Report: Lane Kiffin to become Alabama’s offensive coordinator

Lane Kiffin has landed another plum job.

Kiffin, the former USC and Oakland Raiders’ head coach, will be Alabama’s new offensive coordinator, Alex Scarborough of ESPN.com reported Friday.

Kiffin, 38, was fired as USC’s head coach in September. Though Southern Cal was 28-15 in his tenure, his last two teams fell short of expectations.

The Raiders were 5-15 in Kiffin’s tenure as head coach, which encompassed all of 2007 and four games in 2008. He coached the University of Tennessee for the 2009 season before moving on to USC to replace Pete Carroll, who had become the Seahawks’ head coach.

In some ways, Kiffin’s new job at Alabama is akin to his role as a top offensive assistant at USC. Alabama, like those USC teams, has an exceptional amount of talent. Moreover, Alabama’s Nick Saban, like Carroll at USC, is widely regarded as one of the sport’s top coaches.

After his latest head-coaching stint ended poorly, it would be difficult to conceive a better opportunity for Kiffin to regroup — and to perhaps jump-start his career.
