Official 2013-2014 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Thread

How would Shiancoe help though? He is a 35 year old who didn't catch a single pass last year while playing with Tom Brady. TE is not a big position in our offense anyways, we're better just rolling with what we have than wasting a roster spot on a guy who just doesn't have the juice in his legs to play pro football anymore.

Didn't say we should sign him, just said I want to make sure we give him a good look because I don't think any of the TE's on the roster right now are anything special. And I know it's not much of a difference but he is not 35. He just turned 33 last month.

From what I've been reading, Chris Owusu has been very impressive so far through TC. Standing out from all the other guys for probably the last WR spot.

Great to hear Revis is looking good. I hate seeing great and entertaining players to watch regress due to injury. Glad he's on schedule and hope he's at 100% week 1. I'm waiting to see this No-Fly-Zone.

I've heard nothing but good stuff about Jonathan Banks. Lots of people are raving about this kid. Really excited to see how he looks once the games come around. :yep: Revis and him could make a pretty deadly CB duo.

Here are nuggets and notes from Bucs practice, Day 6 of training camp 2013.

* Kevin Ogletree schools Johnthan Banks on a comeback route TD from JF5 along left sideline. Schiano shakes head in disgust.

* MW19 goes low to dig up JF5 pass for 18 yards.

* JF5 to MW19 big gain along right sideline.

* Fake crowd noise!

* Michael Smith with a little shake and bake inside but goes down. Schiano bellows, "Finish, finish!" Smith bounces up, biting the football, and continues running.

* Nate Byham with a catch off a beautiful JF5 play action fake.(hope to see more of this.) Next play on a flea-flicker, blitzing Ahmad Black forces JF5 to unload ball.

* Derek Hagen has a short pass bounce off his fingertips on a crossing pattern.

* Josh Freeman threads needle to Kevin Ogletree.

* Lavonte David strips a pass out of Mike James' mitts.

* Granted, Davin Joseph and Carl Nicks are limited but sure seems like Adrian Clayborn and Lavonte David are in backfield quite a bit. (smile)

* Vincent Jackson with a short catch nearly batted down by Mark Barron.

* Michael Smith lit up in backfield by Jonathan Casillas.

* Derek Hagen nearly made a circus catch against Braden Smith along left sideline but couldn't hang on.

* Chris Owusu makes one-handed catch along left sideline in drills. (keeps on going)

* Adam Hayward beaten badly by TE Danny Noble. (a TE sighting!)

* Nice jump and fingertip grab by Mike Williams on a short throw.

* Freeman throws behind Kevin Ogletree

* Vincent Jackson with a drop on a very easy-to-handle ball.

* Interesting drill: WRs fight with DBs for pass over shoulder.

* Chris Owusu fielding punts. As much work as he is getting, it appears he is very much on coaches' radar just like fans' radar. (like)

* Branden Smith (Georgia CB) now returning punts.

* Mike James returns kickoff straight up the middle.

* Captain of the inactive list Michael Smith returns a long kickoff and the fans respond with loud ovation.

* Bucs rock star general Mark Dominik walks past bleachers and receives standing ovation from fans.

*TE Nate Byham getting work with the first team in red-zone work.

*Undrafted rookie Rashaan Melvin with two instances of good coverage in one red zone period.

*Bryan Cox screaming praise to Daniel Te'o-Nesheim for his work at left end on a run play.

*Cox taking a long teaching moment with Williams Gholston on the field.

*Camp meat alert: Nice effort and technique by Adam Smith working at left tackle.

*Peyton Hillis turns the corner on Steven Means for a long gain. Hillis is powerful-looking dude.

*Keith Tandy slips as last line of defense following a Vincent Jackson catch. TD.

*DaQuan Bowers, late in practice, appears to succumb to the heat. Or he's in deep prayer. (must get better)

*Michael Smith runs into nosetackle Derek Landri and goes backwards.

*Najee Goode plays with a lot of attitude.

*Mike Williams with a good catch and escape of Rashaan Melvin.

