Confession Thread

Recommended Posts

Here's a thread where can all admit and discuss things that bother us that we might not want to admit out loud. I'll start us off with a few.

I absolutely hate all the "thank and appreciate our troops" propaganda that's all over social media over the past few years. Shut the fuck up, already. It's taken all of the meaning out of genuine expressions of gratitude for our military. Appreciating our troops has become similar to "I love you" and "I'm sorry." Only rarely is it truly sincere.

I don't watch Game of Thrones, and I haven't read the novels, either, but I intend to venture into both. At the same time, I despise that the books are now views as great literature when nearly every excerpt I've ever read was poorly written. I understand these are small snippets but people have confused "good plot" with "good writing." It's possible to have one without the other (not to mention get published with one, but not the other), as evidenced by many, many writers, including Mr. Martin.

That's all I've got for now.

George Martin can't write for shit -- I will agree with you there. It's why I haven't ventured into the books yet myself... Every time I look up a scene or something from the show to see if it was different, it baffles me. lol. He's, intellectually, stuck as a child... Which I think helps imagining and helping create a vast and expansive world... but when it comes to actually putting it onto paper -- it's not his forte.

This isn't so much a confession as I think most people know this about me, but... I just hate mass media so much. They have such an impact on the general thoughts and actions of so many people. Maybe I shouldn't be blaming the media as much as the people who blindly follow / listen to them, but... Eh.

I genuinely enjoy a lot of John Denver songs.

Just want to point out that both people who think Martin can't write haven't read the books. Kinda hypocritical there. Martin is a fantastic writer, just flat wrong on this one.

Something that pisses me off every season is the NFL's insistence on doing this whole thing with the draft. Draft grades? Really? The draft guys are constantly so sure this player is a bust, and that one isn't, and just ignore the fact that they are wrong more than half the time lol.

I've read enough to know I have little desire to keep reading. You don't have to read a book cover to cover before you get a grasp on the style or certain talents (or lack thereof) of an author. Plus, it's a matter of opinion. People of all shapes and sizes enjoy different styles of writing.

Also... Boyz II Men > John Denver.

I hate the whole draft process. I hate mock drafts. I hate the way it glorifies 5 to 10 players the entire time and doesn't give us a broader perspective on the other players who are available. It's annoying, unending, and seemingly pointless because the picks so rarely line up as most expected.

Thanatos, if you could explain why Martin is a good writer, that'd help. Having a good plot isn't enough. I don't want to sidetrack the thread too much, so I won't reply/continue the debate, but I'd like to hear your perspective on it, because we've had this discussion before but neither of us has ever really clarified our positions.

Its one thing to say "I dont enjoy his style" and another thing to say "He can't write for shit," especially when you haven't read but a little bit of the books themselves.

Not sure if you have seen it or not, but I would assume you would REALLY hate the Draft Day movie. If you want any 'real' look into the draft process, that isn't going to be it. They focus on a total of 3 players and it's a giant propaganda fest for the NFL. It's gross. I mean, I expected it to be that, but wow.

I love the draft though and everything that goes a long with it. I understand everyone's point about the draft grades but... It is usually either air time filler or if it's online or in print, a guaranteed read by most fans. Doesn't make it right, exactly... but I understand why they do it.

Its one thing to say "I dont enjoy his style" and another thing to say "He can't write for shit," especially when you haven't read but a little bit of the books themselves.

In my opinion, he can't. Why sugar coat it? I don't see much point in beating around the bush. With that said, it's merely that. My opinion. I didn't call out people who actually enjoy his writing or what have you... I agree with Bware though, there are better places for this discussion if it needs to continue. :yep:

Calling the books "50 Shades" esque is flat out, not debatably, incorrect and I will leave it at that.

Also, I hate Johnny Manziel.

It all depends on what you like. While I like the occasional point A to point B mass produced novel, I'm into more literary fiction like Tim O'Brien and Orhan Pamuk, but that's not for everybody either.

People are as sure of their writing opinions as their music opinions. It makes for good debates, but they never end because people can't change what they like.

Porn is gross. The women in them are usually disgusting and fake, or if they're pretty, just the fact that they'd consent to being videotaped while having sex turns me off

I hate Manziel as well. I like that he stood against the NCAA but he's too hollywood.

