Bills Fire GM And Wipe Scouting Departments

Recommended Posts

The timing of Whaley's firing was curious, of course, considering it came less than 24 hours after the conclusion of the 2017 NFL Draft. Bills owner Terry Pegula said keeping Whaley (and the scouting department) around through the draft completed the group's work.

"The decision was made now because this is the end of the scouting year," Pegula said. "We ran a process and as a result of that process after the draft we made the decision."

"He put the whole thing together," Pegula said of Whaley's involvement with the 2017 draft.

NFL Network Insider Rapoport says the scouting community expected the move, adding new Bills head coach Sean McDermott had a heavy hand in Buffalo's draft-night trade. Rapoport added some early possible candidates for the Bills' opening include Panthers personnel men Brandon Beane and Don Gregory.

Not defending him completely, but it seems like Whaley had been neutered for a while, and now McDermott is going to give input on the new GM? And the favorites to land the job are.... members of the Panthers FO? Coincidence?

Isn't this a little backwards? Lol

Yeah, a competent organization would have done this in one fell swoop, and not left Whaley to linger collecting paychecks and information on the goings on inside the organization.

Yeah a power struggle between Whaley and McDermott was inevitable given that we had to promise McDermott some level of roster control to get him to take the job. That being said, rumors are McDermott ran the draft and while player evaluation takes time, he clearly has a better understanding of managing assets than Whaley.

Apparently Pegula wanted Mahomes and the trade back was the final straw.

I think it cuts both ways, it probably means they were at least considering keeping him initially and there comes a point where you don't want him taking information about your board to another team

FWIW the Titans also let go of a few long time scouts shortly after the draft

According to LaCanfora. Basically every reporter with regular access to the Bills has said that was untrue. If Pegula wanted to fire Whaley for not taking Mahomes, he could've just overruled him and taken Mahomes at 10.