*Steven Means is limping late in practice but playing through it.

*Sean Baker ends practice with an interception of Mike Glennon in the two-minute offense. Heinous throw.

I'm hearing a ton of hype for this Chris Owusu dude at WR, but it feels like I've seen this before. Every year we all seem to drool over some WR in camp while he fails to make an impact in the regular season. I do expect Owusu makes the team as the 5th WR behind Jackson, Williams, Ogletree and Underwood though.

Pretty sure Owusu looked good at one of the 9ers camps one year.

Per PewterReport

Top 10 Buccaneers In Training Camp After Week 1-

1. RB Doug Martin

Martin is having a fantastic camp and appears ready to pick up where he left off in 2012. Whether it is juking middle linebacker Mason Foster out of his jock on a middle screen pass, or using his burst to break off a big run, Martin looks electric on the practice fields of One Buccaneer Place. The Bucs are incorporating the second-year star out of Boise State more and more into the passing game and he will be an even bigger threat in Tampa Bay’s offense in 2013.

2. WR Vincent Jackson

Jackson, who was Martin’s Pro Bowl companion last year in Hawaii, is still dominating after achieving personal bests with 72 catches for 1,384 yards in 2012. Jackson has been seeing time at his familiar split end position, but is also getting plenty of plays inside as a slot receiver in Mike Sullivan’s offense. The only cornerback that has shown he can hang with the 6-foot-5, 230-pound receiver is rookie Johnthan Banks, who is 6-foot-2, 185 pounds.

3. DT Gerald McCoy

The Bucs’ Pro Bowl defensive tackle looked like he was in great shape last August and that set the tone for McCoy being able to play in all 16 games for the first time in his NFL career and record a career-best five tackles. A leaner, more muscular McCoy is in even better shape this year and has had a dominant first week of training camp. It doesn’t help the Bucs offense to have Ted Larsen and Cody Wallace manning the guard positions instead of Carl Nicks and Davin Joseph because McCoy is simply owning the line of scrimmage in camp thus far.

4. RT Demar Dotson

While left tackle Donald Penn and center Jeremy Zuttah have been steady, Dotson has been superb in pass protection in practice. In front of thousands at the Bucs night practice at Raymond James Stadium, he continued to stifle defensive end Da’Quan Bowers, which something he has down with regularity through the first week of training camp. Dotson is trying to fend off a charge from newcomer Gabe Carimi for the starting right tackle job, and his exceptional pass protection skills have him entrenched as the current leader.

5. LB Lavonte David

The speedy David has been playing even faster this year because he has a year’s worth of experience in Bill Sheridan’s defense. Whether it’s sniffing out a failed attempt at a wide receiver pass from Mike Williams, or sacking quarterback Josh Freeman on a blitz, David has been making several big plays during the first week of training camp. Most importantly, David has been very consistent and has yet to have a bad outing through the first five days of camp. David is the fastest, most instinctive linebacker on the roster and his skills have been on display every day at One Buc Place.

6. CB Johnthan Banks

Banks has been a sensational addition to the team and is picking up where he left off during the team’s OTAs (organized team activities) and the mandatory mini-camp. During the second training camp practice, Banks picked off Freeman and has broken up several passes intended for Jackson and Williams. Tampa Bay’s second-round draft pick has yet to play like a rookie and is putting himself in prime position to be a starter opposite Darrelle Revis. At the very least, the 6-foot-2, 185-pounder should be the team’s nickel cornerback on opening day in New York due to his physical playing style, his quick hands and instincts.

7. WR Mike Williams

The Bucs’ starting flanker entered camp with a brand new contract extension and is earning every penny. Williams has made several acrobatic catches in practice, just as he has over his first three years in the league. While he must become more consistent on catching slant passes across the middle, Williams has opened eyes with his exceptional hands returning punts. While it’s doubtful that the Bucs would risk using him as the team’s full-time punt returner, Williams has done enough in camp to suggest that the Bucs use him strategically and situationally when the game is on the line this fall.

