I think only Scale The Summit is actually prog, and they're all pretty much instrumental acts, but they've got some interesting stuff musically, IMO.
RazorStar 4,025 Posted December 7, 2015 If you want progressive metal, Dream Theater is an oldie but a goodie. They have a lot of good albums, Awake would probably be my favourite, but there are a lot of great albums. Metropolis Pt2, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Octavarium, Images and Words, all classics in their own right. For some newer stuff, I enjoyed Haken's last album, The Mountain. Beardfish has some great ones as well, Sleeping in Traffic and Comfortzone are absolute eargasms, and the band I actually keep coming back to is Moon Safari. Their music sounds so happy and chill, but their songs are actually anything but which is just a great contrast. I have more suggestions, but let's just leave it at that for now. so tl;dr: Dream Theater, Haken, Beardfish, Moon Safari.
OSUViking 505 Posted December 8, 2015 I don't expect any of you guys to enjoy The Weeknd, but I love his stuff. I don't like his new album, but I thoroughly enjoyed Kiss Land and all the mix tapes on Trilogy.

I don't like his new album, but I thoroughly enjoyed Kiss Land and all the mix tapes on Trilogy. I liked some songs on the House of Balloons tape, What You Need especially You ever got into Toro y Moi? He's not similar to The Weeknd really other than the fact that they're not classically good singers. He does most of the instruments and production and early on cut/dug for the samples etc. Really talented dude. The music is more funky, dance at times. He switches styles and genres though so it's hard to pin it down he's got lots of influences. Should check him out.

Images and Words is good too, that first song man...is so good they couldn't figure out how to end it. Moon Safari....I can dig it.Not really my genre as they are a little too soft for me. Lover's End was iffy for me. Air was damn good though. Great music to sit back and chill to.

Maybe I'm just hearing stuff, but I think House of Balloons is a lot deeper than just drugs, sex, and partying. I hear a dude struggling with addiction/numbness and turning to all these things to try and power through them, but also trying to bring people down to his level (i.e., House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls, What You Need, High For This, and a few others). I could go into a more intricate explanation but I've like thought out my own plot for HoB.

Very interesting song, probably my favorite DT song so far. Scarred & Pull me Under...great too. Maybe I'll do that with Zeppelin... Still waiting.... RazorStar 4,025 Posted December 24, 2015 I have not, but I would agree that it is definitely my favourite DT song. Apparently it's not a popular choice heh heh heh.

Vin+ 3,121 Posted February 3, 2016 So Cowboys From Hell came on the other day, and it got me thinking, would greatest rock/metal intro be viable for a music tourney? Figure it's gonna be time for another one since we skipped last year.
Zack_of_Steel+ 3,014 Posted February 3, 2016 Did we already do a lyricism tourney?
BwareDWare94 723 Posted February 3, 2016 What about composition in general for a tourney, bug spanning all genres? Best singer/songwriter tourney?

Zack_of_Steel+ 3,014 Posted January 26, 2017 (edited) Santigold has quietly become one of my absolute favorite artists. Her lyrics alone do it for me, but the hip hop/reggae/indie style is on point. If anyone wants her discography I'd be happy to upload it. Her best two singles and two of my favorite songs (I highly encourage reading the lyrics): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIMMZQJ1H6E Lyrics: [Verse 1] Don't look ahead, there's stormy weather Another roadblock in our way But if we go, we go together Our hands are tied here if we stay Oh, we set our dreams to carry us If they don't fly we will run Now we push right past to find out On how to win what they have lost [Hook] Oh ah, oh ah We know now we want more Oh ah, oh ah A life worth fighting for Oh ah, oh ah We know now we want more Oh ah, oh ah A life worth fighting for So let them say we can't do better Lay out the rules that we can't break They wanna sit and watch you wither Their legacy's too hard to take Oh, we set our dreams to carry us In the middle where we were one Now we push right past to find out On how to win what they have lost [Hook] Oh ah, oh ah We know now we want more Oh ah, oh ah A life worth fighting for Oh ah, oh ah We know now we want more Oh ah, oh ah A life worth fighting for In their heads, hedging their bets In their eyes it shows When the beacon breaks for them You ask and they don't know Oh tell me then I turn my back while the odds all stand beneath me And they all said I was misled But now the odds all stand beneath me [Hook] Oh ah, oh ah We know now we want more Oh ah, oh ah A life worth fighting for Oh, we set our dreams to carry us If they dont fly we will run Now we push right past to find out On how to win what they have lost [Hook] Oh ah, oh ah We know now we want more Oh ah, oh ah A life worth fighting for Oh ah, oh ah We know now we want more Oh ah, oh ah A life worth fighting for You were wrong, let me here what you say Now here we come, can't stop, nothing in the way You were wrong, let me here what you say Now here we come, can't stop, nothing in the way https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8xS1FqQzjQ Lyrics: [Verse 1] 360, five left, I'm counting it to the day I'm thinking if I did everything I've said or if the year got the best of me One thing about time, it waits for nobody, you told me, isn't that what they say Been batting 'gainst it and getting nowhere Just racin' got nothin' to say to nobody Little lady, you better get in line, now I'm talking this to myself Better get in on down with the program, don't sell your lot for an old broke dream they been sellin' ya Free fallin' like T*m Petty waitin' on his rodeo too haul I break my own rules, steal my way home and guard the still there like a beast [Chorus] We race the globe The shakers and the fools We trouble, you know You'll find us where we fall, we chasing shadows We race the globe (And I can't have it, have it any other way) The shakers and the fools (And I can't have it, have it any other way) We trouble, you know (I'm not gon' have it, have it any other way) You'll find us where we fall, we chasing shadows (And I can't have it, have it any other way) [Post-Chorus] Always knew I'd be international, no fear of flyin' Limousines, big people, their parties, but I'm on an island Watching through a window, the flashing light on the bed Neon sign goes red "You are here" it says Well, at least someone knows where I am [Verse 2] Maybe I will get it wrong, no patience for myself Selling years of ideas 'til I'm old, a living on the shelf I won't follow, I'm taking the long way, my standards hold me up Why they eating they idols up? Now, why they eatin' they idols up? Damnit I give 'em my heart in words, will they remember me? I'll leave 'em alone and time'll want to smother what I say I round another year and wonder did I go someplace I'm bucking this one down, this one right here won't walk away [Chorus] We race the globe The shakers and the fools We trouble, you know You'll find us where we fall, we chasing shadows We race the globe (And I can't have it, have it any other way) The shakers and the fools (And I can't have it, have it any other way) We trouble, you know (I'm not gon' have it, have it any other way) You'll find us where we fall, we chasing shadows (And I can't have it, have it any other way) [Post-Chorus] Always knew I'd be international, no fear of flyin' Limousines, big people, their parties, but I'm on an island Watching through a window, the flashing light on the bed Neon sign goes red "You are here" it says Well, at least someone knows where I am [Outro] "You are here" it says Well, at least someone knows where I am Edited January 26, 2017 by Zack_of_Steel
