SEVEN FIELDS, Pa. -- Pittsburgh Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson has been hospitalized after suffering burns to his arms and legs in a house fire early Friday morning.

Authorities said the fire broke out about 3 a.m. in Wilson's Jameson Way home in Seven Fields, Butler County.

Firefighters told Borough Manager Tom Smith the blaze started in the kitchen and Wilson suffered "moderate to severe" burns.

"I could just smell smoke," said neighbor Dave Vanatta. "I woke up, came downstairs and saw his kitchen on fire."

Vanatta told Channel 11 News he immediately called 911 then started pounded on Wilson's door when he saw the fire. About five minutes later, Vanatta said, Wilson came out.

"He was real delirious," said Vanatta. "He didn't know what was going on. He kept saying, 'I'm alright. Thank you. Thank you. You could tell he wasn't alright."

Vanatta said Wilson was wearing boxer shorts and had "pretty severe" burns from head to toe.

"His arms and legs were pitch black," said neighbor Dave Sebasta.

Wilson, 50, was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital for treatment. He will not travel with the team for Sunday's wild card game in Denver.

"First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with Kirby and his entire family," Steelers President Art Rooney said in a statement. "We are saddened to hear about this unfortunate situation but we know that he has the best medical care in the country treating him. The entire organization is praying for Kirby to have a full recovery and we will be by his side through this difficult time." Later in the morning, a Steelers representative went into the burned home with a property manager and insurance adjuster to secure Wilson's personal property.

Wilson is in his fifth season as running backs coach, joining the staff when head coach Mike Tomlin was hired in 2007.

Steelers RBs coach Kirby Wilson suffered burns on 30-50 percent of his body in Thursday night's house fire.

The good news for Wilson is that the burns were "serious but not life-threatening." He's currently in a medically induced coma, and it would be a great story if Wilson could get back on the sideline to accompany the Steelers if they advance past the Wild Card round. For now, his well-being is most important. Wilson has coached Pittsburgh's running backs since 2007.
