Eagles owner Jeff Luries message to Andy Reid

Recommended Posts

Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie made it clear earlier this offseason that Eagles coach Andy Reid was on the hot seat. Improvement was needed. On Thursday, Lurie made sure no one misunderstood.

Debate: Good, but not good enough

Who will be the best team to miss the playoffs in 2012? Some of our experts think Michael Vick's Eagles are at risk. More ...

Lurie said at a news conference "8-8 would not" be good enough for Reid to return as head coach in 2013.

"We need substantial improvement," Lurie said compared to last year's record. "We have a very good team on paper."

Consider the gauntlet thrown down. This puts a lot of pressure on Reid, but Lurie didn't say anything that we didn't already know. Lurie just said it in a nice quotable way that will be featured in Friday's newspaper and then repeated all season long. It could go down as unnecessary a quote as Vince Young's "Dream Team" missive.

Lurie said that any potential contract extension talks for Reid will wait until after the 2012 season. If the Eagles do as well as our NFL.com analysts think, Reid should have no problem.

Another disappointing year and Lurie made it clear that he will blow the whole thing up, including the longest tenured coach in the league and possibly Michael Vick with him.

If Andy does lose his job next year for whatever reason, I bet you some retired head coaches that have turned down other teams would start popping out the wood works; Jon Gruden, Bill Cowher, maybe Bill Parcels or Tony Dungy.

lol... :shifty:

Idk, the title says 8-8, but Lurie expressed all he's worried about is a championship.

You have to hear his full press conference to hear what he had to say. He basically pointed out that everyone has to step up. He even brought up Vick that he wants to see him play at that elite lv that he did in 2010. He even brought up other elite QBs like Aaron Rodgers and elite passing QB teams like Green Bay, New Orleans, and New England. He gave great respect to those 3 teams and their talent level at length. Lurie expressed that our organization has experienced success at every level except the superbowl.. his eyes are only on the prize. He knows we have the talent but wants it to be put to good use. Sounds like he was putting his word down in a very polite professional and indirect manner (innuendo) that ppl have to step up this year or changes will be made. Reid and Vick it sounds like. He was solely focused on winning a championship and that message rung throughout the conference. I liked it. Superbowl or Bust. We need a :trophy:

It all depends on the never ending Mike Vick Injury saga. If he stays healthy and can perform like he did in 2010, that team is in great shape. But. . He won't stay healthy, not going to happen. So they better hope that Foles can carry his pre-season success into real regular season scenarios.

If the defense sucks, Castillo is canned and Todd Bowles is our defensive coordinator, at the very least. Bowles could be an in-house head coach candidate if Lurie decides to clean house.

Idk if Bowles would be next up for the Job only after 1 year with the team. i could see Lurie grabbing someone outside the organization.

I'll take that bet. Sounds like wishing thinking

Bill Cowher wants the Giants job and nothing else.

Not wishing thinking, just theorizing what if situations. Honestly, I don't want Andy to go anywhere. I'm just not sold on our DEF Coord yet... but that was Andys call =\.

Mav, this will be Bowles' first season with the Eagles organization, so he would likely be spared from an in-house purging, as he is not an entrenched member of the Andy Reid coaching tree.

Whoever they choose better not try to revamp that offense. While they may be able to replace Vick with Foles easily Desean Jackson's gamebreaking speed will have dissipated and he will just be a really fast guy among many in a few years.

Another brilliant ownership move to feed the media vultures bye undermining his head coach before the start of a season.

Lol... kinda have to agree there... You know he had this same conversation with Andy Reid so he didn't necessarily have to say that part to the public. He mainly said 8-8 is unacceptable that that our organization has experienced just about every type of success besides a superbowl. He never said no superbowl = Andy gone per say.. but give the media an inch and they will ride it 101 yards :yep:
