would move to the final wildcard round in order to fill the spots left by the 5th Chief (Prelim condition) and the 4th AFC West wild card. They could also fill in at other divisions if need be, but surviving wildcards will fill in at their own division if possible.

Final Wildcard: Any stragglers left to fill in the holes in divisions are brought here. They'd be the players with the highest votes in each wild card that didn't make it, or the players tied for 4th in wildcards. There may be more wild card losing players added as necessary due to the conditions of the preliminary round. This group will undergo a sudden death hurt heal round, where players are eliminated until the wildcards fill necessary holes.

Example: (Hurt Heal Final Wildcards)

Jordy Nelson 1

Stanford Routt 1

Robert Ayers 1

Michael Vick 1

Jairus Byrd 1

Antoine Bethea 1

etc etc 1

Voters would give +1 to the player they thought was best in this group, and -1 to the player they thought was worst. This continues until there are only as many final wildcards left as there are spots to fill. This step may not even be necessary at all depending on how voting goes.

Once the 192 players are decided, 24 per division, each division is broken into groups of 4, where the top vote getters in the preliminary rounds for each team lead a division. From there, players are arranged via snake order (using vote totals in prelim rounds) until each sub division has 6 players in it, making 32 divisions in all. Each division will be named after the team the top vote getter is from. (I.E the division with Eric Berry in it would be called the Chiefs division.)

Round Robin: Each division has players go in head to head voting matches for 24 hours. After each player faces every other player in the division once, the players with the two best records will move on the final tournament. Ties will be allowed for this round, much like soccer and the world cup. If there are ties for second place after the matches are done, a simple 24 hour head to head tiebreaker will play out. If there are 3 or more players are tied for second in a division, it's simply a 3 or more way tiebreaker voting match.

Once the 64 finalists are decided, the tournament becomes straight head to head voting. I may make it double elimination, but it's more likely to be a single elim with voting for 3rd, 5th and 7th place matches. Seeding will be sorted as fairly and evenly spaced as I can muster. The tournament goes on until only the best player in the NFL is left standing.

This process will do quite a few things right. One of the problems we had last year is that good teams were given near equal clout against bad teams, and that the seeding/elimination round didn't do much for seeding, leaving it to prelim results, which were scewed by some teams getting more votes than others. Another issue was the fact that strong players in the division often eliminated each other before making the final rounds.

Here, more players from good teams will get in, while only the best players on bad teams can get in easily. This should ensure that we're looking at the best field possible, and the most accurate results. The round robin method hasn't been tested yet, but I believe it will give us a better representation of who the top players are when we get to the field of 64.

I'll work on a way for the super 64 tournament bracket to be fairly distributed, and this thing will start a week or two after the Super Bowl, since it'll need a bit of extra time to run through this off-season.

This may seem like a lot of words, but the process should explain itself as we go on through. This is also the best place to have any questions you have about this tournament answered.

Ok, we're gonna start the preliminary rounds now. These should go on for a while, so let's get a lot of discussion and a lot of votes for the teams in each division.

Good to see you're getting this thing going again, Razor. Always makes for fun discussion. Though isn't it a bit early this year?

It is. However the Prelim round is gonna go on for a while yet, I was thinking about a month or so for it. The structure needs quite a bit more time too, since there are more rounds to go through.

The Preliminary round is all settled. Most teams have the full 5 reps, but some teams like the Giants only have 4 at this stage. Luckily the wildcard round is available for those shortchanged by the talent on their team to make a second chance run. Each division will get 4 wildcards but due to some quirks I made in the rules, they may not be from that division. This method should hopefully ensure that the best players will get in.

I'll edit this post to put the current results in. The Wildcard Round should start tomorrow (today rather), probably sometime in the evening.

The round robin divisions are now complete. I probably won't start the round robin until the super bowl has been played, if only so I can kick if off during the off-season. As you can expect, each player in a division will play each other player in that division once. After 24 hours the polls close. Wins, Losses, and Draws are all acceptable results. Once each player has faced off in his 5 matches, the records are tallied up and the top two players in each division move on. I have been considering the top three, but unless I get some good feedback for it, I'll just go with the top two.

Tiebreakers will be settled in this order:

1. Head 2 Head (should cover most situations)

2. Vote Differential (should cover the rest)

3. 24 hour head to head sudden death match.

4. If tiebreaker 3 still results in a tie after 24 hours, the next vote will settle it.

Now then, I have the round robin schedule whipped up. Each person in the division can be numbered for 1 to 6, 1 at the top and 6 at the bottom. When you count like this, the round robin schedule looks like this for each division.

Match 1:

1 v. 2

3 v. 4

5 v. 6

Match 2:

1 v. 3

2 v. 6

4 v. 5

Match 3:

1 v. 4

2 v. 5

3 v. 6

Match 4:

1 v. 5

2 v. 3

4 v. 6

Match 5:

1 v. 6

2 v. 4

3 v. 5

That's right we've got our first tie of the round robin. I'm using World Cup scoring rules, so Wins get 3 points, ties get 1, and losses get 0. So basically it's better to go (W-L-D) 2-2-1 than it is 1-1-3 even if those are both .500 records.
