Cherry's 2017 Draft Scouting Notebook: Inevitably Quitting After 25 Prospects

The Criteria

Talent - Above all else. Regardless of the scheme a player is put into or how favorable their situation is, you can usually get a feel for how truly talented a guy is. This is not necessarily putting up big stats or getting turnovers. This accounts for strength, burst, speed, instincts, and general ability.

Technique - The second most important piece of my criteria. Technique is key at the highest level of football. You can be an absolutely monstrous athlete with immense amounts of talent, but if you are unable to apply your skills using proper technique you will fail against people who are better prepared. While technique can be taught, I think it plays a large role from the start. If a prospect hasnt learned the intricacies of their position by the time they are about to be drafted I have a lot of worry as to their ability to learn it over the course of their NFL career.

Intelligence - While this partially falls under technique, I think it is worthy of its own category. Intelligence is a very tricky thing to scout. Its difficult to read the field from a players eyes when you are not that player. But you can often see it in the way guys react and treat the situation in each play. Does the safety bite on an underneath fake and let a receiver get over the top? Does the linebacker adjust himself properly to meet the ballcarrier as he finds a hole in the line? Does a quarterback know when to pull the ball down and take the hit rather than chuck up a prayer? These things stand out in crucial moments.

These are the three big things I look for when scouting. If a player is talented but lacks technique or intelligence, they may drop to the middle of the draft or further for me. If a guy is rather mediocre athletically but possesses a good mental game and great technique they could come out as a borderline first rounder.

The System

Once again, I'm bringing the 0-10 system to my scouting grades.

10 - 9: Hall of Fame caliber player
8.99 - 8: Perennial All-Pro
7.99 - 7: Potential All-Pro, Perennial Pro Bowler
6.99 - 6: Potential Pro Bowler
5.99 - 5: Consistent NFL starter
4.99 - 4: Potential NFL starter, Consistent Backup
3.99 - 3: Potential NFL Backup, Depth Player
2.99 - 2: Potential Depth Player, Practice Squad
1.99 - 1: Practice Squad at most
0.99 - 0: Shouldnt make a roster

In the past I've started these and ended up never doing more than a few dozen guys before doing a shitload of last minute cramming when February and March roll around. This year I'm hoping to buck that trend and follow college football throughout the year in hopes of better understanding the growth and development of the prospects, along with consistently churning out scouting reports.

Here is the model I'll be using

The Basics
Name, College, Position, Height, Weight, Estimated 40-yard dash speed, Year/Age

Positives
What is good about the prospect?

Negatives
What is bad about the prospect?

Overview
General overview. The player as a whole.

Grade
Is he a HOF kind of talent that only comes along once every few years, or is he a UDFA guy?

Projection
Where will he likely be drafted, according to the grade I've given him?

Planning on doing Towles, Hill, Beathard, Barrett, and more after I get the first group of prospects out of the way. I spend a long amount of time on QBs though, and I don't wanna bog myself down just trying to study them all. QBs are also the most volatile from sophomore year to junior year, so we may see a guy like Kaaya fall to day 3 or something due to a bad year. I put a lot more emphasis on current tape than last year's tape.

Incredibly quick reaction time. Good pocket awareness. Finds room to work. Excellent scrambler (What we wanted in Manziel). Very good velocity on his passes. Doesn't have the ability to squeeze the ball in like a Wentz-type but very respectable accuracy and timing. Amazing when it comes to over the top passes where he drops it past defenders and in front of the receivers. Great stiff-arm and straight-line speed. Incredibly aware of the game situation and field position, runs for first then steps out. Throws a very catchable ball.

Negatives

Way too often looks to the run rather than finding a dump-off pass. Tendency to low-arm passes, which causes too many batted down passes at the line of scrimmage. Low-arming also causes the defensive backs to have shots on plays that they shouldn't on intermediate routes. Doesn't often go through his reads, prefers to run and find someone on the scramble. Rhythm passer. He throws where he has practiced a guy being, not so much where the guy actually is. This is incredibly dangerous on short curls where he is expecting a quick turn and catch, because if the receiver adjusts at all the ball is coming regardless and the defender can make an easy play on it. Rather than check his first read then shift to another one, he'll watch it for too long, pump fake, and then take off running. This isn't going to be as successful at the NFL level. Inconsistent throwing motion. Spends way too much time before getting the ball out. Spends like 5-6 seconds when he should be getting it out in 2-3.

