Contract incentives can get hilarious

Recommended Posts

I came across these two articles earlier today and thought someone here might appreciate them:

Tyreek Hill's punt-return TD in Week 17 cost Marcus Sherels $100K - Minnesota Vikings Blog- ESPN

Summary: Sherels (who returned 21 punts for the Vikings) had a contract incentive that would trigger if he led the league in punt return average with at least 20 punt returns, he led the league at a 13.9 after the Vikings concluded their season, but Tyreke Hill's 95 yard punt return TD in a later game that day pushed his average to 15.2, ahead of Sherels

Colts' Adam Vinatieri missed a $500,000 kick wide right in Week 17

Summary: Vinatieri had a contract incentive that would trigger if he made 90% of his field goal attempts, he went into week 17 with an 89.6 field goal percentage, if he made at least one field goal without missing any in Indy's week 17 game then he would hit that mark, he missed a 48 yard field goal in the second quarter, which held him below the 90% mark even after he made a 45 yarder later in the game

Any other stories like this surface?

a few more of these: Players who hit and missed performance bonuses in 2016

In addition to the two I mentioned above:

LA's Lance Kendricks finished the season with 50 catches for 499 yards, he had a $250k contract incentive tied to getting 500 yards, in the season finale he had a 13 yard catch called back for a holding penalty, but it's hard to have much sympathy when he only caught 58.1 percent of his targets

Baltimore's Steve Smith had a $1M incentive tied to playing 60 percent of offensive snaps and the Ravens gaining more yardage than last year, he played 63 percent of the snaps, but the Ravens, at 5563 yards, failed to match last year's total of 5749, team let him down

Tennessee's Rishard Matthews went into Sunday's game with 56 receptions and a $250k incentive tied to getting 65 receptions on the season, a nine catch finale, which tied his season high, got it for him, I wonder if he'll give Matt Cassell a cut for sending 13 passes his way (also tied his season high) amusingly, he was targeted 32 times in the last three weeks of the season, more than he'd seen in any other three game stretch this season

in possibly my favorite, Minnesota's Brian Robison went into Sunday's game with 7 sacks and a $200k incentive tied to collecting eight sacks, in the fourth quarter he shared a sack with Linval Joseph to end the season at 7.5 sacks, fuckin Linval

there are a couple others, but those are the ones I find most amusing
