Preseason Reaction Thread

I think Teddy's game was good as a confidence booster. That's all I have to say on this. Not gonna buy into Teddy already being our franchise guy because of a preseason game.

I would do anything to make sure Ponder never fields for us as a starter again...

... anything...

Really? I'm sorry, but last year Christian Ponder was far from our biggest problem. First of all, the defense was a complete joke. Bill Musgrave can't call plays. The offensive line, particularly the guards, use Ponder's athleticism as an excuse to not block. Greg Jennings was being a little bitch (imagine that). And then you have Leslie Frazier, who's soft as Charmin about everything and had no business being a head coach in this league. The Tony Dungy approach only works if you have fantastic rosters.

With this coaching staff, Ponder would be better than Cassel.

Ponder is horrible and not even a short term answer. I don't think Matt Cassel is either. I think I even said on here once that I would probably give up watching the Vikings if they decided that they would try to go forward with Cassel without drafting a QB in the first round. I just feel more comfortable with Cassel, even if that means I feel more comfortable with a 5-6 win season at best.

Ponder helped deliver 10 wins and a playoff birth with a lesser roster (not to mention coaching staff) than this. Yes, he had his stretch of horrible games mid-season but early on and especially at the end of that season, he was just fine.

I doubt, seriously doubt, that they could win 10 with him but I'd rather shoot for 8-10 with Ponder than 4-6 with Cassel.

Or, why not start Teddy and accept 5 wins at worst but maybe 11 if he's good? This roster is very very solid, though I'm less than enthused about Captain Munnerlyn. I hope they don't use him too much when he can't even tackle. Dude got embarrassed multiple times last night. By rookies.

The Panthers secondary from last year freaking robbed every team they went to. None of them are as good as people think they are. They were all made to look good by that front 7.

Yeah, I knew that, and was irritated by their signing of him, but then they signed someone even worse in Kurt Coleman.

Is Munnerlyn really this bad of a tackler or is he just taking it easy because it's preseason?

Munnerlyn is awful, IMO. Always got beat deep by good WRs and people just ran over him.

Yeah, fuck the 49ers!

Winning in preseason at least sort of feels good. Blaine Gabbert is still terrible.

Kansas City might just have a pornstar sized mega-bust in the making in Eric Fisher.

Now that's funny!

I thought it was a head scratcher to take Fisher. Taking a tackle at #1 overall kind of requires a really dominant prospect -- not a all-star game/Combine wonder.

Although it worked out for you guys with Poe. So win some/lose some I suppose.

For as much as the Chargers looked deeper and stronger than the Cowboys in week one, they looked shallower and weaker than the Seahawks in week two. Sort of to be expected. A few notes of interest...

I found it really odd that the refs didn't throw a flag on a pretty obvious penalty that stalled the only drive our starters were in for on offense. Not that I'm going to whine about a call not going my way in preseason, but the Seahawks are presumably the whole reason why there's this new BS emphasis on defensive holding, DPI, and illegal contact. So you would think that after throwing a ticky tack flag at Brandon Flowers that essentially gave SEA their first touchdown, they would then throw a flag on a much more obvious infraction when we had the ball. But I guess there's no rhyme nor reason to this crap that the league is handing down to officials.

I think that the pass defense will be very much improved this season. Our DB's look reliable on the whole. Flowers got flagged in the endzone, but it was good coverage and I was glad to see him looking comfortable out there. Melvin Ingram and Corey Liuget were getting after it, creating pressure and flushing Wilson. Later in the game, I saw some nice pressures out of Tourek Williams and Jerry Attaochu. And when we get to week one, Jason Verrett and Dwight Freeney will be ready to throw into the mix. There were some breakdowns among the "starting unit" on the 2nd and 3rd Seattle drives, but Eric Weddle was gone after the first one and he's the dude back there to hold things together. All that said...

At this point I have no idea why an opposing team would do anything but run against us. Kendall Reyes still spends most of his time getting washed like he isn't even there, and tackling is highly suspect. There were also some bad assignment problems out of youngsters like Tourek. I won't be shocked to see Reyes get demoted to sub package rusher this year. And hopefully the tackling sorts itself out. Players don't go to the ground in Mike McCoy training camps, so it's at least conceivable that all the team needs is the remaining preseason games to get back into the habit of wrapping and tackling. I'm also guessing that the Chargers' FO is closely monitoring the waiver wire for DL help.

Johnnie Troutman looked much improved in his second week playing RG for us. Chris Watt also looked good at RG in his first ever game action-- not so sure about him at center. The biggest liability was actually Fluker, who really struggled with Avril's speed on the edge. Which is exactly the type of matchup that you expect Daniel Lee Jesus to struggle with. One really underrated part of Rivers' game is his ability to deal with pressure in the pocket. He makes D.J. look better than what he is. So when Kellen Clemens was in, the problems off the right side were more noticeable. Speaking of Kellen...

