Julio Jones trade re-visited, or holy shit the Browns suck at drafting

Recommended Posts

We all remember the blockbuster trade, but like with many past events the details are easily forgotten, so here's a reminder:

Atlanta got: the #6 pick in 2011 (used on Julio Jones)

Cleveland got: #26 (R1) #59 (R2) #124 (R4) picks in 2011, #22 (R1) #118 (R4) picks in 2012

Obviously Julio has established himself as at least among the absolute best receivers in the league and the Falcons are in the Super Bowl five years later, so nobody can say it didn't work out for them, but what would have happened if they'd just stayed where they were? Well, here's what' Cleveland did with those picks and what else could have been done with them:

The #26 pick in 2011

This was packaged with Cleveland's third rounder to move up to #21 and draft Phil Taylor, a DT out of Baylor who the Browns released in September of 2015, was out of the league for a year, then he spent the 2016 offseason in Denver where he hurt his knee in training camp before being released in August, he worked out for the Redskins but was not on anyone's roster, but he did sign a futures contract with Washington after the season

The Chiefs used the Falcons original pick at #26 on Jonathan Baldwin, a WR from Pittsburgh who's now OOF, after stints in Kansas City, San Francisco, and Detroit. Other notables drafted soon after that spot include Mark Ingram (#28) Muhammad Wilkerson (#30) and Cameron Heyward (#31)

The #59 pick in 2011

The Browns used this pick on Greg Little, who was released by Buffalo last August and seems to be OOF for good. Other notables drafted soon after that spot include Marcus Gilbert (#63) and Randall Cobb (#64)

The #124 pick in 2011

The Browns used this pick on Owen Marecic, a FB out of Stanford who was OOF after two years in Cleveland and one in San Francisco. Other notables drafted soon after that spot include Bilala Powell (#126) and Julius Thomas (#129)

The #22 pick in 2012

The Browns used this pick on Brandon Weeden, do I need to tell anyone who he is? Other notables drafted soon after that spot include David DeCastro (#24) Dont'a Hightower (#25) and Whitney Mercilus (#26)

The #118 pick in 2012

This pick was packaged with their first (#4) fifth (#139) and seventh (#211) round picks for Trent Richardson, again, no explanation needed. Minnesota used this pick to select Jarius Wright. Other notables drafted soon after that spot include Keenan Robinson (#119) and uh, really nobody else, it was the fourth round (worth noting: Josh Norman went in the next round at pick #143).

If anyone wants to look at either of the drafts and see if there's anyone I missed go for it: 2011 NFL Draft - Wikipedia; 2012 NFL Draft - Wikipedia and I think that's enough exposition, so any thoughts on the trade almost six years later?

People said the Falcons gave up way too much for a skill player when this trade happened.

I'll tell you what if he gets SB MVP... those people will act like they never said any of that shit. The Falcons have a great offense no doubt, but Julio adds a whole nother dimension to it.

LmaoBrowns

Let's also not forget the Browns essentially gave the Falcons Taylor Gabriel and Alex Mack by not resigning them.

Don't worry, there's no chance that the Falcons will win the super bowl this year.

Even if they win the SB and he gets SB MVP, he won't be the entire catalyst for their success. The Browns are worthless, but that doesn't mean the trade was worth it in the end. Give those picks to a competent team and what does it look like? Maybe they reel in four starters, three of them Pro Bowlers? Wilkerson, Gilbert, DeCastro, Julius Thomas, one bust >>>> Julio Jones.

Yeah just think if the Falcons were somehow offered numerous pro bowlers for Julio...especially defensive play makers...pretty sure they make that trade 10/10. The biggest reason the Falcons are in the Super Bowl is Dan Quin and the fact that they have a ton of play makers to go to. It's not that hard to shut one guy down even as good as Julio is he's just one guy.

But if you win the super bowl, you can't second guess a deal.

But if you win the super bowl, you can't second guess a deal.

That makes zero sense. "We finally had success when we might've had more success had we not made that deal."

Adding the "happiness" emotion to the equation doesn't make it unequivocally the right deal. What if Julio was only as good as Jonathan Baldwin and they won this year? "Welp, they got a ring, so no second-guessing."

This is kinda in the same vein as telling a fan of a team that's won a SB in the recent-past that they're not allowed to be upset with the state of their team at any point after. I don't expect you to understand winning culture, though. :Bills:

First of all: that was mean :(

Second of all, I mean more because if they win the Super Bowl, it will have been in large part thanks to Julio. Yes, you could have done better with a perfect selection, but you can never know for sure what would've been if they didn't do the trade. The goal is to win a Super Bowl. If Julio is a big part of making one happen, how can you question that?

The Falcons turned their franchise around and made it to the Super Bowl because of coaching and because Matt Ryan had the best year of his career. Was that partially because of Julio, I mean, I guess but Julio was there last year and Matt Ryan looked pretty bad at times. Teams make turn arounds in the NFL after bad trades and draft picks all the time.
