Review Your Teams' 2014 Draft

Recommended Posts

So all of the leagues rookies have had a year or so to show what they have. Obviously we won't know what this draft class is fully capable of for another year or two, but given the glimpse that we have... Take your teams draft from a year ago (not even) and let us know what you think about it now, maybe compare it to what you thought at the time, or talk about what you see for the future!

I will get mine up here shortly.

1.1 - OLB Jadeveon Clowney

-Lots of injuries, microfacture surgery, could very well end up being a colossal bust.

2.33 - OG Xavier Su'a-Filo

-Failed to play much at all, injuries put him on IR. There's potential. That's all.

3.64 - TE C.J. Fiedorowicz

-Didn't really accomplish much as a pass catcher. Hopefully he makes a jump in his sophomore year.

3.83 - NT Louis Nix III

-O'Brien called him out for having immaturity issues when it comes to being a pro. Stashed on IR. Not much to say.

4.135 - QB Tom Savage

-In his one moment of play time he looked completely overwhelmed. Simply a project.

6.177 - DE Jeoffrey Pagan

-Played in rotation. 2 gapper with limited upside.

6.181 - RB Alfred Blue

-Worked his way up to being Arian's backup. He's nothing special as a runner, but does contribute on special teams as well. Easily the most productive rookie.

6.211 - FB Jay Prosch

-He's a decent fullback.

7.216 - CB Andre Hal

-Looked okay as a reserve corner. There's certainly upside in his game.

7.256 - S Lonnie Ballentine

-Freak athlete measurables. Needs to develop his game before he will ever see the field. Stashed on IR.

Overall grade: D-

1.21 - S HaHa Clinton-Dix
I have said this about him multiple times throughout the season, so it won't come as much of a surprise for many of you. I wasn't high on the pick initially, thought it was pretty blah, to be honest. However, the kid has skills, and he has gotten better and better as the year has gone on and he has earned more playing time. He is still REALLY young, I think he JUST turned 22, and the potential is crazy. He has made his share of mistakes, but I know he can correct those in time.

2.53 - WR Davante Adams
It's been an up and down year for Adams. He came in pretty hot, supplanted Jarrett Boykin for the #3 WR spot, but didn't play a big factor in early on the year. He caught on a little in the middle of the year, looked promising... Then dropped off again and Aaron Rodgers even made a comment about him maybe hitting a bit of a wall. Looks like a talented kid who will continue to develop... Still doesn't mean I am comfortable losing Randall Cobb to FA this year.

3.85 - DT Khyri Thornton

Has a good attitude and showed a few flashes in training camp, but never took full advantage of opportunities put before him. Got hurt and we immediately stashed him on IR. He has some upside, but he has some work to do. Well, a lot of work.

3.98 - TE Richard Rodgers
Another guy who has gotten better as the year moves along. Looks to be a solid guy in pass pro, which is a big positive. Mike McCarthy and the staff have really limited his workload as a pass catcher, which kind of saddens me. When he does get his chances, he looks very open -- I just feel he is always way down in Aaron's progressions. Nice, solid routes.. I think he could be here for quite a few years as a serviceable threat. Probably not on Jermichael Finley's level (even as mediocre as he was), but more than good enough, IMO.

4.121 - OLB Carl Bradford
Maybe the worst pick of our draft. I watched tape on this guy for our TGP Mock Draft and knew he would never play OLB in this league, not for the Packers anyway (who I was scouting him for). I did think he could be a solid ILB though.. Low and behold, the Packers draft him and actually plays him at OLB. He looked HORRENDOUS in camp.. slow, confused, and beaten on almost every play. He was totally out of his element, and honestly didn't play well enough to even earn a roster spot. However, as a 4th round pick, Ted wasn't going to give up on him before his rookie season even started. Packers moved him to ILB last second and have just stowed him away on the inactive list every week as part of the 53 man roster.

