Titans waive Mettenberger

Zach Mettenberger waived by Tennessee Titans

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans have waived quarterback Zach Mettenberger, as the team announced the move Monday.
A sixth-round pick out of LSU in 2014, Mettenberger started 10 games over two seasons. The Titans didn't win any of those games.
Mettenberger, who has a big arm but limited mobility, completed 60.3 percent of his passes with 12 touchdowns, 14 interceptions and a 75.4 passer rating for the Titans.

The timing feels weird, kinda makes me wonder whether there's something we don't know about yet. More likely he was making noise behind the scenes about a trade and when the team couldn't make one happen they decided they didn't want to deal with backup QB drama in camp. This could give him the opportunity to compete for a starting spot somewhere, but it's not quite early enough to consider it a courtesy to him.

He'll probably reunite with Whisenhunt in San Diego. They really don't have much behind Philip Rivers, so it'd be an upgrade to their QB room.

San Diego certainly seems like the most logical landing spot, if he lands anywhere at all. Keep in mind that the Titans don't have the best QB situation, we've got what should be a solid starter, but he's only a second year guy and he missed a lot of time for injury last year, but we have absolute crap behind him. To see a team like the Titans give up on him is not a good line on his resume. The fact that we cut him means nobody was willing to give anything for him, not even a conditional seventh rounder two years from now, which tells you what his market will be. I'm expecting him to clear waivers then maybe sign a one-year deal, probably with no guaranteed money so the team can cut him after the preseason without spending anything on him.

The timing is extremely weird, but regardless at the end of the day he is a soon to be 25 year-old QB with a cannon for an arm and has starting experience in the league. (Albeit not very good. :yao:)

Some team(s) will be willing to give this kid another shot in their QB room, because that's value not many teams have in the backup department.

you're right, he probably won't go anywhere that he could start immediately (though might Denver think he could compete with Sanchez to hold the spot until Lynch is ready?) but someone like San Diego or Dallas could do well to stash him behind a veteran who could be done in the next 2-5 years and see if they can develop him, if not there are worse fates than becoming the next Clipboard Jesus

another landing spot I kinda like for him would be New Orleans, as an LSU guy there's some local interest and they really don't have any present succession plan for Brees

also, I forgot Dallas drafted Prescott, so they have their developmental QB to groom under Romo

Chargers claimed QB Zach Mettenberger off waivers from the Titans.

"Mett Show" will be reuniting with Chargers OC Ken Whisenhunt, who was the Titans' coach the first 1.5 years of Mettenberger's career. Aside from Whiz, the Chargers are a sensible destination, as they lack anything resembling depth behind aging (but durable) starter Philip Rivers. Mettenberger should have a good shot at cracking the 53-man roster, likely as Rivers' backup. Kellen Clemens will be his primary competition.

:smug:

Kellen probably wins #2 job.

If the Browns put a rookie third rounder on the practice squad they are the most Browns edition of the Browns ever.

Titans GM Jon Robinson Talks QBs, and the Mettenberger Decision

Rather than holding onto Mettenberger, Robinson said he thought it would be best for both sides to make a decision now.
“Just trying to be fair to Zach and allow him to get started, get a fresh start, and go compete somewhere for a spot and playing time,’’ Robinson said. “Having Marcus here kind of afforded us that option to do it sooner rather than later and really give Zach and his young career a chance to grow in a new system, a new environment.’’
In San Diego, Mettenberger will be reunited with former Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt, who’s now offensive coordinator with the Chargers. The Giants and Bengals also put in a claim for Mettenberger.
Robinson said he talked to teams about a possible trade for Mettenberger, but nothing materialized.
“There were a lot of teams we touched base with over the course of the draft weekend that had interest in Zach, and a lot of those teams ended up selecting quarterbacks at some point in the draft,’’ Robinson said. “For whatever reason those discussions never really manifested, or culminated into anything.”
Robinson wished Mettenberger, a sixth-round draft pick by the Titans in 2014, well. He’ll be competing for a spot behind starter Philip Rivers in San Diego.
“Every team is looking for quarterbacks in this league for sure, and having two capable ones or three on a roster, that’s everybody’s goal,’’ Robinson said. “For Zach, being able to acclimate him back with the system there in San Diego, it will be good for him.”

looks like he's spinning making the cut now as a favor to Mett, give him the opportunity to find a team where he might be able to stick, take it for what it's worth, it is interesting to see that the Bengals and Giants also put a claim in

Steelers claimed QB Zach Mettenberger off waivers from the Chargers.

Mettenberger struggled in limited preseason snaps with San Diego, failing to play in either of the last two games. He was reportedly shopped to Dallas before getting cut. The Steelers are desperate for an upgrade behind Ben Roethlisberger, but Mettenberger isn't more than a rehab project. He'll be the No. 3 quarterback behind Landry Jones.

is Roethlisberger/Mettenberger the most letters in a QB room?
