Eagles Want Torrey Smith

Torrey Smith's time in San Francisco could be nearing its end.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the 49ers are open to trading Smith. Schefter added in his report that multiple teams are interested in acquiring him. Meanwhile, Pro Football Talk reported that the Eagles are discussing a trade with the 49ers. PFT added in their report that a "deal is not currently imminent."

Here are both reports:

From the 49ers' perspective, the move would make complete sense. They're not ready to compete now -- not with their current roster, which is lacking an adequate quarterback -- and Smith hasn't been able to do much this season with Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick. He's caught 13 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns.

At this point, the 49ers should be acquiring as many long-term assets as possible and draft picks are more of an asset than Smith. The 49ers are also shopping tackle Joe Staley, and reportedly asking for a first-round pick, according to reports.

And from the perspective of teams who are competing for a playoff spot, acquiring Smith also makes sense -- so long as the price isn't too high. With a competent quarterback, Smith has the ability to serve as a dangerous downfield threat. With Joe Flacco and the Ravens from the 2011-2014, Smith averaged roughly 53 receptions, 898 yards, and eight touchdowns per season. He's averaged 17.2 yards per catch in his career.

If the Eagles are, in fact, interested in acquiring Smith, they must view themselves as a legit Super Bowl contender. After their beatdown of the Vikings this past Sunday, it's easy to see why that's the case.

I don't know how to embed twitter posts but the sources are Scheffer and LaCanfora

Man, to me Torrey is just a hit-or-miss streak/slant guy that drops a lot of passes. I have been really impressed with Doug Pederson, however, and think he might be able to put Torrey in open space to use that streaking ability of his.

Wentz has looked great because Pederson has been putting him in a position to succeed with creative routes and play-calling for easy, open completions. He's got Wentz protecting the ball and building his confidence along the way with an 8-3 TD/INT ratio. Putting Torrey on the table might open up the offense a bit, forcing more help deep.

Torrey Smith's speed alone creates space for guys like Matthews, Sproles and Huff. Guys who aren't vertical threats. All of the sudden that gives the Eagles Smith, DGB and Ertz that can stretch the field. Smith isn't a number 1 WR but he's dangerous enough that you have to respect him.

Smith's ability to create separation would likely make him our #1 WR, but we already have enough guys who struggle with drops. :(

If I'm the 49ers and someone is offering something for Torrey Smith, I jump all over it, no matter what it is (within reason).

It's always doom and gloom with you Steven lol. You can find something negative to say about anything when it comes to the Eagles lol.

All this would do is add one more inconsistent receiver who disappears from long portions of games to the Eagles roster.

Wentz is building chemistry with both DGB and Agholor. Matthews is OK. Just let this play out. DGB gets better every week.

This would be a good grab for Philly if it happens.

Someone has to balance out your spastic homerness.

Torrey Smith would be playing with the best QB he's ever played with in Philly and in a good offense. He complements Jordan Matthews very, very well and like I said, just his presence on the field opens things up for guys like Sproles, Matthews and Huff who do all their damage in the short and intermediate game. It also opens up the middle of the field for Zack Ertz to get vertical and if DGB continues to improve on the other side the Eagles go from having an offense where nobody can get open to having guys open all over. Hell, the Eagles running game probably improves with a legitimate deep threat and those safeties are GOING to back off because we've seen Carson Wentz's placement on deep balls. Even if Smith's hands are inconsistent it's a match up problem for almost anyone.

I admit I'm pessimistic, but I made a legitimate point, did I not? Smith would add a dimension to the offense we don't have right now but wouldn't help in the drops department.

Smith has a back problem. Idk. I feel like Jeffery even with the compensation difference. Is the better option.

If the Eagles do get either one of these guys their backs would be against the wall big time as far as the cap goes. The Bears or the 49ers would likely have to take on a contract as well as any picks we might send.

I don't see Chicago parting with Jeffrey

I'm not sure if this is accurate but apparently if the Eagles were to trade for Alshon, being that he's under the franchise tag the time has past for his team to sign him long term until the season is over. The Eagles aren't giving up anything for a guy they might not be able to retain and that's further complicated by their cap situation next year. The Eagles got rid of a lot of dead weight contract wise but they'll still be paying for some of those contracts next year. Alshon Jeffery is going to get paid if he hits the open market so chances are he'll want to force a bidding war for his services.

Torrey Smith on the other hand while he's been inconsistent is under contract for a reasonable price. Torrey is not a number 1 but his speed helps with spacing on offense. There are a lot of teams who have proven that you don't need a true number 1 to be a good offense but there has to be a vertical threat that defenses respect. Right now the Eagles have a lot of guys who do their damage underneath or in the slot but defenses sit on the shorter routes because the Eagles don't have a consistent deep threat. Having a guy who can get behind a defense is huge because not only do you have to fear the speed but Carson Wentz's arm. I mean we've seen the guy just drop deep passes PERFECTLY right into the arms of receivers. Is he worth giving up assets and paying him his contract. That's up for debate. It's a complicated question. You have to take in to consideration the cap situation the Eagles are in. Who they could sign in free agency and for what price and who they could potentially get in the draft next year but also the other holes on the team and how the Eagles can fill them.

I would like Torrey Smith, but the Eagles just had a really fucking good draft class this year so far anyway. In the 5th and 7th rounds it looks like they've found viable starters. Hell if Joe Walker didn't get hurt I think he could very well have seen some playing time this year. At this point we've worked pretty hard to give ourselves a full compliment of draft picks after giving a lot of picks away to get Carson Wentz and we should keep them. The best teams in the league have always built through the draft. I think at the very least signing free agent WR and TE's is going to be a lot easier when they know that number 11 will be throwing them the ball.

Still don't want Torrey. Target a WR in round one of next year's draft and sign multiple low-risk/high-upside free agents. Do a complete overhaul at the position, like the Patriots did in 2007.