5.161 - C Corey Linsley
Has played well from the very beginning. JC Tretter was supposed to be the next in line player at C, but got hurt and Corey had to step in last minute Week 1. He has been pretty fantastic for a rookie C. I can't complain at all. We have had a new center every year for like.. 4 years now, but Linsley will be the C of this team for probably the next decade, barring something really unfortunate. Awesome value in the 5th round.

5.176 - WR Jared Abbrederis

Showed some flashes of really good hands in camp, then tore his ACL. Dunno what his future will be like, honestly. Especially with a guy coming up...Really unfortunate, because he could have been a steal at this slot.

6.197 - CB Demetri Goodson

Not gonna lie, guy looked pretty bad right after the draft, but I think the Packers expected that to a degree. He was meant as a project from the beginning and remains that way. Packers lost the opportunity to develop Jumall Rolle, who I really liked, and they usually have a good eye for CBs later in the draft. I will trust them on this, but so far he has been relegated to ST duty. I expect more of him in the future, especially if we lose both Tramon and Davon House to FA this upcoming year.

7.236 - WR Jeff Janis

Has some speed to his game, great YAC potential, fantastic hands... Has been inactive most of the year, but could make a big splash with more opportunities. Looks like Jordy Jr. to me, which is more than what I expected from a 7th round WR and heading into the season a fringe roster player and like a WR 6/7 on this roster.

Overall Grade: A
This draft looks full of young talent who will be contributing for this team for many many years. There is still a lot of developing and learning that must happen, but the talent is there to be something special. Looking at the last one or two Packer drafts, I was almost afraid Ted had lost his touch. This draft proves that he still has it. The failure to get an impact ILB hurt this draft, as it was and continues to be this teams biggest need.

Jimmie Ward, DB - Typical rookie DB struggles, time will tell if he can put it together.

Carlos Hyde, RB - This pick looks even better know that Marcus Lattimore is done playing football. Power runner, who had some flashes.

Marcus Martin, C - This kid is really young and didn't really perform well while having to step in due to injury.

Chris Borland, ILB - Some outstanding games mixed with a few duds. More good than bad. He's a keeper.

Brandon Thomas, G - Recovering. Maybe a replacement at Guard one of these days.

Bruce Ellington, WR - Didn't have a chance to display on offense, good returner on Special Teams.

Dontae Johnson, CB - Might be the best corner on the team right now. That's how good he played.

Aaron Lynch, OLB - Played very well and is already better than Ahmad Brooks. Awesome pick.

Keith Reaser, CB - NA

Kenneth Acker, CB - NA

Kaleb Ramsey, DE - NA

Trey Milliard, FB - NA

Grade: B, potential A.

1. CB Bradley Roby - 65 tackles, 13 pass def, 2 ints and 2 ff, I can't imagine a rookie corner having a better first year in this era of football. He's had some 'oops' moments but nothing that isn't correctable, and his willingness in the run game is nice. He's aggressive as hell and likes to hit. I really feel he should at least get a mention in the droy talks.

2. WR Cody Latimer - Couldn't beat out Andre Caldwell for the majority of the year. He had a nice catch in week 17.

3. T Michal Schofield - I think he subbed in at T once or twice this year, and it was bad.

4. ILB Lamin Barrow - Played really well on special teams all year. Still has an abundance of MLB potential, but needs to get bigger.

5. C Matt Paradis - Didn't play at C all year. Looked rough in pre-season.

6. LB Corey Nelson - He played a good bit of sub OLB this year with all our injuries, and really didn't look that bad. Made some decent special teams impact as well.

Overall grade: B-

DOn't wanna burst any bubbles but...

53 tackles, 12 passes defensed, 6 INT, 1 FF, passer rating of 31 into his coverage (Roby - 99.7)

I guess Roby is... OK. Hehe. ;) Just messing with ya of course. Kinda.

Darqueze Dennard - Favorite CB of draft. Yet to get action. Kirkpatrick syndrome?

Jeremy Hill - :megusta:

Russell Bodine - Not the greatest but he won the starter spot.

