Predict Your Final 53

Recommended Posts

I envision this thread being one we revisit as the offseason progresses it, but with rookie minicamps starting this seems like a good time to get it started. I think it's pretty self-explanatory, so I'm just going to get right into my Titans projection, I'm putting these roughly in depth-chart order, but don't read too much into the order:

QB - Marcus Mariota, Alex Tanney (2)

RB - DeMarco Murray, Derrick Henry, Khalfani Muhammad (3/5)

WR - Tajae Sharpe, Corey Davis, Rishard Matthews, Taywan Taylor, Eric Weems, Tre McBride (6/11)

TE - Delanie Walker, Jonnu Smith, Phillip Supernaw (3/14)

OT - Taylor Lewan, Jack Conklin, Dennis Kelly, Brad Seaton (4/18)

G - Quinton Spain, Sebastian Tretola, Tim Lelito, Josh Kline (4/22)

C - Ben Jones, Corey Levin (2/24)

DL - Jurrell Casey, Angelo Blackson, Austin Johnson, Sylvester Williams, Karl Klug, DaQuan Jones, Mehdi Abdesmad (7/31)

ILB - Avery Williamson, Wesley Woodyard, Jayon Brown, Daren Bates, Nate Palmer (5/36)

OLB - Derrick Morgan, Brian Orakpo, Aaron Wallace, Josh Carraway, Kevin Dodd (5/41)

CB - Logan Ryan, Adoree' Jackson, Brice McCain, LeShaun Sims, Kalan Reed (5/46)

S - Kevin Byard, Johnathan Cyprien, Da'Norris Searcy, Brynden Trawick (4/50)

K - Ryan Succop (1/51)

P - Brett Kern (1/52)

LS - Beau Brinkley (1/53)

A couple of notes:

The backup QB is gonna be an interesting position to watch, we just extended Cassel, but I don't know that Mariota needs a veteran behind him at this point and Tanney might not be eligible for practice squad this year. Tanney passed on an opportunity to join the Browns' active roster last year to stay on our PS so I could see the team rewarding that loyalty.

Cutting Jalston Fowler would be tough, but teams are getting away from a true FB and everything I've read about Jonnu Smith says he can line up there if we need him to. That said, I could easily see Fowler taking a spot from someone like Tre McBride or one of the last couple CBs.

Harry Douglas should have been a harder cut than he was but at this point in his career I'm just not sure what he adds to the team.

I kept a lot of olinemen, I kinda think you can never have too many, but given our talent at the top I could see sacrificing some depth there to keep a borderline player somewhere else (maybe that's where Fowler's roster spot comes from).

CB was a really tough position because we have a lot of almost decent players. D'Joun Smith was my last cut, as a 2015 third rounder you've gotta think he's got some potential and at a weak spot for us depth could be a really good thing. I could also see one of our CBs coming from somewhere else, there are a couple of guys I still like available as free agents and more cuts will be coming.

With training camp starting up, this feels like a good time to bump this. I'm going to start from scratch then go back and look at the changes from my first list, here we go:

QB (2/2): Marcus Mariota; Alex Tanney

RB/FB (4/6): DeMarco Murray; Derrick Henry; Kalfani Muhammad; Jalston Fowler

WR (6/12): Rishard Matthews; Corey Davis; Eric Decker; Taywan Taylor; Tajae Sharpe; Eric Weems

TE (3/15): Delanie Walker; Jonnu Smith; Phillip Supernaw

OT (3/18): Taylor Lewan; Jack Conklin; Dennis Kelly

OG (3/21): Josh Kline; Quinton Spain; Tim Lelito

C (2/23): Ben Jones; Corey Levin

DL (7/30): Jurrell Casey; Sylvester Williams; DaQuan Jones; Karl Klug; Angelo Blackson; Austin Johnson; Mehdi Abdesmad

