Saints sign AP to 2YR, $7M contract

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Saints are "closing in" on a deal with free agent Adrian Peterson.

 

Per Rapsheet, the deal would pay Peterson $3 million "plus." It's a very strange fit on paper, but coach Sean Payton has had friction with Mark Ingram. Peterson and Ingram are redundant talents, though Ingram has become much more of a pass catcher in recent years. Peterson is a zero in the passing game, but a better goal-line finisher than Ingram. The situation would make for fantasy headaches, and an always-tedious backfield even harder to figure.

'Member when the Saints signed an all-time great power back already way past his prime? I 'member. Looks like history will be repeating itself.

Saints signed Adrian Peterson to a two-year, $7-million contract.

 

ESPN's Josina Anderson reports the deal is essentially a one-year deal with an option for a second. While Peterson is not expected to be the nominal "starter" in New Orleans, he should see opportunities if he is healthy and effective. Tim Hightower touched the ball 155 times last season, and that was with Mark Ingram playing 16 games for only the second time in his career. Peterson likely will get even more work, making him at worst a top-35 back with the upside for more.

Poor move for both sides. Peterson isn't gonna get the touches he wants and the Saints aren't going to get better for signing him. I love it.

This is how I feel about it too, they practically need Peterson to pull one epic HOF season out of his butt for this to be a huge pickup for them.

Soon after the New Orleans Saints signed running back Adrian Peterson to play alongside quarterback Drew Brees, Vegas odds-makers announced that the team was officially favored to win every game on its 2012 schedule.

“We know for a fact that Peterson’s going to rush for over 2,000 yards,” said one oddsmaker. “Pair that with Drew Brees’ 5,000-plus yards of passing, and you’ve got a historically explosive offense in a year that’s long since passed us by.”