Will Clarke - Ain't done shit. :sigh:

AJ McCareless - backup. Nuff said.

Marquis Flowers - Nothing special but he looked okay in the reps he got.

James Wright - Surprisingly effective. Was unsure after seeing that he caught zero passes his last season at LSU. Then he came in and played a role when AJ and Jones were hurt. Special teams guy for years to come.

1. Kelvin Benjamin

The sole knocks I have against Benji are that he drops a lot of passes and he seems to quit running on some routes. Overall, he's been a solid addition, and having a rookie WR break the 1,000 yard mark is rare as well. Should be good for years to come, possibly great.

2. Kony Ealy

Has come on strong in the latter half of the season and with Greg Hardy likely being done, we're going to need him. A very good pick looking back on it.

3. Trai Turner

Pretty poor showing overall, has been replaced by Andrew Norwell, an undrafted free agent, who has outperformed him on every level.

4. Tre Boston

Once he was inserted as the starter he took off, highlighted by his 84-yard pick six that dropped the final nail in Atlanta's coffin last week. A solid young player and great value in the 4th round.

5. Bene Benwikere

Has become one of our starting CBs along with Josh Norman and is shining in the role. May end up being the best pick overall.

6. Tyler Gaffney

Gaffney tore the meniscus in his leg and was subsequently released by the Panthers. Pretty much a bust for us at least.

1st rounder. Dominique Easley DT. Tore both his ACLs in college, did nothing his 1st year in the NFL and got put on IR a few weeks ago. So not promising. We'll see though.

2nd rounder. Jimmy Garoppolo QB. Still hate this pick.

3rd rounder. Bryan Stork OC. Great pick, he's been the starting Center for us all year and stabilized our offensive line.

4th. James White RB. No idea.

4th. Cameron Fleming OL. Good pick for a 4th rounder. Used as a rotation offensive lineman on running downs.

Overall: D/D-, still way too early to judge though cause this grade mostly depends on if Easley is good or not. I'm assuming right now that he's gonna be a bust. But I'd say a few more drafts like this and we're gonna be in decline very soon.

For Seattle, you really need to factor in trade activity. We are a team that is notorious for trading back:

1.32 (Traded for 2.40, 4.108)

2.40 (Traded with 5.146 for 2.45, 4.111, 7.227)

2.45 Paul Richardson - PR started off slightly used. Early in training camp, it appeared he would be leveraged as a fly partner for Harvin working underneath. That never materialized as Richardson and Harvin really kind of occupied the same position/role on the field. While the knock on Richardson was that he was simply a go route specialist without the physical makeup necessary to hold up to the rigors of the NFL, the reality has been, that Richardson is incredibly talented at route running and is one of the most reliable receivers on the team in terms of winning 50-50 balls. He has also taken the KR duties vacated when Harvin was traded. He is really on the cusp of becoming Wilson's go to receiver as he has an innate ability to make his QB look good.

2.32 Justin Britt - Day one starter at RT. Has struggled to be consistent in pass pro. It's not why he was drafted. He is an accomplished run blocker and paired with our RG JR Sweezy -- forms a great right side run option. Seattle runs behind their right side predominantly this year and it's due in large part because of Britt. He gets a boat load of criticism for his pass protection and I'm more convinced it's due to sluggishness in recognizing assignments than anything else.

Overall, he is considerably better than any of the OTs taken in the late 2nd through the 3rd round. He's pretty close to Ju'waun James in terms of quality and he was taken mid round 1. I wasn't thrilled by this pick but he's developed well and should continue to do so nicely. He could be moved inside if we lose Carpenter to UFA.

3.96 (Traded 2013 for Percy Harvin)

4.108 Cassius Marsh - Very solid contributor early on. Placed on IR mid season but was a regular fixture in our DL rotation and specifically in our pass rush package. With the emergence of Jordan Hill this year, Seattle will be completely set with a 5 deep pass rush package. He is slight of build but has incredible hand skills akin to Aaron Donald. At this stage I would already put him in the same class of players like Nick Perry and Datone Jones. He generally could get a couple QB pressures every game from the inside and had 2 sacks nullified by penalty in just a handful of games.

