Canes are a sorry bunch. Kind of like the Avalanche.

Avs were long overdue for a game like that. Good to see them actually close out a game for once. Lovin' that Iggy/Tangs Calgary connection.

Duchene was simply 'mazin.

Duchene was simply 'mazin.

He had a pretty bad scoring drought last year, so it's relieving to see him get off to a fast start this season.

Drouin and Stamkos magic

Cooper putting them together on the first line is genius both being very potent shooters as well as passers, which will keep opposing defenses constantly guessing.

Also a much-needed solid performance by the Avs, hope they can keep up the offensive surge and ride the momentum for a bit.

Still finishing with 70 points in 71 GP is outstanding. He'll always get the big assists but I wonder if Dutchy will ever be able to net 30.

Interesting article about changing the NHL: http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/id/32962/commissioner-lebruns-changes-for-nhl

Points I agree with:

-Pushing the schedule back to late September. Ending the season in June is ridiculous. It should be over by May at the latest.

-Removing the shootout. It's a gimmick, messes up the standings, and is not used in the playoffs. Extend 4 on 4 OT to 10 minutes, and restore ties. Also dump the loser point.

-Moving free agency to after the Draft.

-Removing the trapezoid. Too many defensemen are getting hurt lately, which is not a good thing.

Points I disagree with:

-Expansion. No. No no no no no no no NO NO!!! There are too many teams right now and a few of them are floundering badly financially. Relocate two teams (Arizona and Florida come to mind) to Seattle, and Hartford IMO (Quebec would be a bad plan)

-Play in game. What the fuck... why not put everyone in the playoffs?!

-Serving the full two minute penalty. Nope. There is no need to increase PP scoring at all. Besides, allowing a PPG is punishment enough.

I'd like to see an extension of OT to at least 10 minutes regardless of the shootout being removed or not (probably more likely of extending OT with the removal of the SO).

It used to be ten minute OTs back in the 1940's before it was removed entirely due to WW II restrictions. Not sure why the NHL didn't go back to it initially when it returned in the 1980's.

People suggest endless regular season OT, but that's not a viable option.

We'll probably never see endless OT in the regular season, just in the playoffs which is more than fine.

Exactly. Travel schedules would make it nearly impossible, plus the injury factor as well. And ties were OK for 80 years. There was no need to remove them.

Varlamov makes 49/51 saves through 65 minutes. Ridiculous both good and bad. Shootout loss though. Niemi was damn good himself. Great game to watch. The team was winning these games last season.

Awesome. Nose broken and all. Islanders @ Avalanche tonight. Be amazed if the Avs held them to 2 goals.

Just got back from the Flyers/Panthers game. What an awful performance by Philly. One of the worst Flyers games I've ever seen. We suck. No playoffs for us this year. Get a coach who's not a former Flyers player and let Hextall work his stuff with some cap flexibility.