The dude can play. I haven't seen this kind of backup QB play in San Diego since the early Billy Volek era.

I'm excited to see how our starters measure up against Seattle's in week 2. I hope they have a good game plan to deal with Wilson's mobility, as that killed. I'm glad we get them at home.

:Falcons: @ :Texans:

The rookies really stepped up. Clowney, Fiedorowicz, Blue, Hal, Denham, Bullough, and Labhart all made some big plays.

Fitzpatrick looked solid. He nicely executed a two-minute drill leading to a TD pass to Posey.

Savage looked a bit erratic. He was unknowingly thrown in the game before Keenum, so I'm sure he had some nerves. He still has a long way to go in his development.

Keenum was Keenum. Moments of brilliance mixed in with forced throws into double/triple coverage and staring his receivers down.

Special teams was about as good as it gets. Coverage team was amazing and add in a blocked field goal and punt.

Grimes has basically solidified his position as back up to Arian, but Blue is really not that far behind him.

Boswell missing two PATs is no bueno. He won't beat Bullock for the kicking job.

That play was bogus (the Flowers PI). Even afterwards, I heard that Baldwin was trying to gauge how much contact he could initiate in order to draw the penalty. Which I've seen a lot of other WRs do this preseason too. Everyone is trying to feel out the threshold and how they can manipulate the emphasis in their favor.

In essence, Baldwin slowed up to intentionally get contact and the ref threw the flag. Sadly, that is where this new emphasis is evolving.

I'm not sure I recall the play you're referring to after that call. I'm pretty sure it was worthy of a flag since the new standard for what is a penalty is still being worked out. I do know that there was an illegal contact foul called on us where a Charger receiver was clearing out on a pick play. Reminds me of the Hasselbeck illegal block below the waist call in SB XL where he was tackling a DB after an interception. There was also the Simon contact foul negating a pick six. The NFL office has already informed Seattle that those two plays were not in fact illegal and should not have been called.

You're absolutely right though. These rule emphasis changes have not fully played out. Smart players are figuring ways to flop for the call. And teams are running plays with the added element of intentionally drawing contact for free first downs. It's not taken the league very long to abuse the new paradigm to the absurd extreme.

Expect more in the coming weeks.

I can't wait to see Richard Sherman lead the league in penalties. :3

I am not looking forward to people praising Peyton Manning as a goat QB because he's gonna get 5000+ yards passing and 1000+ penalty yards from his receivers because the NFL is a whiny baby league about the worst things.

That'll be absurdly unlikely. Sherman is already amongst the craftiest CBs in the league. Definitely the most adaptable. He will find the line and toy with it like he currently does already.

This ruleset is really going to destroy poor cornerbacks. Not suppress good CBs to the level of the mediocre.

The league is a cold dead place Attyla. Richard Sherman may just become the next Benny Sapp before your eyes.

It was a 3rd & 3 on Rivers' only drive. Around midfield. He threw to Allen on the left who was locked up with Maxwell. Lots of contact both ways, but Maxwell held on while Allen tried to disengage and go after the ball. Could only get one arm out there. Not egregious, but a lot worse than what had already been called.

Like I said, I'm not really mad about it. Just found it interesting that, of all teams, it's the Seahawks that get off lucky in this heavily flagged preseason.

Gotta love how Robert Griffin shows no signs of being any better than last year, and better is all he could get.

That game was so bad I turned it off before halftime and watched "The Strain" on DVR. Which actually delivered the best episode of the entire season so far. Was kind of, "meh" about the show, but I liked this last episode a lot :yep:

lol Yeah, I was all kinds of heated when they took Fisher in the first place. That was one of the most anger-inducing pick I've ever seen. Hope for the best, but definitely prepared for the worst.

Poe is obviously the other side of the coin, but even he wasn't the first overall pick. To take... Let me stop. Pretty sure Fisher is a major contributor to the Shout Box being renamed. Ask Razor about that.

RGIII!!! Nooooooooooooooooooooooo.....

RG3!!!!! YYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS... While putting himself on a tee like this isn't really the best thing for the kid, I think it bares mentioning that him/the Skins' coaching staff going soooo far out of his/their way to avoid this sort of thing will most certainly be the undoing of an otherwise promising career. Zebras don't change stripes; Josh Gordon don't stop smoking; Tyson don't stop punching; Tommy don't stop being emo; and RG3 don't stop being RG3 if he wants to keep being RG3 and not just "That dude Robert Griffin who the (used to be the Redskins) wasted all those picks on."

I really hope Kirk Cousins looks solid. Because come 3 months from now, he may be their only option left.
