Browns Starting Kessler

Recommended Posts

It has to be reiterated until it's undstood, or he actually shows something that proves he's worth starting.

A vast majority of Kessler's yards have come in the way of YAC. He's so scared of throwing beyond 10 yards that it has directly resulted in him getting sacked, and hit unnecessarily. Yesterday, as well as in games prior we have seen Kessler almost throw a pass to a guy open (by NFL standards) and tuck it back in only to settle for a checkdown or get hit. Avoiding picks =/= winning games, and simply because Kessler takes the "safe" throw, is heavily sheltered, and when he goes deep fails miserably is very much a part of the reason they are in the hole they are in currently.

Of course his completion percentage is high and turnovers are low, because a vast majority of pass defenses are designed to give offenses the very passes Kessler is any good at.

The Browns have to settle for field goals consistently, and yesterday were 1-9 on third downs because they don't have a signal caller with capable arm talent to hit tight windows or more difficult passes required on those downs. There were two occasions yesterday alone where Kessler missed Coleman deep.

I have no problem admitting if I'm wrong. But nothing that he's done to this point gives me the impression that I'm wrong about him. Kessler shouldn't be the 1st man on any successful team's depth chart.

Don't see how Kessler is really to blame for the short throws. His OL is complete shit and they don't give him time for longer routes to develop.

This. Kessler has absolutely zero time to allow plays to develop down the field. He doesn't have the greatest arm, but they're not attempting deep passes because of the fact his line is broken within two seconds on almost every play.

Also, it's not like playing the short game is bad. Josh McCown has tried to stretch the field when he has been in this year. The result? He's throwing 54.9% and has 4 TDs to 4 INTs. Being a safe passer who gets the first down rather than the big play isn't something to slam a guy for, especially one as efficient as Kessler.

This is from two weeks ago on PFF, but it's telling of how good Kessler has been.

No quarterback has been under more pressure this season than Kessler (47.3 percent of his 146 dropbacks). His 84.4 adjusted completion percentage under pressure, however, is second only behind Tom Brady, and his 91.6 passer rating also sits second only to the New England QB.

Also another little stat I'm loving.

Highest adj. comp % vs zone coverage (100+ attempts)

1. Cody Kessler 90.0%

2. Tom Brady 88.1%

3. Russell Wilson 86.6%

4. Drew Brees 85.1%

That's a cop out, imo.

But regardless, doesn't make much of a difference either way if when the opportunity presents itself, he can't capitalize by making a good throw.

It's not the utilization of the short game that's bad. A lot of teams including the Lions rely heavily on the shorter passes.

It's the inability to hit the difficult passes when your team needs it that's the difference between a good and a bad QB. Kessler hasn't shown to this point that he can.

Additionally when you look at the article that comes from, it touches on the fact that Kessler's high accuracy comes from, again, dumping the ball off on outlets and checkdowns. That's great and all, but the other QBs on that list including even Bradford don't rely on just dumping it off.

Kessler is a type of QB that needs a great defense to win. He can't make big time throws into tight windows and won't make the big play to win his team the game. He will however be efficient and not throw picks, but I think the Browns still need to be on the lookout for a QB.

Kessler benched because Hue was looking for a spark. McCown left a lot to be desired .

I think that just ends the controversy once and for all. McCown should only come off that bench when Kessler is injured.

Kessler is 32nd among all QBs with at least 100 attempts in TD%. His TD% is worse then McCown's.

His 1st down % (34.4) is worse then McCown's (37.9).

Bringing in a cold McCown was a very stupid move to replace Kessler. Especially since Hue should be spending the rest of the season trying to see what he's got in Kessler. The fumbles by McCown were on him, he doesn't step up in the pocket and he cocks his arm too low and far from his body when about to throw. But Hue even said before the game that he needed and wanted Kessler to push the ball down the field more, and Kessler obviously didn't do it. Pulling him was probably his way of saying do it or I'll find someone else who will.

But regardless of how many turnovers McCown throws, and how many Kessler does not, the result has been by and large the same.

Point being, neither one is particularly good. At least with Kessler he's a rookie.

Thought I posted saying end of Kessler era. Fun while it lasted. Hopefully Browns trade him for a fourth and he rides out days as great backup.