Overview

I think Watson is more of a project than people are letting on, at least at this state. Maybe he improves for his final season, but at the current rate he's not a guy who you want to take with the hopes of starting day one and being a star. He's a project QB with the ceiling of a Russell Wilson type and the floor of bad Kaepernick. He's incredibly unpredictable, which both hurts and benefits him. It hurts because he seems to struggle with teammate chemistry and consistent success on a down to down basis. It helps him because as a defender you have zero idea what he is going to do next. He wows people with his feet and ability to make something happen when you don't think anything is there, but he needs to show more consistency as a passer along with doing better going through his reads at an NFL speed.

Grade

6.0 - Potential Pro Bowler

Projection

I see more Manziel than I see Russell Wilson, which is honestly quite scary for a guy who is billed as a franchise QB and a lock for the #1 overall pick as of now. He isn't as bad of a decision-maker as Johnny, but the same key issues are there when it comes to size & throwing inconsistency. I just don't think the upside is worth that high of a pick, at least not at this stage. I'd guess that he ends up dropping past where many think he will, very similar to how Manziel did, and end up being taken somewhere between 20-32 by a low-level team that trades up to get him. If he starts week one he is very likely going to get beat up badly, but there is long term promise and a reason to spend a late first rounder.

I mean maybe you think Manziel would have failed on the field, but he never really played enough to completely bust as a player. Its hard to say a Manziel comparison is doom and gloom unless your saying they share the same attitude and character. I think it has been shown that someone with that skill set can succeed and be a good NFL QB (Wilson, Taylor, etc).

From what we saw of Johnny he was a pretty disappointing player on the field as well as off of it. The reason I give the Johnny comparison though is that he has the same quality of inconsistency with his passing mechanics (Watson is smarter about not forcing passes though) along with his crazy and unpredictable movement decisions. Russ running is a magician, but he's calculated. Once he decides to make a move he makes his move and follows through. Watson will hesitate or change his mind at random intervals, which can make college guys look silly but will be way less successful against guys who are faster and stronger than college athletes.

Russ is the ceiling for Watson, but Russ really is an anomaly for short running QBs.

Yeah, dual-threat QBs can succeed, but not rushing QBs, at least not long term. Watson is more of a rushing QB than a dual-threat guy at this stage.

Fair points and I agree with most of them. We'll see about Russ being an anomaly, will it hold in the future? Quite frankly, I don't know much about Watson at this stage. Didn't watch Clemson that closely last year.

635795558266836648-MiamiCincinnatiFootba

The Basics

Brad Kaaya

Quarterback

Miami

Junior

Age 20

6'4"

209 pounds

Projected 4.84 40-yard dash

Positives

Not phased by defensive line pressure. Stands tall in the pocket. Excellent spiral and velocity on passes. Solid frame and arm strength.

Negatives

Inconsistent deep ball. Tends to underthrow mid to deep routes leaving defensive backs a chance to make a play. Not always good with ball placement. Odd mechanics result in easy completions being missed or receivers having to go up for a pass that normally hits them in the numbers. Very little touch on passes. Struggles going through reads. Very simple timing plays with only one read involved. Inability to go through reads means forced passes, usually incomplete. Awkward mechanics make it impossible for him to really bomb it. Misses every other pass.

Overview

Barring a tremendous leap in progress, Kaaya is an incredibly poor player right now when you look at him like an NFL quarterback. He's inconsistent with his passes, has terrible mechanics, average speed, and in general is a bad decision-maker. He's a day 3 pick with a lot of upside that a team needs to groom over the course of several years while he learns how to run a legitimate NFL offense rather than a dink and dunk on plays with one read. People are projecting him as the potential #2 overall pick right now, which is absolutely horrifying. Prepare for a bigger collapse in draft stock than Cardale had, if he doesn't jump light-years ahead compared to last year.

Grade

2.4 - Depth Player

Projection

A legitimate project QB with the measurables you look for, but none of the intangibles. He could develop into a top 10 QB over the course of a decade, but the odds are much more likely of him simply never reaching the top of his game and being a strong-armed backup. While I'd love to say that people recognize him for what he is, assuming he doesn't improve this year, I feel like a team would be comfortable burning a late day 2 pick if they believe they can mold him into a quality player. That said, I don't trust him, and I wouldn't touch him until round 5 at least. Buyer beware. Current Kaaya is a stereotype bust waiting to happen.

