The legacy of Jim Harbaugh

Recommended Posts

Just how impressive of a job has Harbaugh done with the SF 49ers?

Harbaugh took a team that had some talent with Alex Smith at the helm and Gore in the backfield...but overall an average offense at the time. There was no Crabtree like we know him today, still an unknown...there was a Randy Moss far past his prime and there was no Mario Manningham or Patton.

An offense that lacked explosiveness, but the physicality on the offensive front was still there.

The defense, relatively the same, just matured over the years of Harbaugh and Fangino (sp)

He's taken them to the NFCCG EACH of his first 2 years as an HC being 1-1. A loss is a loss, but never has he been blown out when it's mattered most in the playoffs.

The loss to the SB champion Giants in 2011, and a loss in a highly contested second half affair with the Baltimore Ravens.

Now he's at the same place he has always been, the NFCCG. Where his team is once again, the underdog.

To me, I think this is a huge make or break moment for Jim Harbaugh's legacy as an HC, and personally I think he can do great things if he does lead his team to a title this year.

My question to all of you is, what are your thoughts on Jim Harbaugh? How great can he be?

Jim is pretty much the best coach to ever be in this league. Eat your heart out Belichick.

If he doesn't win a Super Bowl, he isn't much more than Andy Reid, is he?

Pretty much what I have thought about to myself in the past.

He's excellent, but until he wins a Super Bowl he isn't great. But still, he finally got the potential out of a franchise that was underachieving for years.

I've always said that one of the biggest qualities you need in a coach is the ability to put other great coaches on your staff. Harbaugh has that down pat, and if he can do it after a few of his coaches get poached, he certainly belongs near the top.

Losing to that shitty Baltimore team is a HUGE black eye on his 'legacy.' That Ravens team is the worst that I've seen actually win a championship. Just mediocre in every phase of the game all year and EXTREMELY lucky in the playoffs. Losing to them was nothing short of an embarrassment. He definitely has time to erase that or at least negate it but to me, your HC has to get you ready to play in the Super Bowl and the 9ers clearly were not.

From a rivals' viewpoint, I respect the hell out of Harbaugh.

That team was really a dysfunctional team until he righted the program. One could say they were about where the Rams are right now. Talented, but rudderless.

If they never win a Super Bowl, it doesn't diminish the accomplishments of him IMO. He's brought about sustained excellence to a team that hadn't had that for decades. They've been particularly snakebit by fluke bounces of the ball that has really stymied their championship opportunities. I'm not willing to discard that random bad luck.

Jim Harbaugh is by and far the best coach in the NFC, and easily has ascended to the second best coach in the league in just 3 years.

The 9ers roster is nice, but not many teams would have advanced to the NFCCG (and once to the Super Bowl) in three straight years with some honestly sub par pieces at important positions.

Their quarterback for two of these three years is a joke when it comes to throwing the ball, even if he is mobile. Their WRs had a chance to be an excellent group this year, but only one was healthy for most of the season and there's no telling if Crabtree was himself after he returned. The only consistently elite weapon that the 9ers have is Vernon Davis, and who says Kaepernick is even capable of using Davis to his full potential?

And on the defensive side of the ball, the front 7 is elite, but the secondary sure as hell isn't.

What we're talking about here is a team that has accomplished much more than most teams do with lackluster pieces at skill positions on offense and in pass defense. Not to mention the kicking game has been very inconsistent for the past two years, and the 9ers have still reached the Super Bowl and the NFCCG, and nearly won both.

Granted, without the power outage and Ngata's following injury, the 9ers don't even get back into the Super Bowl, but it's 60 minutes played for a reason.

What this 9ers team has done considering its weaknesses is astounding, especially with fucking Kaepernick throwing the ball these past two seasons.
