Is Aguayo worth a second or third round pick?

Recommended Posts

I see a lot of differing answers on this so I'm curious as to what TGP thinks. Is a special teams guy worth drafting high if you believe he will be consistently great at the next level?

Personally I wouldn't spend a second rounder on him, but I would consider a third if I needed a kicker badly. Special teams players are incredibly underrated. A good kicker is the difference between a win or a loss. A good punter is the difference between an opposing team starting a the 30 or starting at the 5.

Obviously you can't pull a Raiders where you take a kicker in the first, but there are valid reasons to get your guy on day 2?

Meh... When guys like Justin Tucker (and countless others) go undrafted, I just don't see using anything more than a late round pick on a kicker/punter.

Obviously it's great to have reliable specialists on the team, but a third round pick can be used much more wisely elsewhere IMO.

No one cares about kickers.

I'd draft a fg kicker before a punter, and we saw the Jags use a third on Anger, and really, for as easy as it typically is to get a kicker in free agency any free agent is going to be substantially more expensive than a draft pick, so if you get it right you solidify the position for very little money for the four years of the guy's rookie contract

If a team drafts well otherwise but has had struggles with kicking for years, there's no harm in shoring up the position when many teams have a fairly considerable number of picks. I'm hesitant to draft a kicker or punter before the third day but, like I said, say you've drafted well and have a solid team but kicking has cost you games in recent years, why not solidify the position for the immediate future?

That being said, kickers aren't football players.

Why take a kicker when they are about as replaceable as a car air freshener?

When you know...you could take a real football player. Not saying kickers aren't importance. But there are plenty of them that can get the job done...but none should be taken before the 7th round in a draft.

As a Lions fan two years ago who watched his team lose about 2+ games because they couldn't find a kicker, I'm all about drafting him if the talent is there.

But not in the first couple of rounds. No way. And frankly idk which round it becomes acceptable because like any other player you might draft, there's a chance that kicker won't amount to anything. The same year the Lions spent looking for a kicker they had drafted one and he was total ass.

for some context on my last post: when Jacksonville drafted Anger they had a solid punter on a 4 year deal for a total under $3M, this offseason that same punter signed with Tampa for 1 year at $1.75M, in the grand scheme it probably doesn't make that much of a difference, but if you can spend that extra $1M per season on a position player you're probably getting better value from it

He's not worth it, no. However, some dumb team will draft him way too early. Wouldn't shock me if it were the Bucs either. :sigh:

Prophet! Prophet!

Well, doesn't surprise me at all due to the need for a kicker and the connections there. I can see why the Bucs would do it after our kicking situation lost us multiple games last season, but taking a kicker in the 2nd is pretty rough. I'm so happy that we ended up with Spence in the 2nd though that this couldn't bother me.

Bucs drafted good enough so far to be fine taking a kicker here. Aguayo most accurate kicker in FBS history.

I may be in the minority on this but I actually thing Aguayo was worth being drafted that high.

Kicker is such a niche position and you can generally find guys in low rounds and FA. However, there are very few kickers that come out of College with the success and reliability that he has had.

With EP's now as far away as they are and the fact that there are so many games that come down to a last minute field goal to win. Why not take a guy you know will consistently put points on the board and be clutch in a time of need.

I personally in this case feel it is perfectly fine as it isn't very often you get kickers as clutch as Aguayo.

Bucs second-round K Roberto Aguayo has never kicked in temperatures colder than 50 degrees.

Naturally, Aguayo doesn't believe it will be an issue. He certainly plays in the right division for a kicker who has never suited up in the cold. Aguayo also defended his selection in the second round, saying he believes kickers are going to eventually "change the game," whatever that means. Deadly accurate inside 40 yards, Aguayo wasn't quite as successful from longer distances in the ACC, but there's little reason to believe he won't be a highly-effective player in 2016.

Heh. The first year he's going to... take it to the limit. Oh, he's been strong. Did he miss some long FGs? Just playing by the rules. You can't have a newcomer come in and.... steal the show.