4.111 (Traded for 4.123, 6.199)

4.123 Kevin Norwood - Shined early on in camp, but suffered a significant injury in the first week. Seattle kept him on the final cutdown despite only having practiced 4 days. Active for the last half of the season and has shined at times. Definitely a clutch receiver with great ball skills. Am incredibly bullish on both Norwood and Richardson next year as they get another year more familiar with Wilson. He already shows no hesitation to throw to either rookie.

4.132 Kevin Pierre-Louis - factored in early with our LB depth. Incredible speed. Coming into the league, I was critical of his physicality and his inclination to avoid contact or run around it. But Seattle was able to get him to shed that very quickly and his speed/length combination has turned him into a very respectable tackler at the NFL level. Pretty much typical Seahawks LB with right around 4.50 speed. Sustained a rather minor injury late in the year, but Seattle elected to IR him. His play along with Irvin relegated Malcolm Smith to 5th-6th on the depth chart. I suspect we IRed him to feature Smith more in his UFA year. Will be a key depth/ST contributor with the extension of KJ Wright and the expected extension of Irvin.

5.172 Jimmy Staten - PS guy. Hasn't been able to crack the active squad.

6.199 Garrett Scott - Was thrilled with this pick at the time. Seattle discovered a congenital heart condition on his physical after drafting him. He's not practiced at all and his medical condition may never allow him to play. Seattle did sign him despite knowing he'd never play this year thus guaranteeing him his signing bonus. Scott is still with the team in some capacity (I'm not sure exactly but he is present with the coaching staff at practices).

If he does resolve his heart health issues, he looks like a very good OT prospect.

6.208 Eric Pinkins - IRed at the beginning of the season. A typical long/rangy CB prospect to groom.

7.227 Kiero Small - Solid fullback prospect. Was brought in as competition for Derrick Coleman and made a strong case to be retained. Was signed away by Cleveland on cutdown and when Coleman went on IR this season, Cleveland signed him to their active squad within hours to keep Seattle from signing him. He is more than a camp body but is still a potential prospect.

7.247 (Traded for Terrelle Pryor)

I did a review on the class early in the year. Now looking at the class, I think it's more impressive than I gave it credit for. Mainly, the development of Britt over the year, and the escalating/rapid development of Richardson are making this class really solid. 5 players making a super bowl contending roster, despite picking last in every round and not having a 3rd round pick. That's a good return.

End of year grade: B+

:Falcons:

1. OT Jake Matthews - Was pretty sold on Matthews when the Falcons first got him. Did very well all year long minus the 4 week span he played through an ankle injury. The abrupt switch from RT to LT concerned me, but he held his own ground. Did a great job in the passing game and more specifically the screen game. Gonna be a good one.

2. DT Rashede Hageman - Wish we would've played him more. He has some downright nasty strength. He's quicker than most people give him credit for as well. He's young and he got destroyed a few times..but what rookie doesn't? Hope to see him used more next year.

3. S Dez Southward - Struggled with injuries for most of the year, but when he did get playing time he looked decent. Nothing spectacular, gets a little lost in coverage, but he seems like a decent pick as well.

4. RB Devonta Freeman - Sat 4th string until Antone Smith and S-Jax got hurt. Stuggled mightily early in pass protection, but by season's end he looked very good. His vision and burst after he hits the hole is incredible. The second best back on our team behind Antone. Once again, poorly/not used enough. Potential is there, he improved every game.

5. ILB Prince Shembo - Wasn't a fan of the pick, except he held his ground. Solid player in space and good against the run.

All other rookies unamuse me and lacked sincere production for the Falcons due to injury.

Mike Evans - The 2nd best rookie WR in one of the best rookie WR classes to come out in a long time, behind ODB of course.

ASJ was a disappointment, didn't really see enough of Charles Sims but what we did see wasn't very good outside of a couple runs. No one else we drafted played much if at all.

