Jay Gruden keeps getting bugged about Cousins and how long he will be around. I know we have talked about Cousins a few times before, but I want to see a definitive count..

Who believes Cousins is a FA QB? Meaning you would feel good about signing him to a long-term and lucrative contract to be your future.

Cousins will never be a top five QB, but you don't need a top five QB to be successful. What you do need is a serviceable QB, and Kirk Cousins is that. Unfortunately for NFL teams there are 32 teams, all of which need a serviceable QB to be successful, but there aren't 32 serviceable QBs available. That means you're gonna have to pay a premium for the serviceable QBs that are around. I know it'll give you some trouble with the cap, but you can make it work if you draft well, and it's a lot easier to find serviceable players who can contribute quickly at every other position than it is at QB.

In conclusion:

I essentially feel the same about him as I do Ryan Tannehill. He is absolutely a good enough QB to win you the Super Bowl with the right supporting cast around him, and with some continuity, he could get even better. Is he a top 5 QB in this league? No. But considering how hard it is to find a QB's that's competent at all, I'd take him.

Yes, but I'd be willing to move him if the right quarterback prospect was falling into my lap via the draft. The cap room it takes to pay Kirk Cousins is not worth the room you'd have open by trading him and acquiring a bunch of young talent via the draft. If I could get two firsts and two seconds for Kirk, I'd do it without hesitation, as long as I have a very good plan for how to address the quarterback position following his exit.

Just found out that Cousins YPA as a starter has been very high. :notbad:

I don't think he's a franchise QB, but he's probbaly the best they can do right now. I'd sign him to an Andy Dalton type deal. very front loaded, that way he can be let loose in a few years.

The question is whether or not Kirk takes such a deal, knowing the price he commands on the open market.

I think he is. He has been pretty damn good for 2 seasons now. He very nearly led the Redskins to the playoffs. Their defense is horrible. Beef it up and they'll go somewhere with Kirk.

I am personally not entirely sold on Kirk. Is he over-performing for a new contract? He hasn't won a legitimate big game against a good team. And he seems to be fairly hot/cold. That being said, the Redskins would be dumb to not pay him seeing how he has kept them in games and has led them to the playoffs. He had top tier stats last year and he has done so with a lackluster run game and a soft defense backing him up.

That's true. And in which case, I'd let him walk.

Cousins is not so good of a prospect to where I think the Redskins should invest a brutal long term contract. Spending do so much on a QB I don't think is a franchise QB is a one way ticket to being the Atlanta Hawks of the NFL.

I think his accuracy and intermediate game is very impressive, but I question how long his arm will have life when Gruden asks him to make so many difficult/high velocity throws. I really don't think his arm strength is where you want it to be in today's NFL. I really, truly think he has a below average shelf life, and I wouldn't sign him long term. Washington is absolutely handling this situation correctly. Also, the whole "chip on his shoulder" thing is wearing thin on me. He's also not that smart, in my opinion, screaming "how you like me now?" at the GM last year when everybody knows it's Allen/Snyder who are hesitant on him. It's like, Jesus dude, read between the freakin' lines. I also felt the season ending INT against the Giants was very gunslinger-esque. Bad Favre or Romo or Brees bad. Yes, those three are all miles better than Kirk is, but you don't want your non top 5 QB having a penchant for those kinds of mistakes.

As for the franchise QB question. I agree with everybody else in that he's good enough to win a championship if they put the right team around him. Therefore, I'd call him a a franchise QB technically but there's definitely an asterisk beside his name.