Watched some film on Watson against Auburn. He's much better having settled feet in the pocket but his passes are still inaccurate over the middle & he needs to work on going faster with reads.

Clemson WR Mike Williams is a tank. Dude has some drop issues but even then he's a guy you'd give 12-15 targets a game easy.

Auburn senior CB Joshua Holsey is a dark horse to rise up boards. Dude was shutdown against Williams and is great at knocking the ball away when it gets there. Hes not handsy coming down the field though, which is tremendously refreshing for a college CB. He's currently projected as a UDFA but he should be a day 2 pick, and maybe even a day 1 pick if he works on his short routes and tackling.

For the record I had Goof as #18 prospect and didn't anticipate him falling to the dumpster fire that is the Rams. There is a reason teams wanted Goff so high and he was basically the consensus #1 QB. Praying he either starts soon or gets traded for some picks. Or better yet, fire Fisher.

Watched some Fournette and Chubb today. Fournette looked pretty sluggish and mediocre at first, but a lot of it was because he had the box stacked on him and his OL was performing piss poor. He's an absolute monster in open space though. He slams into guys like he wants contact and guys bounce off like it's nothing. Probably a top 10 pick.

Chubb reminded me a lot of Derrick Henry, but he has much more cutting ability. He's the type of guy who picks up speed as he goes down the field, and doesn't really top out until he is 30-40 yards into a run. Once he gets rolling he's nearly impossible to stop physically, but it's easy to take him down with arm tackles early on in his run. He also isn't the type of guy who hits a hole up the middle. Instead he prefers to bounces around the edge and slowly pick up steam going around the side. Probably viewed as an early second rounder, but I wouldn't want him until late second or early third. Hell, I probably as a coach wouldn't want a player like him until round four or five just because I'm not a fan of slow runners before the second level.

I plan on getting to Mayfield once I get Kelly done. Will probably put my analysis on Ward up as well. I've heard good things on his pocket presence and a perceived ability to adapt well to a pro-style system, but you'd expect more production from such a quality cast of weapons. Kizer will be definitely be coming soon too.

I don't view Baker Mayfield that high. He really just dominates bad competition and struggles against the good teams.

Baker Mayfield and Ryan Fitzpatrick are basically the same quarterback.

Watched some more Kaaya and he's definitely improved. Went from a depth player to an NFL starter talent in a year. Have him as a 5.4 right now. Watson is down to a 5.3 after I watched some more tape from this year. Chad Kelly got a 6.8 after my first analysis. Has the arm talent and the pro characteristics you look for but his timing seems to be slightly off all the time and it causes bad passes behind the receiver. Kizer got a 7.8. Highest I've given a QB in three years with this grade scale. Top 5 talent. He's mobile but has the ability to go through his progressions and make all the throws under fire. Also great at traversing a collapsing pocket. Only concern would be an inconsistent deep ball but that's about it, and it's kind of expected from young QBs. Will be looking at Mayfield next.

Watched some Mason Rudolph and Mitch Trubinsky, along with Malik Zaire.

These are my current quarterback standings.

1. DeShone Kizer 7.8

2. Chad Kelly 6.8

3. Mitch Trubinsky 6.2

4. Baker Mayfield 5.6

5. Brad Kaaya 5.4

6. Deshaun Watson 5.3

7. Malik Zaire 4.9

8. Mason Rudolph 4.1

9. Luke Falk 3.4

10. C.J Beathard 2.8

Note these are based on current grades, not potential or what I think they will develop into.

Kizer is the clear-cut favorite due to his ability to accurately pick apart defenses with intermediate passes, along with good mobility. His decision-making isn't questionable like Watson or Kaaya, and while he doesn't have as good of an arm as Rudolph, Kaaya, or Kelly, he has the traits you look for in a college QB that is ready to come in and play mistake free football from day one. Think of a more mobile version of Luck with a weaker arm coming out of college.