1(1st round). Taylor Lewan - Got hurt, but during his stretch of play was far and away the best OT from the draft and has a bright future.

2(2nd round). Bishop Sankey - Pretty underwhelming overall, but in his defense, with all of the injuries on the o-line, it's hard to expect a ton out of a rookie RB.

3(4th round). DaQuan Jones - Played very little through most of the season, but had some solid play in the final game of the season vs the Colts.

4(4th round). Marqueston Huff - Played a decent amount with all of the injuries we had in the secondary and played decently. Should be solid depth/a good spot starter going forward.

5(5th round). Avery Williamson - An absolute steal in the 5th round, came in and played extremely well after an injury to Zach Brown in week 1 and less than stellar play by Gooden. Will be our starter at ILB for a long time to come, I would imagine.

6(6th round). Zach Mettenberger - Had his ups and had his downs. Struck with the same issues as Sankey with no real help from an injured offensive line, and we also had some health issues at WR down the stretch. Will likely be our starter next year.

Overall Grade: B

Teddy Bridgewater and Anthony Barr. Nuff said. We got two potential future stars in the first round.

Jerrick McKinnon played some starter quality quality football behind THAT offensive line. He's a keeper.

Don't remember much of the rest of the draft. I've heard Exum is being groomed to compete with Blanton, but outside of that I think him and Price have been depth and ST players. Exum had stupid ST penalties, but those improved over the year. Haven't heard much about Scott Chrichton and Kendall James. Almost forgot about Shamar Stephen, who had a solid year. David Yankey hasn't made the active roster yet (I think) and Brandon Watts is probably a depth player.

Considering we got two potential future starters, one a quality starter (with potential to grow into a staple back) and the other two the potential to be franchise stars, I'd give us an A-.

I would like to see Exum compete with Blanton, mostly because when Blanton fucks up, he fucks up hard. At the same time, I think I heard Blanton was grading out as one of the better safeties in the league. He had some early struggles, but once he got comfortable he was a completely different player.

1) Blake Bortles — is who we thought he was. He's a project. Didn't like taking him 3rd overall and still don't. He does have the potential and he's shown flashes but needs an offseason of work on his mechanics and as his teammates gain experience with him he'll be better off because a bunch of rookies working together was a recipe for disaster on offense.

2a) Marqise Lee — wasn't a fan of this pick either. His issues with drops in college followed him to the next level. However so did his big play potential. He came on strong late in the year after A-Rob got IR'd stepping in but had a nightmare game in week 17. He's always gonna be this way I think. A big play waiting to happen as well as a big drop waiting to happen.

2b) Allen Robinson — he's gonna be a good one. He was used incorrectly by Jedd Fisch most of the year IMO and hopefully whoever the new OC is gives him routes that let his big play ability shine. Fisch basically had him run curl routes and bubble screens all year. He basically had no offseason as he had hamstring issues (similar to OBJ) and didn't play in one preseason game. Good hands, big body, can adjust to the ball in the air well, he will only get better.

3) Brandon Linder — played the best of all the rookies this past year. Long term fixture at OG. Great pick.

4) Aaron Colvin — Jags took him knowing he wouldn't be able to play til late in the year coming off an ACL. He played surprisingly well coming back. Made some big plays including forcing and returning a fumble for a TD. I was impressed. He could be the long term answer at nickel.

5a) Telvin Smith — let's put it this way:

Player A: 9 starts 104 tackles 2 sacks 4pd 1int 1FF

Player B: 16 starts 75 tackles 4 sacks 3pd 0ints 1FF

Name these rookie LB’s

Player A was Telvin Smith, and Player B was Khalil Mack. Telvin started off slow but quickly became a playmaker on defense. I was ecstatic when we got him in the 5th round and he's lived up to what I thought he could be. He's a vocal leader in the locker room too, he's only going to get better.

