The Basics

Tony Conner

Safety

Ole Miss

Senior

Age 22

6'0"

214 pounds

4.74 projected 40-yard dash

Positives

Good length, and does a good job of taking up space in coverage. Strong tackler when he lines up his man, and can drag his opponents down.

Negatives

Limited speed, especially for a safety. May struggle to hold up going down the field. Doesn't always tackle with form, and has a tendency to only use the shoulder. Limited in the passing game in general, and doesn't have the coverage ability to succeed.

Overview

Incredibly limited overall package due to lack of top end range. He has the size that you'd want for a safety, but doesn't have the athleticism to back it up. He's not good enough as an overall package to ever develop into a starter though, and will likely be relegated to a depth player role.

Grade

1.9 - Potential Practice Squad Player

Projection

He should go undrafted, and likely will. His traits as a player aren't particularly impressive, and the upside isn't there to be worth a late round selection.

The Basics

Zach Edwards

Safety

Cincinnati

Senior

Age 22

5'11"

203 pounds

4.76 projected 40-yard dash

Positives

Fearless coming downhill, and will meet the ball-carrier head on. Drives through when he makes contact, and hits with pop. Has the footwork to trail guys, and will limit them headed down the field.

Negatives

Doesn't always take the best angles to the ball-carrier, and will whiff on his man because of it. Doesn't showcase anything special in coverage, and relies primarily on being a downhill hitter. Struggles to get his arms around defenders, and gets shedded off too easily.

Overview

Fearless run defender who loves to make a hit. He lacks great athleticism or technique, but when he makes contact head-on he can stop guys in their tracks. He's likely not going to be a starter at the next level, but could be a solid backup that comes in on special teams or in case of injury.

Grade

3.6 - Potential Backup

Projection

He should go undrafted, and most likely will. He doesn't have enough upside to be worth a draft pick, but he has a high enough floor to be a priority free agent.

The Basics

Ryan Janvion

Safety

Wake Forest

Senior

Age 22

5'10"

194 pounds

4.83 projected 40-yard dash

Positives

Takes good angles to the ball-carrier, and pushes guys to the sideline with his positioning. Targets the waist when trying to hit his man, and goes for the best base he can find.

Negatives

Lacks pursuit speed, and won't catch guys in space. Can't keep up in coverage against faster guys, and will get burnt over the top. Doesn't wrap up consistently, and will bounce off of the tackle because of it. Struggles to defend effectively against the run, and cleans up rather than makes the hit. Lacks the athleticism to succeed at the next level.

Overview

Undersized safety who lacks technical skills or athleticism to be successful at the next level. He doesn't have the tools to be anything but a practice squad guy, and that's pushing it. He just doesn't have enough in his game to be worth putting on your roster. Can't cover. Can't tackle. Can't pursue.

Grade

1.4 - Potential Practice Squad Player

Projection

He should go undrafted, and I'd be willing to bet that he does go undrafted. There's nothing about his game that is worth burning a draft pick on, even a late rounder.

The Basics

Brian Allen

Cornerback

Utah

Senior

Age 22

6'3"

215 pounds

4.48 40-yard dash

Positives

Size to take on almost any receiver for jump balls. Ridiculous length, and can impact the play from afar. Pushes his opponent to the outside, and pins them to the sideline. Good at flipping his hips and turning down the field. When the football hits his hands, it's locked in place.

Negatives

Too handsy at times, and will try to lock up his man past five yards downfield. Somewhat awkward footwork when he moves inside, and can't mirror guys once they break into the hashmarks. Struggles to tackle consistently, and will blatantly miss guys in the open field.

Overview

Solid prospect with the upside to be a starting cornerback at the next level. He has the size to match up against almost anyone, and the playing length to back that up. He isn't going to be successful if you ask him to mirror guys over the middle, or to keep tight in coverage inside the hashmarks, but he's great at what he does. The tackling and aggressiveness with his hands are going to hurt him, but he's still a great upside selection.

Grade

4.6 - Potential starter, Consistent backup

Projection

I have him listed in the fifth round, and I'd expect him to go somewhere in the middle of the third day. He has too many flaws with his technique and footwork limitations to be worth an earlier pick, but the physical upside is certainly intriguing, and will likely draw a team to pull the trigger around that area of the draft.