Kelly is projected as a 2nd rounder according to most media outlets largely because he lacks the athleticism you like in a top pick and his tendency to make mistakes with who he targets. He has the ability to go through his reads and operate a pro-style system, but the biggest concern is that tendency to make a boneheaded throw every 15-20 throws that really puts him in trouble. That said he has the best arm of any of the prospects in terms of touch or velocity. His passes are usually pretty smooth spirals that are jumped not due to inaccuracy but due to bad choices.

I was mixed on Trubisky when I read about the growing crowd of fans he has in the draft community. He was pretty unknown before the season started in terms of QBs you might look at as top 50 picks, but he's done exceedingly well despite an average arm. He's not as mobile as most of the other top QBs (with the exception of Kelly of course) but he makes up for that with nearly perfect decisions when under pressure. He knows when to scramble. He knows when to get the ball away. He has an internal clock that is only rivaled by Watson. He's a west coast style QB who can piece you up on short to intermediate routes and occasionally hit you with a bomb that you never saw coming. Most years he would be the best pro-ready QB. Only reason why he isn't this year is the beast that is Kizer.

Mayfield is the embodiment of an average starting QB. Not a special athlete. Will just hit you with short underneath passes and slowly drive down the field. He's very similar to Kessler except I think Kessler had a slightly weaker arm but was better with reads. Expect an average QB who can avoid losing (or winning) games each week.

Kaaya has all the physical ability in the world. He doesn't have the cannon that Kelly has but he is more mobile and generally able to squeak out of the back side of the pocket easier. He isn't as good with going through his progressions, but the potential is there.

Watson has had problems before with looking too much like Johnny football in the pocket. He's jittery and doesn't know which way he is going until he's already gone. It'll work against college guys, but you can't do that against disciplined NFL linemen. His accuracy has also dipped this year and he's inconsistent even with his intermediate ball.

Zaire is awkward and fun to watch at the same time. Being a lefty results in a lot of odd circumstances when watching him. He's been put in a situation to fail being forced to run read option in a Notre Dame option that doesn't respect his abilities as a passer. He's not an athletic guy, but he's a solid short-to-intermediate passer who can potentially start in the NFL. He's a solid second rounder, but will likely be farther down due to misuse and being a backup to Kizer.

Rudolph has all the arm talent in the world when it comes to deep passes. Running the offense that Oklahoma State does, he is able to place the ball where he wants it easier. He gets many simple one-on-one matchups that allow him to heave it over the top or shift the ball slightly to either side to get his receiver open. He has zero development as a pro system passer, and has no ability to go through reads. The arm talent is there, but he very well could be Bryce Petty V2.

Falk is an odd case. He's not extraordinarily good at anything, and he's not extraordinarily bad at anything. He plays in probably the friendliest system in college football which makes him an appealing player based on his statistical output, but on tape he seems relatively mediocre. He has trouble going through more than two reads in one play, and it would prevent him from translating properly to the NFL and developing IMO. He is still a solid depth guy or low level backup based on his relatively good accuracy and short game, but he's never going to be something special. Low risk low reward I guess.

Beathard is pretty tough to watch because you can see the physical abilities he has, but he is unable to actually play the game mentally. He locks onto guys. He makes poor decisions. He forces passes where they should not go. In general he is a prospect type of guy who you keep as third stringer or practice squad player and hope to develop into a solid backup with a strong arm and ability to make a few plays in a spot start. He has a nice deep ball but that's about it.

The Basics

DeShone Kizer

Quarterback

Notre Dame

Junior

Age 20

6'4"

229 pounds

4.70 projected 40-yard dash

Positives

Great short and intermediate passing game. Not accurate to the point of placing the ball out of harms way every time, but smart enough to know when to risk it and when to not risk it. Usually within the catching radius of the receiver. Very good feet. Mobile enough to make plays with his feet when necessary, but not enough to risk his health or make dumb runs. Steps up in the pocket and avoids pressure well. Solid internal clock. Above average arm strength. Knows when to force the pass with heat and when to throw a smooth dump off. Very tight spiral. Very quick through reads. Very smart with the football. Safe, mistake free player. Handles pass-rush pressure incredibly well.

Negatives

Not the world's greatest arm. Won't blow your mind with an outside the hash throw with fire on it. Not a guy to be airing it up deep more than several times a game. Not always the perfect passer when it comes to ball placement.

