Josh Norman is no longer a Panther

Recommended Posts

I think it's more like Romo vs Norman and Eli vs Norman.

I can't wait to see Dez vs Norman twice a year if he signs for Washington.

Not to mention two games against OBJ. :devious:

Well I guess the dinero is more important to Norman than winning, because he won't be doing any of that with the 49ers or Redskins. :yao:

Josh Norman signs deal with Redskins

Josh Norman's brief voyage into free-agency is over.

Just two days after the Carolina Panthers rescinded their non-exclusive franchise tag on the All-Pro cornerback, Norman agreed to a deal with the Washington Redskins on Friday, a source familiar with the deal told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport and Media Insider Rand Getlin.

Norman's new contract ends a brief courtship for the 28 year old, who became a free agent Wednesday, visited the Redskins on Friday -- flying to D.C. aboard the team's private jet -- and signed a deal soon after. Norman was contacted by roughly 10 teams within hours of the Panthers cutting him free, but Washington wouldn't let him leave the building.

With the draft kicking off next week, teams interested in Norman were expected to move swiftly. Norman also hoped to have a pact in place before the first round launched next Thursday.

In addition to the Redskins, the New Orleans Saints also were making a push Friday to reach an agreement with Norman, sources informed of the situation told Rapoport.

It's by far the biggest splash of the Scot McCloughan era in Washington. The second-year Redskins general manager has operated conservatively in free agency, looking for reliable veteran help at a decent price. The Norman deal tosses that strategy into the blender.

The Redskins sat just $11,682,340 under the cap before inking Norman, per OvertheCap.com, but McCloughan will find a way to work the books. Besides, if Norman plays the way he did last year, his money will be worth it.

Norman immediately turns the cornerback position into a strength for last year's NFC East champions. Bashaud Breeland was highly productive in 2015 and will make for a fascinating starting duo with Norman. Will Blackmon, Quinton Dunbar and Greg Toler all add depth. Chris Culliver, coming off ACL surgery, is a candidate to hit the bricks. The team still could use help at safety, but coach Jay Gruden mentioned in March that Blackmon and fellow cornerback Deshazor Everett could see snaps at the position. Adding a player of Norman's abilities gives the Redskins incredible flexibility.

The signing also tweaks Washington's plans for the draft. Seen as a team that could look for corner help -- names like Eli Apple, Mackensie Alexander and Kendall Fuller have been thrown around -- the Redskins now have the position sealed up.

The big question for Washington is whether Norman can recapture last year's magic outside of Carolina. As one of the leaders of a rough-and-tumble Panthers defense, Norman exploded onto the scene last autumn, compiling four interceptions and 19 passes defensed. He also allowed a 60.9 passer rating in coverage, the 15th-lowest among qualifying cornerbacks in 2015. His play tailed off for spurts down the stretch, but his overall body of work was superb.

Norman will be tested out of the gate with games against Pittsburgh's Antonio Brown, Dallas' Dez Bryant and -- that's right -- New York's Odell Beckham over the first three weeks of the season.

It's a gamble to drop millions on a corner entering his age-29 season, but Norman has the talent to make every penny worth it if he matches last year's heroics.

What makes Washington so unafraid to make this deal? This pretty much caps them and restricts them from making any other splashes and its anything but a finished product.

Because this guy will never learn from the myriad of mistakes he's made.

NFL Network's Albert Breer reports Josh Norman's deal with the Redskins is really for two years, $36.5 million.

Those two years are fully guaranteed, but the Redskins have what amounts to options for the other three years. Another $13.5 million becomes fully guaranteed in March of 2018. Norman will already be 30 by then, and corners have not traditionally aged gracefully. It is still a nice chunk of change for Norman, but, as always, the originally reported numbers were heavily inflated.

In the end the Panthers look brilliant and the Redskins look desperate.

If they can continue to generate pressure on defense, perhaps. Otherwise, you see that the CB group is now led by.... Brandon Boykin.

Our pass rushers sucked last year lol. It was Kawann Short and Star in the middle doing things. Ends were awful.

And no, the CB group is led by Bene Benewikere. Boykin is the slot guy.

I stand corrected. My level of confidence in the group didn't go up that much at this discovery, however. ha

Oh certainly not. I agree with you overall, you can't say who won this till a couple years down the road.

Regardless though, we weren't keeping Josh past 2016, so G-man wanted his third round compensatory pick for 2016 instead of 2017. Gettleman made the call that a holdout and the distraction it would bring to a tight-knit locker room wasn't worth it for one year of an elite corner when his philosophy has always been: win the battle in the trenches and the outside will take care of itself.

Could the Panthers potentially use a first rounder on a CB now?

Panthers should address it for sure in the 1st. I don't see any other position that is in more disarray than CB for them at the moment.

Norman shut down Julio and kept the towers and Cooks in check...In a pass happy division...yeah. It'd be wise for them to invest.

I'd say Norman and Julio were even last year. He shut him down the first time. Second time Julio had 96 yards with 7 catches on 8 targets against Josh.

Regardless, if the player at the top of the board is a CB, we will draft him. If there isn't one there and it'd be a reach, we'll trade back or draft BPA. It's how Gettleman drafts.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Pro Bowl cornerback Josh Norman wanted to stay with the Carolina Panthers so badly that he made a last-minute attempt to either sign his franchise tag after it was rescinded or work out a one-year deal for market value.

But Norman said Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman told him it was too late and blamed Norman's former agent, Michael George, for the split.

"My agent called them up and said if they wanted to do something, like a one-year, market-value [deal]," Norman told ESPN.com on Monday. "We wanted to come back. They said they weren't willing to, so we had to do what we had to do.