8. DE Adrian Clayborn

While Bowers was getting most of the pre-training camp hype because he’s replacing departed starter Michael Bennett, who was Tampa Bay’s leading sacker in 2012, Clayborn is off to the better start. Looking lean and mean, Clayborn has made a full recovery from his knee injury and has fully participated in training camp. In fact, Clayborn is further ahead than either Revis or Joseph in terms of being able to participate in team drills in camp. Clayborn has been getting a stiff challenge from Penn, who is in phenomenal shape this year, on a regular basis, and wins some of those matchups. Clayborn is laser-focused on a big comeback year.

9. WR Chris Owusu

While Kevin Ogletree and Tiquan Underwood are the featured competitors for the Bucs’ third receiver role, Owusu has been surprisingly thrust into the mix, too. Smooth and speedy, the former practice squad receiver has formed an unlikely rapport with Freeman and become one of his favorite targets in training camp. Owusu has been solidly entrenched with the second-string, but has gotten an occasional rep with the first team. If he can maintain his production throughout training camp, Owusu could be one of the team’s biggest surprises in August.

10. RB Brian Leonard

The competition for the backup running back position behind Martin is wide open and features the likes of second-year Buccaneer Michael Smith, who has raw speed, rookie Mike James, who has some wiggle and good hands, newcomer Peyton Hillis, who has experience and power, and Leonard, who has versatility and a nice burst. Leonard had an impressive, long touchdown run in the Bucs’ night practice and has made the most of his opportunities to catch and carry the ball as he makes a charge for the No. 2 running back job. The fact that Leonard can also block and serve as a backup at fullback to Erik Lorig makes him even more valuable.

Roy Cummings ‏of TBO...tweets

Bucs coach Greg Schiano says DE Adrian Clayborn's groin strain will keep him out a few days, but it's not as serious as initially thought. Adrian Clayborn injured his groin yesterday and spent the day on the stationary bike, but the Buccaneers expect he'll be fine.

[sigh of relief]

Per Joebucsfan

Bucs Disappointed In Da’Quan Bowers

There is no question the Bucs needed and wanted to upgrade their defensive pass rush. The Bucs are so intent on getting heat on quarterbacks, former front-seven coach Bryan Cox, arguably the Bucs’ best defensive assistant, was given a new title and new assignment: He solely and only works on pass rush drills and coaching.

By letting last year’s sack leader Michael Bennett walk away, the Bucs have put a lot of faith (and pressure) on Da’Quan Bowers, who has been nagged by injuries since he was drafted in 2011.

It was a controversial move and reading into a piece on now-injured Adrian Clayborn typed by Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune, it seems Bucs coaches are not doing backflips over Bowers’ practices after the first week of training camp.

"In at least one case up front, the Bucs still aren’t sure if their No. 1 guy is worthy. That’s at left end, where third-year pro Da’Quan Bowers has replaced Bennett. The Bucs think Bowers is ready to make an impact as an edge rusher and run stopper, but his play through the first week of training camp has not necessarily been up to their standards.

“He’s played at a high level (in the past), but he’s done it as a situational pass rusher,” Schiano said. “Now, he has to learn how to play down after down and still be a situational pass rusher.

“Situational pass rusher is not a bad deal. You go out there, and 95 percent of the time they throw the ball. So, you don’t have to worry about stopping the run. You don’t have to do the dirty work. When you get to where you’re a first- and second-down player as well as a pass rusher, well, then your world really gets harder. So, we’ll see.”

This is the biggest question on the defensive side of the ball outside of Darrelle Revis’ knee. Can Bowers live up to his talent? It seems, per Cummings’ article, a bit of doubt has crept into the minds of coaches.

Look, Joe knows there is a long, long road to go before the Bucs play the Jets to open the season in New Jersey. One bad week of practice does not a season make.

But the Bucs, namely Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik, put a lot of eggs into Bowers’ basket, rather than signing someone like John Abraham, who was dangling on the line all summer for the Bucs (or any team) to sign.

