2012 Coaching Carousel

Recommended Posts

Zimmer and Chudzinski would both be a thousand times better than Fisher, in my opinion. Untested, sure, but their coordinator resumes are superb.

Fun fact: Rob Chudzinski was the offensive coordinator for the Browns in 2007. Derek Anderson was a pro bowler, the offense was ranked 8th overall, and the team went 10-6, second in the AFC North. Eric Mangini fired him the next season.

If he can make the Browns into a decent team and make Derek Anderson look like a good QB, imagine what he might do as a head coach.

All lies. Chud sucks and no one should take him as a head coach.

LIES.

STAY. AWAY. FROM. CHUD.

The Atlanta Falcons have hired Mike Nolan as defensive coordinator, the team just announced.

This is a very strong hire by Atlanta coach Mike Smith. Nolan’s a former head coach of the San Francisco 49ers. He spent the last two seasons as Miami’s defensive coordinator. He also previously worked as defensive coordinator for the Redskins, Jets, Ravens, Giants and Broncos.

I think it’s fair to say Nolan is an upgrade over former defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder, who left to become defensive coordinator at Auburn. Through most of Smith’s tenure, VanGorder’s defenses weren’t great, although the Falcons improved somewhat on that side of the ball in 2011.

Nolan has some good talent to work with in linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, cornerback Dunta Robinson and defensive tackles Corey Peters and Jonathan Babineaux. The Falcons also have to make decisions on if they want to re-sign defensive end John Abraham, middle linebacker Curtis Lofton and cornerback Brent Grimes.

This also is a victory in the NFC South for the Falcons. New Orleans reportedly had some interest in Nolan and at least one of the candidates who has interviewed for the Tampa Bay job had indicated he thought he could make Nolan part of the package.

Good hire IMO.

PFT:

Here's a weird twist on the news today that the Colts have fired head coach Jim Caldwell: Before the firing, the Colts were beginning the process of assembling a coaching staff for 2012 — and Caldwell was involved in that process.

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reports that former Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo interviewed for the Colts defensive coordinator position, and Caldwell was one of the people Spagnuolo interviewed with, along with other team officials.

It's surprising that the Colts would have Caldwell involved in interviewing assistant coaching candidates one day and then fire him the next. Typically teams get the head coach in place first before they start interviewing assistants.

But the Colts have done a lot of surprising things this offseason. It's probably safe to say there will be some more surprises coming out of Indianapolis in the coming months.

It already sucks that the Falcons signed Nolan to be their DC, but if the Saints get Spags I'm gonna be really pissed.

I love that we are interviewing all these guys, but mean while, pussy footing around we are losing out on really good coordinator candidates.

On the plus side, the Miami Herald is reporting that Mike Zimmer is not a finalist/in the running for the Dolphins HC'ing vacancy. Good news for us.

@ArmandoSalguero (Armando Salguero):

The Dolphins are on to 2nd round interviews with Joe Philbin interviewing Wed. and Mike McCoy scheduled for Thursday. miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_de…

@ArmandoSalguero (Armando Salguero):

Todd Bowles will also get a second interview. I am told Mike Zimmer has been eliminated from consideration.

Really good hire by the Falcons to get Mike Nolan. I wonder if they'll be switching to the 3-4? If they could find themselves a nose tackle, they'd be pretty much set. Edwards-Lofton-Weatherspoon-Abraham woul be a hell of a LBer tandem...

It'll be interesting to see if any of the coaches on the remaining four staffs leaves. There was talk of the Ravens DC leaving earlier in the year.

Per RotoWorld:

According to the Miami Herald, Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy believes he is the leading candidate for the Dolphins' head-coaching job.

McCoy showed his confidence by turning down an interview opportunity with the Raiders. He'll have a second interview with the Dolphins on Thursday. A source tells the Herald that Oakland brass was "not thrilled" McCoy turned them down. Packers OC Joe Philbin and in-house candidate Todd Bowles are McCoy's competition. Our suspicion today was that McCoy had emerged as the favorite in Miami. Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has spoken of finding his "young Don Shula," and the 39-year-old McCoy has a relatively impressive track record as a coordinator in both his Denver and Carolina stops.

Jaguars hired former Bucs OC Greg Olson as assistant head coach/QBs.

Allowed to walk after Raheem Morris was fired, Olson had also interviewed for the passing game/quarterbacks coach position in Chicago. Olson earned kudos for his development of Josh Freeman, but was forced to reel in the offense in 2011 to compensate for his QB's shaky decision-making. He'll have an even steeper challenge on his hands with Blaine Gabbert.

God damn, if we lose both our coordinators this year...

McCoy might be a hyper conservative sort of coach, but he had some inventive gameplans prior to the game which really worked for us.

Allen had our defense at it's peak in the middle of the season, but got soft right near the end. They're both young and I think they can improve a bit more.

The Dolphins coaching search is down to a two-horse race between Broncos OC Mike McCoy and Packers OC Joe Philbin, according to the Miami Herald.

Interim coach Todd Bowles is a fallback option if owner Stephen Ross "cannot decide between Philbin and McCoy." If it was any other front office, we'd be shocked at that line of reasoning. McCoy is reportedly GM Jeff Ireland's man, though Ross "also thinks very highly of Philbin." Bowles remained in the mix until the end because "his presentation to Ross, Ireland and consultant Carl Peterson was impressive." The Dolphins' decision is expected to be announced on Friday.

Per Rotoworld.com:

The Palm Beach Post expects new Dolphins coach Joe Philbin to give a "serious look" at hiring former Packers coach Mike Sherman as his offensive coordinator.

Sherman was who hired Philbin in Green Bay, making him an assistant offensive line coach in 2003. The two are apparently close friends, and coached together as far back as the late 1970s. Sherman is also under consideration for the head-coaching job in Tampa Bay, but landing in Miami seems far more likely. Jan 22 - 12:12 PM
