The Johnny Manziel thread

Recommended Posts

I mentioned this in the shoutbox, but I will say it again. I love the line about Johnny not really competing with Brian as much as he is just competing with the playbook, ATM. Tells you for sure that Manziel really isn't actually looking to start anytime soon, if ever (which is great for Browns fans).

Manziel taking first team snaps.

probably a good idea, I think the worst thing they could do is let him spend all preseason tearing up second team defenses in preseason games and building up hype

I wish they would have skipped him too, so that he'd be in camp in KC.

To everyone else: lol. OMGZ HE'S DOING DRUGS!!! Who. Fucking. Cares.

Michael_Irvin_Make_Love_Hall_of_Fame_Jac

I said it on the radio show last night. Cocaine is out of your system in like 3 days so it's much easier to beat a drug test with that than it is weed. A fucking shit load of NFL players do coke. I be you over half do. Lets be real here. Think about how many people did coke on your HIGH SCHOOL TEAM with no money lol.

Having said that, Johnny could definitely be smarter about partying. You don't do it out in the open where people can see you.

lol People make it sound like this kid should be the perfect mix of Albert Einstein, Mother Theresa, and Brett Favre coming right out of A&M as an underclassman. Please stop. The Manzeil-mania hype is outdone only by the Anti-Johnny hate-wagon. Is he the first kid to ever come out of college and have a good time BEFORE training camp? More to the point, has every player who did go out to a night-club become and lol-uber-bust? Of course, these questions are rhetorical.

He's coming from a collegiate atmosphere where they ran a wing-and-a-prayer based offense. Go get 'em, Johnny. Now he's coming into a complicated NFL atmosphere with an even more complicated playbook, people are running around acting like some partying in July is the reason he hasn't developed a complete and utter mastery of said playbook. Cut it out.

Recently, Manziel has come out publicly and said that he needs to step up his dedication to playing in the NFL. How about we let the kid actually sink or swim before we assume that he's drowning.

Johnny Manziel was once again the first quarterback on the field for team drills Tuesday, but he and Brian Hoyer ended up splitting reps with the starters.

After practice, top Browns beat writer Tony Grossi wondered if "Tuesday will be regarded as the day the light went on for Johnny Manziel." Manziel completed 15-of-27 passes in 7-on-7s. It was just his second practice with a completion rate over 50 percent. Coach Mike Pettine agrees with Grossi, and said he's certainly seeing Manziel "make strides." Hoyer is expected to start the preseason opener Saturday. But Johnny Football appears to be coming for him.

This man is a got damn HoFer.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Browns will start Brian Hoyer in their second preseason game against the Redskins on Monday.

The Browns have since confirmed. NFL Network originally reported that Johnny Manziel would get the start. It's somewhat irrelevant, as coach Mike Pettine has insisted both quarterbacks will get run with the first-team offense. Manziel was limited to time with the 2s and 3s in Cleveland's preseason opener. The Browns are making Johnny Football jump through every hoop in his quest to earn the starting job, but he's been on point thus far.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Johnny Manziel was late to a team meeting on Monday.

Mort is under the impression Manziel and a few other Browns rookies simply "misread the schedule," but it's believed Johnny Football was fined. Adam Schefter reported Thursday night that there "seems to be a feeling within the organization that Brian Hoyer wins" the Browns' starting job "in the event of a tie." Schefter believes Cleveland's second preseason game will essentially decide the battle, because all along the plan has been to pick a starter before the third exhibition game. There are no indications that Manziel's tardiness will play a role in coach Mike Pettine's quarterback decision.

Johnny Manziel was caught on camera giving the Redskins' bench the middle finger during Monday night's preseason game.

Following a third-quarter incompletion, Manziel flipped the bird and it immediately spread all over Twitter. Manziel said he had "words exchanged" with the Redskins all night, and CB Joe Haden defended the rookie quarterback, saying he'd taken a lot of abuse from the Washington players and fans Monday. According to Redskins FS Ryan Clark, what set Manziel off was the Redskins players telling Manziel that "this isn't college anymore, we're faster than you." Still, Manziel needs to keep his composure. It didn't sit well with coach Mike Pettine, and certainly isn't going to win Manziel any points in the quarterback derby. "You have to be able to maintain your poise," Pettine said.

Per Rotoworld.com:

The Browns named Brian Hoyer their Week 1 starter.
"He was the clear leader from the beginning. We've maintained all along that if it was close, I would prefer to go with the more experienced player," explained coach Mike Pettine. Johnny Manziel was unable to close the gap, starting with off-field distractions during OTA season and culminating with a pair of uninspiring preseason performances. Hoyer, who will turn 29 in October and is coming off an ACL tear, will now serve as a bridge starter until the Browns deem Manziel ready. We suspect that will come as soon Week 5, as Cleveland faces Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Baltimore before its Week 4 bye. Hoyer will be a decided underdog in each of those games. Aug 20 - 8:18 AM
_______________
Johnny Manziel is struggling -- and continues to struggle -- with the Browns' playbook.
We all got a glimpse of it when Manziel was asked by Jon Gruden in a sit-down interview during Monday night's telecast to spit out a play from OC Kyle Shanahan's playbook. He stumbled over his words before eventually getting it out. It's to be expected from a rookie like Manziel, who is coming from a spread offense with simple, one-, two-, or three-word plays. Receiver Andrew Hawkins admitted the players in the huddle "are still helping him a little bit." Manziel can focus on the playbook as Brian Hoyer's backup. It's going to take time. Aug 20 - 2:17 PM

They did the right thing here. Especially if he hasn't got the playbook down yet. As the leader of the football team, you can't be going into the huddle and asking your teammates for help, that's a no brainer there.

Gonna be a big bridge starter. Hope Manziel can wait 5 years.

Manziel will be the starter by years end if the Browns aren't in contention, which I don't feel like they will be this year.

I really hope you're right, if the Skins got to him I'd love to see how he reacts to Pollard

Johnny Manziel hasn’t played in an NFL game yet, but he already leads the league in trademarks.

Manziel has filed for a trademark to the term “Johnny Cleveland,” according to ESPN. That makes 10 trademarks that Manziel’s company, JMan2 Enterprises LLC, has filed with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.

Manziel’s other trademarks include “Johnny Football,” “JFF,” “ManzIIiel” and “The House That Johnny Built,” the latter a reference to the renovated stadium at Texas A&M.

People other than Manziel have attempted to trademark terms including “Johnny Browns” and “Money Manziel” but have been denied, as a name identifying a living person cannot be registered as a trademark without that person’s consent.

Spending all this money to conquer all these trademarks...Maybe he should save his money, afterall, he won't be making any in a few years when he's no longer in the league!

Per Rotoworld.com:

ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi reports that internal pressure to play Johnny Manziel has "turned up considerably."
Brian Hoyer is coming off a highly-unproductive loss to the Jaguars, leading the Browns to briefly consider going to Manziel in the second half. Hoyer has been mostly solid managing Kyle Shanahan's offense prior to last week, but his leash on the starting job is now in question. It could be only a matter of time before the Browns turn to Manziel. Hoyer is in danger of getting benched if he can't move the offense against the winless Raiders. Oct 25 - 6:58 PM