It was, and is, a gamble. A very big and perhaps a very costly gamble.

Chris Owusu and Rashaan Melvin are favorites of Bucs' coaching apparently. Have looked really good and impressive in camp. They keep that up in the preseason there is no doubt that they make the team.

Roy Cummings tweeted today that Bowers had his best practice of TC so far today, but he has not played as well as the team hoped. I was getting worried when I didn't hear much about Bowers throughout TC so far. Seems like he has been pretty quiet and hasn't had a big impact. He really needs to step up or we could be in deep trouble with the pass rush this year, especially if Clayborn goes down (at least it's good his injury doesn't seem bad).

Anyways, here's some notes on today's practice from JBF:

* Revis is in pads but may as well be in a Speedo as he is standing on sidelines with during position-specific drills.

* There are many areas of concern for the Bucs. Running back not among them. Doug Martin very sharp.

* Leonard Johnson with very sticky, physical coverage on Kevin Ogletree.

* Revis, Nicks, Joseph all on field at once. Albeit walk-throughs.

* Revis is “covering” VJax.

* VJax drops perfect pass from JF5 on a comeback.

* JF5 on a rollout hits Mike Williams in the hands on a crossing pattern. JF5 is absolutely on point today.

* Nate Byham with a catch along left sideline. Freeman has steadily improved each of last three practices. Really sharp thus far today.

* Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik sits for about 20 minutes in the bleachers with the proletariat Bucs fans.

* JF5 hits Mike Williams in the numbers along right sideline.

* JF5 threads needle between Dashon Goldson and Ahmad Black to VJax for touchdown in back of end zone.

* Mike Williams with diving catch from Mike Glennon. Later, Rashaan Melvin breaks up pass for Derek Hagan.

* Najee Goode tips pass for Zach Miller in end zone.

* Johnthan Banks misses easy pick.

* Freeman may be as accurate today as Joe has ever seen him. Mike Williams? He’s got a case of the dropsies today.

* Steven Means, playing RDE, flashing a little in backfield.

* Freeman bomb to Nate Byham along right sideline. “This Josh” needs to show up on Sundays. He is lights out accurate today.

* Freeman flushed left and hits tight end Tim Wright in the numbers.

* Even Mike Glennon throwing a bit better.

* Freeman over middle to VJax wide open and Freeman puts ball right in his breadbasket.

* Freeman has ball batted away by Steven Means and ball falls into hands of Doug Martin, who takes ball up left sideline for big gain.

* Freeman with a beautiful pass to Derek Hagan just off his hands down the right sideline but pass interference on Rashaan Melvin.

* Two-minute-drill time.

* Terrible snap from shotgun to JF5 and Means nearly has fumble recovery.

* Another JF5 bullet down the right sideline. Right. On. The. Numbers.

* MW19 on a comeback from JF5 right sideline. Not sure if Freeman has thrown a bad pass all morning.

* Don’t know if Josh Freeman has had a better training camp practice. Today, he looks every bit the franchise QB the Bucs have always hoped for.

* Running out of words to describe JF5′s accuracy today. If he plays like this on Sundays, Bucs offense could be downright scary.

* Another perfect pass. Joe had to shake his head a few times. JF5 is Brees-like today.

* Fake crowd noise!

* False start Gabe Carimi.

* Mike Glennon channels his inner Brett Favre by running right to avoid Means and throwing across the field to Nate Byham. You won’t often get away with that when the live bullets are flying, son.

* Glennon to Chris Owusu who runs about 30 yards down right sideline for TD.

* Glennon to Williams’ back shoulder in traffic for big gain

Looks like Free tore it up today in practice and his accuracy was spot on the whole day. Love hearing that.

ABSOLUTELY! He was Brees-like! lol, This is Great news! You go Josh...

Also read that Peyton Hillis is looking beastly, bruising and fast out there as well. Man I hope Hillis makes the roster, I know this guy can return to his old form...and if he does, we are gonna have one brutal running game.

