seanbrock 1,684 Posted October 2, 2014 The Sixers under Sam Hinke have received a lot of criticism for his tanking strategy and I think it's fair. Professional sports are about money first and foremost, but they're also supposed to be about winning. What's the ultimate goal though? The ultimate goal is to win championships. In the NBA making the playoffs in the east as anything less than a 5 seed utterly meaningless. Nobody knows this better than Sixers fans. This once proud franchise has been either bad or just ok for the past 30 years . Hinke knows that the Sixers aren't the Lakers. They're not a destination for stars like they were Dr. J's hayday. Hinke knows that in order for this team to be great again, they have to be really really bad. Everybody knows aboutall the lottery picks the Sixers have collected under Hinke. They're all but guaranteed to have 5 lottery picks injust 3 years and could quite possibly end up with 6 depending on how Miami does. That's all fine and good but 2 of those 5 picks are big men with major injury histories and the other is a PG with nojump shot. To top that off most of the top players in the draft are bigs and the Sixers have plenty of talent there. What the Sixers need is a wing player that can shoot. The x-factor in all this is the 2016 free agency class and no team has put themselves in better position for this potentially league alterin group of free agents. Every player on the Sixers roster is under their control, but they're not obligated to pay any of them. Even if only one or two of these picks picks pans out they'll be able to sign whoever they want as they could afford 2 max contracts. This is a particularly perfect year to have a crap load of cap space because they have 30% of the cap which means they could pay guys like LeBron or Durant more than the teams they're on now. If it all works out the Sixers have a chance to put together an extremely deep and talented team for many years. You can't ask for more out of your GM. The rest is up to the coaching staff and the players but I feel great knowing Sam Hinke is driving the bus.
SteVo+ 3,702 Posted October 2, 2014 Everyone here knows I'm not a close NBA fan, but I agree that Hinke's strategy is sound. There can be no quick rebuilds for Philly; he's doing it the right way. It's inescapably frustrating, but anything else would just result in another rebuilding process.
Zack_of_Steel+ 3,014 Posted October 2, 2014 I want to neg you simply for suggesting that Durant would bolt for the 76ers.

DonovanMcnabb for H.O.F 2,241 Posted October 3, 2014 Yea, I don't they would ever get either. Especially Durant who if he was to ever leave OKC would probably end up in DC.

oochymp 2,393 Posted October 4, 2014 any GM whose five year plan includes sucking for three of them is worthless IMO