OLB (5/35): Brian Orakpo; Derrick Morgan; Kevin Dodd; Erik Walden; Aaron Wallace

ILB (5/40): Avery Williamson; Wesley Woodyard; Jayon Brown; Daren Bates; Nate Palmer

CB (5/45): Logan Ryan; Adoree' Jackson; LeShaun Sims; Brice McCain; D'Joun Smith

S (5/50): Kevin Byard; Johnathan Cyprien; Da'Norris Searcy; Curtis Riley; Brynden Trawick

ST (3/53): Brett Kern (P); Ryan Succop (K); Beau Brinkley (LS)

Changes: damn, I kept a lot of olinemen in the first run, dropping Seaton (who'll be a good practice squad candidate) and Tretola (who the Titans actually cut a couple days ago) gave room to keep a FB (not sure why I had Fowler not making the cut previously) and allowed me to keep one more safety.

The WR spot changed with the Decker signing, him occupying a WR spot knocked McBride out, I do think there's a slight chance McBride could make it over Sharpe based on special teams play, Sharpe doesn't contribute much there so I'm not sure he'll hold onto the 5th WR spot, but at this point I think Sharpe has too much talent not to make the team.

The OLB spot is another where an actual signing forced me to make adjustments, Erik Walden is definitely going to make the team and should be a solid rotational piece, to make room Josh Carraway (this year's 7th round pick) gets pushed to the practice squad. For some reason I kept Smith over Reed this time around, it's pretty much a toss-up between those two for the last CB spot, and I kept an extra safety in Curtis Riley, otherwise the defense is the same.

Actual 53 difference:

T.J. Ward got cut which is a big one

Kalif Raymond didn't quite make the team

Ty Sambrailo got traded so Billy Turner made it as an offensive lineman instead.

Brock Asswater got signed for the vet minimum so we have a non injured backup for Siemian.

We're down to the last preseason game, so I'm gonna take one more stab at this.

QB (2/2): Marcus Mariota; Matt Cassel

2 for 2

RB/FB (4/6): DeMarco Murray; Derrick Henry; David Fluellin; Jalston Fowler

6 for 6

WR (6/12): Rishard Matthews; Corey Davis; Eric Decker; Taywan Taylor; Tajae Sharpe; Eric Weems

10 for 11 we only kept five, with Sharpe going in IR and Weems getting cut, Douglas made it in to round out the group

TE (3/15): Delanie Walker; Jonnu Smith; Phillip Supernaw

13 for 14

Oline (8/23): Taylor Lewan; Jack Conklin; Josh Kline; Quinton Spain; Ben Jones; Dennis Kelly; Tyler Marz; Tim Lelito

20 for 22 Corey Levin ended up making the roster instead of Marz, kinda surprising since Marz was often the first guy off the bench in the preseason

DL (7/30): Jurrell Casey; Sylvester Williams; DaQuan Jones; Karl Klug; Angelo Blackson; Austin Johnson; Antwaun Woods

25 for 28 another position we went thinner on than I expected, and one of the six players we ended up keeping (David King) wasn't on the roster until late last week, Blackson and Woods both missed the cut

OLB (5/35): Brian Orakpo; Derrick Morgan; Kevin Dodd; Erik Walden; Aaron Wallace

30 for 34 and we pick up a roster spot, the team ended up keeping six, holding on to rookie Josh Carraway in addition to the five I listed

ILB (5/40): Avery Williamson; Wesley Woodyard; Jayon Brown; Daren Bates; Nate Palmer

35 for 39

CB (5/45): Logan Ryan; Adoree' Jackson; LeShaun Sims; Brice McCain; Kalan Reed

40 for 45 and we pick up the last roster spot, the Titans kept the five I listed as well as Tye Smith

S (5/50): Kevin Byard; Johnathan Cyprien; Da'Norris Searcy; Curtis Riley; Brynden Trawick

45 for 50

ST (3/53): Brett Kern (P); Ryan Succop (K); Beau Brinkley (LS)

48 for 53

I only missed five, not bad for how little attention I've been giving the preseason
