Peyton noncommittal on his future

Recommended Posts

I want to see the next era of Broncos' football. That said, I don't think Osweiler, Dysert, or any of the scrub FA available are gonna be the guy, so I would much rather start PeyPey than any of them. They gave RayRay a ring when he announced his retirement, so maybe they'll do it for PeyPey too. I would be fine with that :smug:

That's requiring a few assumptions Shotgun. First, health. He's an old man with more wear and tear on his body than nearly any QB in the league right now, so it's not a sure thing he'll be healthy throughout the year. Second, Fatigue. Anyone who has watched Peyton the past two years knows that he has no arm strength, he makes Chad Pennington look like Matt Stafford. How are we supposed to win a super bowl with a limited offense? The Colts figured it out this postseason, the Seahawks in the previous one, play physical with the receivers and stop the short stuff because Peyton can't make the long ball happen. We can win games in September and October and that's fine, but we would have a better chance with someone who can actually move an offense when the games actually matter. If this was say 15 years ago where you could win games with a game manager QB and stifling defense that might not be a complete death sentence, but the game today is so reliant of having a passing offense that you can't get away with mediocrity at the position.

So if the odds are 0 percent either way (and honestly that's discounting a guy before he hits the field), we might as well work on improving our odds for the future, and getting 20 million off the books is a great way to do that.

SI's Peter King says the Broncos "definitely" want Peyton Manning back.

"Take that to the bank," King writes. Manning met with the Broncos last week, telling them he's ready to play football again in 2015. Despite last season's precipitous final-month decline, he's clearly their best option at quarterback. Let's not forget that in Weeks 1-13 when Manning was healthy and the weather was fair, he compiled a 36:9 TD-to-INT ratio and had the Broncos at 9-3. Peyton's $21.5M cap number in 2015 is not overly excessive or cumbersome.

KUSA - Restructuring the contract of Peyton Manning is likely the reason for the delay according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

"Those two sides have been very tight lipped about the details behind what they're doing," Schefter told 9news at the NFL Combine on Friday. "Anytime you have a restructured contract involving a marquee player, a high profile name, it's a sensitive topic that takes a lot of time. It's not just this year but involves other years, that Manning may or may not want to play. It's how much money you want to pro-rate how much money you want to save against the cap this year, how much cash he wants to make, what he's comfortable living with, there's so many questions that have to be answered. It's a process to get a contract like this worked out."

Manning's guaranteed $19 million salary becomes guaranteed if he's on the roster March 9, but John Elway continues to say Manning can take all the time he needs to make a decision.

If he does play here in 2015, it would be awesome if it was for less money. We already have a ton of cap space too.

Peyton Manning, Broncos working on revising contract.

http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_27598844/peyton-manning-broncos-working-revising-contract

From some other articles that I read, this one got about the consensus of it:

Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reports Peyton Manning's restructured contract could create as much as $7-$9 million in cap space. The most-likely scenario would be turning a huge chunk of Manning's $19 million 2015 salary into a "signing bonus" that could be prorated over the next two seasons. A voidable year for 2017 could also be added. Cole speculates Manning will push for the Broncos to re-sign Julius Thomas with the savings. Feb 26 - 4:16 PM

So just fucking tragedy after tragedy here. Basically pushing the bulk of the rest of Manning's money onto years that he won't play, putting us into a worse cap situation when we're trying to rebuild when he finally leaves. Doesn't look like it'll be much of a paycut at all, either way. This also isn't the first report I've seen saying that Manning will likely try and force the Broncos to re-sign JT, so there's that too. Restructuring Manning just to save money to pay a king's ransom to 1/2 an elite TE. :sigh:

restructures almost never mean paycuts, especially with a player of Manning's stature, and I'm not sure I'd worry about the cap situation post-Manning because you're probably going to have a young (read: cheap) QB taking over for him which will open up space elsewhere, also when you have a guy like Manning you do what it takes to get the best possible team around him in his last couple years because you're gonna suck for at least one year after he leaves regardless

Anyone who thinks the Broncos have a better chance without Peyton is crazy despite his playoff woes. The Broncos have no one to replace him. No ready QB to step in on their roster and not in a position to be able to draft a surefire QB prospect like the Colts were fortunate to be able to do. Peyton is by far their best chance and the Broncos still are in position to win now. It makes no sense to move on from Peyton now when you have no ready replacement and your team is primed to win now.

The real truth that some may not want to hear is that the Broncos live or die by Peyton right now. When he leaves/retires, the Broncos will be in a rebuild mode for a year or two. The same is true if the Broncos decide to move on from Peyton; they are going to suck for a year or two; possibly more if they have no ready replacement. So the best option is to ride the Peyton train until he leaves while frantically looking for the future for their franchise. Having a team that can win now and dropping Peyton to look for a better option makes absolutely no sense.

Dutch... 0% is not a chance. Literally any option is better regardless of petty things like experience or talent.

Peyton doesn't like potential replacements though. He is only ok with backups who have no right being in the NFL and have negative chance to displace him.

I understand your pain. We went through a similar situation with Mcnabb. However, we had a contingency plan. We had the mighty Kevin Kolb waiting in the cusp.

Brock Osweiler is basically Kevin Kolb mixed with Jeff George and Akili Smith. PUT HIM IN COACH!

Now make McNabb 40 years old, incapable of consistently throwing an accurate pass over 20 yards, and an almost literal statue in the pocket.

