The March Begins in Ames

Recommended Posts

The North Dakota State Bison are seeking a 4th straight National Title, and they open their season this Saturday against Iowa State. If Brock Jensen were still quarterbacking this team, I'd call it a win already because he didn't make crucial mistakes. I have no idea how Carson Wentz will do on such a big stage. He's a better pure passer than Jensen, but isn't nearly as athletic. If he plays mistake free football, the Herd will be in the game. The Bison defense only suffered minimal losses and should still be as stout as ever, so I highly doubt it'll be a blowout of any kind, but here's to seeing how the Bison can start a new era. New coach. New quarterback. Let's see how it goes!

They'll definitely win a 4th straight then. Towson wasn't even close.

Lol. The Bison are gonna get laughed out of Ames. Please. Sam Richardson is gonna set records on your boys.

We shall see. They were supposed to get laughed out of Manhattan, too.

Remember, KSU went on to average close to 5 YPC for the rest of the season, last year, after starting the year with a 1.8 average against the Bison. K State had a good offensive line. By all accounts, ISU's is at least experienced, but I don't know enough about them to know if they're better or worse than K State's line of a year ago. NDSU lost very little in their front 7, and is still loaded with Bohl recruits. That defense is significantly better than the NDSU defense that came to Ames in 2009. Completely different teams. NDSU, at that time, was searching for a quarterback, juggling guys under center.

It'll be a game unless Wentz fucking blows.

Wentz looks good. He's a more natural pocket passer than Jensen was.

The two guys calling the game--Coy Wire and whoever the hell the other guy is--they're annoying. They're just blowing on NDSU's knob, constantly. There's two teams playing, here, and a very exciting quarterback in Sam Richardson. Let's hear about both teams.

I understand that this is Chris Klieman's first day as a head coach, but horrible clock management at the end of the first half, there. Just awful.

If he'd called his first timeout with about 20 or 30 seconds left, they'd have a chance at a touchdown, but instead they're setting for a FG on third down.

Bware may be a homer but he is a homer for a good team.

Props for acknowledging it. I obviously went too far last year when I stated that they could play with a lot of top 25 teams. I still maintain that they could be in a competitive game with at least some top 25 teams, mostly due to the defense that JD mentioned. They likely wouldn't win, but I don't think the separation is as drastic as people make it sound.

This team's defense is something else. Two phenomenal safeties in Christian Dudzik and Colton Heagle (both will be in training camps next summer), excellent linebackers in Carlton Littlejohn and Travis Beck (It wouldn't surprise me to see either at least get an invite), and a defensive end in Kyle Emmanuel who I think has a serious shot at being an undrafted steal.

There aren't any lock draft picks on this year's team like Billy Turner, but there are a lot of seniors who will have chances to earn roster spots in the NFL. John Crockett, for example, has the speed and shiftiness necessary to excel with the right opportunity. if you don't believe me, look at the replay of his 80 yard touchdown, today. He made a sick cut and made an ISU safety look silly, then put on the jets. Zach Vraa has good size as a receiver. I don't expect him to latch on in the NFL, but I expect him to at least look into it.

This team has every opportunity within its grasp, yet again. I, for one, want to see that NDSU/Eastern Washington rematch.

As for ISU, Sam Richardson was a lot of fun to watch, and there were injuries that affected their offense's play, today. If they aren't serious, and those guys return, there's no reason this offense can't be pretty damn good. The defense, on the other hand, is definitely a work in progress.

Glorious that the streak had to continue this season in Iowa but later on ends in Iowa. Good stuff! GO PANTHERS!

David Johnson will play on Sundays, next year. UNI is easily the second most dangerous team in the MVFC and the most dangerous to NDSU in the playoffs. If NDSU wins out, they'll be the #1 seed, so UNI would have to go to Fargo if the two matched up, at some point.

The Bison defense has not been able to recover from the loss of Travis Beck, one of the best linebackers in the country at the FCS level. Definitely the best coverage linebacker. Now they're playing two young kids who weren't ready, in his place. Lost Beck in the regular season finale and have since allowed 20+ points in two consecutive games. They're very very vulnerable.

If Coastal Carolina pulls this off, I hope they win it all. They're an extremely well coached team with a tough, shifty running back in Henderson and two very big, physical wide receivers in Israel and I don't remember #18's name off the top of my head. Their defense is fast and disciplined. Their special teams are very dangerous.

Go Bison . If they lose, congratulations to the Chanticleers (a word that essentially means "cock of the walk").

A job well done to the Bison. That was the best an opposing team has played in FargoDome in quite some time.

Bware, is ND States' punter always that good? When I was watching he seemed like an NFL caliber punter.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, because he's not playing nearly as good as usual, but it's due to injury. Based on your comment, I think you may have seen his 50+ yarder that pinned CC inside the 10. He's got a quad issue that's causing some of his kicks to sail on him. He's a directional kicking specialist who is great (when healthy) at pinning opponents in a corner on inside the 20. His kickoffs trap returners into bad lanes and his punts are incredible.

Of course, this is all when he's healthy. He still made some nice kicks, yesterday, but he's struggled with control the past two weeks.

THE UNPRECEDENTED 4PEAT!

My God, this has been incredible. 5 might be out of the question but Carson Wentz may make it possible all on his own, next year. This kid is already better than Jensen ever was. It's crazy.

so how long until NDSU moves up to FBS?

They would need to replace the FargoDome, as its capacity (19000ish) isn't enough for D1A.

Fun fact: this Bison senior class went out with more championships (4) than losses (3).

which is why they need to move up to a higher division, and here's another fun fact: three FBS teams play in stadiums that seat less than 19,000 and another ten seat 25,000 or less, the Fargodome isn't that much of a limitation, sure they'd be on the low end on stadium size, but it's doable

Maybe it's a big 10 (12?) limitation, the obvious conference for them? I dunno.

I don't think they'd jump straight to the Big 10, they'd probably have to take a couple years in something like the MWC, which would also make sense geographically