Overview

The best grade I've had on a quarterback in the three years of truly scouting guys. He isn't an overwhelming athlete but he has a solid above average arm that gets the job done and a mind that truly runs the football field. It's very rare you see a guy who is so poised and confident as a college player. He steps up in the pocket and navigates trouble like a 10-year veteran would. His progressions are as crisp as can be. He's truly worthy of that #1 overall pick, something I couldn't say about the past quarterbacks who went #1 and #2. Don't be shocked if he turns around whatever franchise he lands at. Think of Andrew Luck coming out of college with slightly more mobility but a slightly weaker arm.

Grade

7.8 - Perennial Pro Bowler, Potential All-Pro

Projection

He's going to be the #1 overall pick in this upcoming draft assuming he doesn't start to perform terribly out of nowhere or do something off the field to harm his stock. Some team will be willing to trade a bevy of picks to go up and get him, and I wouldn't blame them one bit. He has the feel of a franchise quarterback when you're watching him go through the play, step up in the pocket, and deliver a nice clean pass. This is the type of quarterback you risk everything to go get because you know he is going to succeed as long as your system isn't shitty or you're at least putting a survivable OL around him.

NOTE: THIS REPORT IS BASED ON 2015 TAPE. IT IS NOT FINALIZED.

The Basics

Samaje Perine

Running back

Oklahoma

Junior

Age 21

5'11"

237 pounds

4.58 projected 40-yard dash

Positives

Solid understanding of pass protections. Good ability to cut for a big back. Not a first step burst guy but able to pick up speed as he gets rolling down hill. Bulky enough to shed tackles on size alone. Able to do damage in space when faced with 1-on-1 situations. Good hands.

Negatives

Mild vision at times. Too slow to make plays on his own. Projected to run a 4.6 but looks like a 4.8. Doesn't understand when to turn on the burners. Can break arm tackles, but won't do it consistently enough for a big guy. Very little ability when he runs into a guy on the inside, just lowers head and falls down. Was misused in college, so it's tough to judge exactly what he is.

Overview

While Ezekiel Elliott is tearing it up right now for the Cowboys, I'll always hold the opinion that it is largely because of his blocking. Perine, if I had to compare him to someone, would be a beefier Elliott. He's not athletically gifted enough to make you miss in space on a consistent basis. He won't shed arm tackles. His vision is okay but not great. You give him a hole and he'll make something happen, but he is an average running back with average qualities.

Grade

3.9 - Consistent Backup

Projection

He's not going to be a high pick like Elliott because his numbers aren't as pretty and he runs behind a much weaker line than Elliott did. That said, I wouldn't be shocked if a team likes the pass protection abilities and good hands he brings to the table. He is likely going to be taken in the middle of day 2, but I personally would probably wait until round 4 to make a move on him. He's a solid career backup, but he's never going to be something immaculate. If he gets on a team with a really good line he could become a three down workhorse with a nice 4.0 YPC, but if not he's going to hover in that 3.6 range and be known as a relatively average backup.

Watched the following today.

Royce Freeman

Shock Linwood

Curtis Samuel

Dalvin Cook

James Conner

Wayne Gallman

Kareem Hunt

Samaje Perine

Nick Chubb

Christian McCaffrey

Elijah Hood

Corey Clement

De'Veon Smith

Jalen Hurd

Dare Ogunbowale

Sony Michel

I'll jump through em real quick.

Freeman is my #2 guy at RB with Leonard Fournette. Incredible cutting ability. Great blend of physical and mental talent. Not too big to slow him down, but not too small to get banged up. He's a prototype RB if you're looking for a guy to hit the hole and rip off big plays in space.

Shock Linwood was a surprise to me, and I was hesitant to put him so high because of the Baylor scheme, but he seemed to be ripping off giant plays off left and right. I think part of it is the scheme opening up nice holes, but he was breaking ankles in space and has the speed to go the distance.

Curtis Samuel is an absolute nightmare to contain in space. Ridiculous spin move. Could be used as both a wideout or a running back because of his ability to make double moves and cuts. If he were even slightly better as an inside runner I'd probably have him breathing down Fournette's neck as the top spot.

Dalvin Cook is tough to deal with when you're trying to line him up in the open and deal with him on outside runs, but when he is inside he can usually be brought down with arm tackles. He's quick more than fast, which really damages that ability to hit the hole inside and then take off in a track race. That said he's a beast hitting off the tackles outside.