5b) Chris Smith — got some snaps late in the year with Branch's injuries. Only played in 7 games and had 3 sacks and a forced fumble, I'll take it. Depth.

6) Luke Bowanko — was always the Jags best option at Center amongst their options. Starting a rookie C with a rookie RG and a rookie QB with rookie WRs is ridiculous but Bowanko held his own. He needs to hit the weights more in the offseason and improve his strength but he's solid. All you can ask for in the 6th round, good pick. Good probably upgrade and he'd make a great interior OL depth guy.

7) Storm Johnson — Got some opportunities and was just kind of meh. Had a handful of flashes but looks like a gameday inactive type. 7th rounder though so no big deal.

Grade overall: B

If Bortles pans out it'll look like a really good draft.

1. Kyle Fuller

Had an extremely over-hyped beginning to his rookie season. After being talked about as the DROY after the first three games he promptly declined in his play and was beat bad most of the year. To his defense he was battling through about four different injuries and was being used in a defensive system that a 4yr old created. When healthy still believe he can play man-man and zone pretty well if put in the right position. Will be our top DB for years to come.

2. Ego Ferguson

Average rookie season. A part of a four man rotation. Played less than the other rookie DT because he is still a project, but showed the ability to learn over the year and was a very decent run stopper.

3. Will Sutton

Another average rookie season. Received more playing time due to his ability to be a 1 and 3 tech. Completely uneffective pass rusher compared to his junior year of college. Will look to get in better shape and regain his explosion, but will pair with Ego for many years.

4. Kadeem Carey

Didn't get many snaps because, Forte, but looked very average at best when get got touches. Sucked on Special Teams.

5. Brock Vereen

Placed into the nickel early on after letting go our starting nickel...promptly got torched. Played snaps filling in for the often-injured Conte and was LAWST at times. Played very well in the last few games. Can't blame him for being confused with Mel Tucker coaching him. Still doesn't seem like a starting safety unless he gets bigger and quicker.

6. David Fales

Practice Squad.

7. Pat O'Donnell

Rookied all over the place this year. Huge boot, but really made some dumb moves on bad snaps and shanked pretty badly. Most likely will be our punter for the next 15 seasons.

8. Charles Leno Jr.

Barely played. Sucked when he did get reps.

Big fat F.

Loved the Ebron and Van Noy picks then, and I still love them now. Neither got much PT due to injuries, and Ebron had drop issues, as predicted. But I'm excited for him going forward and think he's still gonna be a good one.

Those guys aside, Swanson was OK at best. And then you have that booboo ass kicker that lasted like, a day.

1.24 Darqueze Dennard - not enough field time to make an accurate assessment, but from what I've seen he wouldn't be bad as a wideout or slot.
2.23 Jeremy Hill - this guy should be the cowbell workhorse, the offense should be tailored around him and not on the weak QB we have.
3.24 Will Clarke - have not seen much, if any field time, to make an accurate assessment.
4.11 Russell Bodine - doing OK for a rookie, but is definitely the weakpoint of the line.
5.24 AJ McCarron - the best thing about him is his wife.
6.36 Marquis Flowers - OK so far for a rookie
7.24 James Wright - shows flashes of talent so much that I think he may be under-utilized.

7.37 Lavelle Westbrooks - have not seen much, if any field time, to make an accurate assessment.

1. Jason Verrett CB: Looked great when he played but sadly picked up a season ending injury midway through the season or so.

2. Jerry Attaochu OLB: Had a few good moments. Blocked a punt, had a forced fumble but aside from that he is a work in progress as expected.

3. Chris Watt OG: A bit unfair to criticize him given he was thrown into the dumpster fire that was the 2014 Chargers offensive line. But he showed improvements down the stretch.

4. Ryan Carrethers DT: Didn't play much but was ok when he did. Just a solid rotational piece on the DLine. Can't ask for more from a 4th.

6. Marion Grice RB: Didn't make the team, got beat out by Branden Oliver. Was picked up by Arizona.

7. Tevin Reese WR: Didn't make the team or PS.