Still don't understand why we didn't sign Abraham or Freeney, both could've started or been good depth. Relying on Bowers and Clayborn is not a good idea.

I'll have to agree. If we were willing to go out and sign Peyton Hillis, why not those guys?

Definitely agree that passing on a vet DE was a mistake.

Apparently, Freeman had another very good day of practice.

Also, starting to think Rashaan Melvin has a decent shot to make the team. Schiano and other coaches have been praising the guy and Barron just mentioned that him and Banks are making a lot of plays in the secondary.

First unofficial depthchart

If Melvin (CB) and Owusu (WR) keep this up throughout TC/Preseason they will not only make the squad, but possiblly move into higher positions/roles. Barring some type of big collapse by either, I think they've already made the squad though.

Mike James (RB) has been getting 1st and 2nd team reps at RB ahead of Leonard the last few practices apparently. Seems like Hillis and Mike Smith will be fighting for a POSSIBLE 4th RB slot.

We'll see.

So far it's still early and it's only been TC practices. Preseason games and practice can really change things for the better or worse for a lot of these guys.

EDIT:

@TKras:

Just stressing, the #Bucs listed it as the "unofficial" depth chart. Officially, that's not what's taking place during camp #JustSaying

That lines up with the tweets/reports during TC by him and other reporters. Melvin has been getting 1st and 2nd team reps ahead of everyone minus Banks. Mike James has been getting second team reps the last few practices ahead of Leonard and the other RBs. Owusu getting reps with first, second and third team with VJax, MikeWill and ahead of Tiquan and Ogletree. Again, we'll see.

Freeman looked pretty sharp this morning, throwing some really nice balls during drills with WR's. Both 1st and 2nd units kinda stunk it up during the two-minute drill but the 3rd stringers were impressive. Eric Page made an unreal, really-trying-to-make-the-squad, diving, Superman-ish catch, over the middle to close out the morning session.

Best part of the day for me was when G-Mac hopped the fence, sat down next to my daughter, and then signed her shirt.

Bucs' Darrelle Revis ready for return to 'Revis Island'

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000226356/article/bucs-darrelle-revis-ready-for-return-to-revis-island

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded for Darrelle Revis with the belief that the All-Pro cornerback would be every bit the player he was before tearing up his knee with the New York Jets last season.

Revis recently told Peter King of TheMMQB.com that he's highly confident he'll be ready for the regular-season opener and doesn't expect the knee to cause him trouble as the campaign wears on.

"I'm very confident. Very," Revis said. "My mindset is, when they tell me I could cut, I figured it meant I could cut hard on it. I did, and it didn't hurt and the knee didn't swell. And I've been out there putting pressure on it and it hasn't hurt. So I feel when I get out there, I'll be confident I can do everything I need to."

King reported that Revis has experienced no setbacks and the knee has "responded well to his testing, torquing and quick-twitch movements."

Coach Greg Schiano hasn't made up his mind about playing Revis in a preseason game, but he told King that, come the regular season, the shutdown corner won't be used gingerly. Schiano spoke of a return to "Revis Island," with Darrelle going head-to-head with the best receiver on the field.

"Coach and I have talked about it," Revis said, "and he's open to it. It'll be predicated on the game plan. But I think you'll see it a lot. I might have to dust the cobwebs off, but it's the way I play best. I've said, 'Coach, this is the way I play best,' and I think he agrees."

NFL Network's Rich Hollenberg reported that Revis participated in 11-on-11 walkthroughs Monday. When Revis lined up across from receiver Vincent Jackson, it drew the "hugest applause from the crowd ... they were chanting his name."

The next step for Revis is 7-on-7s, but "he's making the progress that they expected him to make," Hollenberg was told by general manager Mark Dominik. His return in time for the regular season would, of course, set up a juicy matchup in Week 1, with Revis squaring off against Rex Ryan and the New York Jets for all the marbles. Sign us up.

This is one team that I'm itching to see play.