James Conner is a little bit of an average running back in terms of what you expect. He has solid vision, and a decent acceleration. He doesn't shine in any area in particular, but he has no legitimate holes in his game. I wouldn't be shocked to see him as a starter down the line. He's not going to make any huge plays but he'll gain a consistent 4-5 yards a carry.

Wayne Gallman is very similar to James Conner in that he is a relatively average back. Not special at any one thing, but will get you about 4 yards a carry. The differences are the Gallman is a slightly better receiver, but lacks the power and physical stature that Conner has to bust through arm tackles and gain extra yardage. Think of him very similar to a Tevin Coleman type. He's never going to carry a team on his back, but he's a good back to put in when your main guy is a bit worn down.

Kareem Hunt is a power back in the fullest. He is absolutely huge for a back, but still has a good enough burst to mow guys over without putting in too much effort to shove em. Breaks arm tackles. Isn't an amazing athlete or anything special as a receiver or blocker, but the ability to punch through a defense when necessary puts him as a solid backup and goal-line specialist.

Samaje Perine is, as I said in my earlier report, a beefier version of Ezekiel Elliott. IMO he doesn't make big plays on his own and will rely on good holes and an open path into the secondary. He's not a great accelerator, but when you put him in space he can do well. He's better at dealing with 1-on-1's than Elliott was at this stage too.

Chubb is very similar to Derrick Henry IMO. He's a slow build-up guy and it takes a long time for him to get truly rolling. He's a workhorse as well, and if you push for him over the course of 30 carries he is going to eventually make a big play or two and really wear the defense down. That said, he's not the type to break arm tackles consistently and he isn't a great athlete.

McCaffrey was initially a first rounder when I was looking at him last year, but has dropped off significantly this year. He doesn't have the same burst as last year and seems to struggle making guys miss. Last year he had roadrunner feet and it allowed him to make cuts at an insane rate. This year he is getting bottled up hard and not showing that same speed and cutting ability when in space. Solid pick-up early day 3 because of his ability as a returner and maybe even as a change of pace back w/ receiving abilities.

Hood was a pretty simple one cut guy who didn't showcase anything special, but was good enough to grab 3-4 a carry. He's a below average back-up who would probably chill around the #3 spot at RB on a good RB corps. Potential #2 if you've got a very bad group. Very low ceiling it seems, but the tape was limited.

Clement was a pretty mediocre back in all facets. Average to below average blocker. Average receiver. He was okay at occasionally making a burst run for 10-15 yards but was more likely to get 2-3 and get taken down by a single tackler. Likely a #3 RB and probably a game-day scratch barring an improvement or a drop to the practice squad. Some hope to make the 53, but it's close.

De'Veon Smith. Amazing athlete. Piss poor vision. Not a guy who knows patience and when to make moves. Just grabs the ball and charges hard right down the middle. Excellent speed and power, but will get taken down when hit by a guy or two. Huge amounts of potential if he can learn to control his running style. Likely to gas out quickly if you have him as a primary carrier due to the way he puts everything into every run. Practice squad or maybe a squeak onto the depth chart as #3 RB. Project.

Jalen Hurd. Overrated as hell. Prototype power back size but goes down to arm tackles. No speed. Tends to just fall down for 2-3 every carry. Was getting pushed around by mediocre competition in the film I watched. Not a guy who pushes hard through the hole, just tends to walk through openings and never put any pop in his step. Not a good enough blocker to even be a convert to FB or TE. Practice squad guy with hopes of teaching him. If not, out of the league.

Dare Ogunbowale. Zero ability as a rusher. Gets taken down by a gust of wind. Terrible blocker. Excellent in space off of catching passes. Excellent agility. Can accelerate and make cuts once he gets going. Practice squad guy with special teams ability and a hope to eventually develop blocking and running enough to warrant being used in a Danny Woodhead type role. Likely hovers around rosters for a couple years then disappears.

Sony Michel. Pretty sad all-around. No vision. Not an athletic talent. Goes down at arm tackles. Not an impressive blocker. Solid speed when in space, but still gets caught by the quicker of defensive players. Practice squad is the absolute peak. Likely a UDFA who gets a shot at a roster but misses and is never heard from again. Likely gonna return to school this upcoming year, at least. Thank god. I gotta cheer on a kid named Sony Michel.