I agree, wholeheartedly. While I've seen my fair share like most people, I can't watch it regularly or I feel really shitty, and as a general rule, I try not to look at porn.

I really hate how everyone makes such a HUGE deal out of such and such gay person or such and such black person. I understand the evolving social norms and what is being accepted and I am a huge proponent of that evolution -- but I also don't feel the need to make it bigger than it needs to be. Or maybe I am just over simplifying it... I dunno.

It's hard to post an excerpt without spoilers, but here, from a certain Season 3 wedding:

A man in dark armor and a pale pink cloak spotted with blood stepped up to Robb. "Jaime Lannister sends his regards." He thrust his longsword through her son's heart, and twisted.

Robb had broken his word, but Catelyn kept hers. She tugged hard on Aegon's hair and sawed at his neck until the blade grated on bone. Blood ran hot over her fingers. His little bells were ringing, ringing, ringing, and the drum went boom doom boom

Finally, someone took the knife away from her. The tears burned like vinegar as they ran down her cheeks. Ten fierce ravens were raking her face with sharp talons and tearing off strips of flesh, leaving deep furrows that ran red with blood. She could taste it on her lips.

It hurts so much, she thought. Our children, Ned, all our sweet babes. Rickon, Bran, Arya, Sansa, Robb...Robb...please, Ned, please, make it stop hurting...The white tears and the red ones ran together until her face was torn and tattered, the face that Ned had loved. Catelyn Stark raised her hands and watched the blood run down her long fingers, over her wrists, beneath the sleeves of her gown. Slow red worms crawled along her arms and under her clothes. It tickles. That made her laugh until she screamed. "Mad," someone said, "she's lost her wits," and someone else said, "Make an end," and a hand grabbed at her scalp just as she had done with Jinglebell, and she thought No, don't cut my hair. Ned love my hair. Then the steel was at her throat, and its bite was red and cold.

See, in my opinion, and even according to everything I learned in writing classes, that is very poorly written.

I agree to an extent, JD. Absolutely.

However, in the case of Michael Sam, the injustice in how far he dropped in the draft makes me glad they made a big deal out of his sexuality and the kiss, because there's no reason his sexuality should have dropped an SEC Defensive Player of the Year down to the seventh round.

Maybe you can just chalk this up to me being a conceited ass hole, but... I feel I could write not only as well as that, but better. The flow, sentence structure, and what not just isn't special in any shape or form. With that said, George Martin does have the creative / imaginative side of writing that I will never ever have.

Did he fall simply because he was gay? Did teams sit in the war room and say, "Hey, this kid is gay, we can't take him".. Or maybe were they more afraid of the media attention, cameras, and circus that Sam will be bringing with him? Or do we not separate the two?

I mean, the guy had a documentary type series lined up with Oprah before he got drafted for goodness sakes. That doesn't scream, "I just want to be known as Michael Sam the football player" to me. Granted, that project has since been put on hold, but... Being a big supporter of Sam through this entire process, he did lose me a little on that one.

Still would have liked the Packers to pick him up though.

Actual writers > professors in writing class who try to force all people to write in the same way.

There are masterpieces that are written and if you tried to write in the same style for a class, the teacher would laugh at you.

George Martin is a good writer in the sense that simply being in the fantasy genre forces you to be able to tie up constant loose ends, differentiate characters, have multiple working narratives within a single novel, and construct a tangible world that people can actually visualize. Guys like Martin, Terry Goodkind, Brandon Sanderson--they have incredible creative minds, but Martin and Goodkind, in particular, struggle with things like sentence structure, word choice, ridiculous metaphors, etc. Robert Jordan, IIRC, was much better at all of those things.

For an example of poorly written literature I like--JK Rowling struggled with tense issues and sentence structure throughout the HP series. As she's said multiple times, due to her status in life, having the Sorcerer/Philosopher's Stone published forced her to learn how to write as she wrote the series.

We're talking about the writing, itself.

If we're talking about a style that is well written but impossible to emulate, let's talk Cormac McCarthy.

And that makes you wrong. :p

Although, admittedly I am a pretty bi polar Zeppelin fan to begin with. I will take any of their soft / chill / jazzy / blues kind of stuff any day out of the week. And that's a pretty small minority from what I can tell, anyway. Especially with so many great rock bands of the time having some really exceptional bluesy beats.