Or incapable of throwing 5-10 yard accurate passes because he keeps aiming for the receivers ankles.

Per Rotoworld.com:

Peyton Manning has agreed to take a $4 million pay cut, reducing his salary from $19 million to $15 million.
The move creates $4 million in cap space for a Broncos team looking to sign franchise player Demaryius Thomas to a long-term contract. The Broncos are also in the market for up to three new offensive linemen, in addition to possibly re-signing free agent DT Terrance Knighton. Manning's $15 million base salary makes him the sixth-highest paid quarterback just behind Jay Cutler. Mar 4 - 3:12 PM

:welp: that's something at least. Hopefully that 5 mil doesn't go directly to Julius Thomas.

The Broncos taketh away, and the Broncos potentially giveth back.

Per multiple reports, Denver quarterback Peyton Manning can earn as incentives the money he agreed to sacrifice in 2015 base salary. In other words, his $19 million base salary has become a $15 million base salary plus up to $4 million in incentives.

The triggers aren’t yet known. It’s also not known whether Manning took a portion of his 2015 base salary as a signing bonus, creating even more 2015 cap room (but pushing extra cap room into 2016).

The type of incentives also becomes important. So-called “likely to be earned” incentives count as 2015 cap dollars, with a credit in 2016 if not earned. “Not likely to be earned” incentives count as 2016 cap dollars, if earned.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000476455/article/peyton-manning-passes-physical-for-denver-broncos

Peyton Manning's return to Denver is official. The Broncos announced the news Thursday, confirming that Manning has passed his physical and will return to the team on a reworked contract.

"We're glad to work something out with Peyton so that he will be part of our team this season,"Broncos VP/EVP John Elway said in a statement.

The news came after weeks of work on Manning's contract. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that Manning will take a $4 million pay cut, per a source informed of his plans.

NFL Now delivers a non-stop video stream highlighting the next generation of NFL talent in preparation for the 2015 NFL Draft. Start using it now!

ESPN first reported the news.

"I don't talk about my contract. I never have in 18 years and I'm not going to start now," Manning said Wednesday afternoon, via The Denver Post. "I've been working real hard and I'm excited to be back with the Denver Broncos. Can't wait for April 13 to get here when the team can finally come together. I'm excited to get to work and get to know the new coaches and looking forward to trying to make 2015 a special year."

The Broncos seemed to have the leverage all along, seeing as Manning, a quarterback well aware of his legacy, would never walk away from the game over a contract dispute.

Manning will make $15 million in 2015, according to Rapoport. He was slated to make $19 million next season. Rapoport adds, however, that Manning's new contract gives him the ability to make back the $4 million via incentives. NFL Media's Albert Breer added that wins in the AFC Championship Game and Super Bowl are each worth $2 million, totaling the $4 million in incentives.

Now, the team can move forward at full speed, building the roster around a quarterback they know will be there. With the additional savings, they might even have the ability to add a little firepower on offense to negate the inevitable loss of Julius Thomas.

The development ends what seemed like a lengthy, and somewhat passive-aggressive period of the Broncos' offseason. There was talk of Brock Osweiler stepping under center and discussions about how well Manning would even fit in Gary Kubiak's offense.

But after Manning made it clear that he could physically play in 2015, it became apparent the issue was money.

That issue has been solved for what could wind up being Manning's final season.

So now that's out of the way. Found his incentives to get back the $4mil interesting

Peyton Manning agreed to a $4 million pay cut to set up his return to the Broncos in 2015. That doesn't mean the quarterback can't get that money back.

0ap2000000374401.jpg

NFL Media's Albert Breer reported Wednesday that Manning's new deal includes a $2 million incentive if the Broncos win the AFC Championship Game and an additional $2 million if Denver wins Super Bowl 50. Manning's $19 million base salary in 2016 will remain intact, according to a source. The veteran passed his physical on Thursday at the team facility, cementing his return for the 2015 season.

ESPN first reported the incentive breakdown.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Wednesday's edition of NFL Total Access that Manning's restructured deal will have no effect on the Broncos' status with other free agents. More specifically, the Broncos are not in a better position to retain tight end Julius Thomas, who is expected to be heavily pursued on the open market.

2mil for the AFCCG, and 2mil for the SB. Those are the only incentives

The Broncos initially asked Peyton Manning to take a $10 million pay cut this season.

That would have been a more-than-50 percent slash, suggesting the Broncos at some point were at least considering a life without Manning. The two sides eventually settled on a $4 million pay cut, and the Broncos smartened up and realized this is Peyton Freaking Manning and Brock Osweiler isn't him.

A source told Sports Radio 610 in Houston that the Texans and Broncos had "very preliminary" discussions regarding a trade that would have sent Peyton Manning to the Texans early this offseason.

The source said the "very preliminary" talks took place before Manning took a $4 million pay cut to stay in Denver, which occurred in early March. Manning has a no-trade clause and would have had to sign off on the trade, so the idea of the Texans and Broncos engaging in legitimate trade talks still seems highly unlikely. Manning obviously isn't going anywhere in 2015.

See, if you're getting to the point where you realize you might just be better off without him -- it's probably time to actually go without him. Let's see what the future holds in Denver!

Rick Smith: Hey so we're interested in possibly trading for Manning. What say you Elway?

John Elway: No.
