TGP2NBA: Pounders @ Supersonics

Recommended Posts

Seattle Supersonics (13-2) vs. Pensacola Pounders (16-0)

November 28th - Seattle, WA

First Quarter

The opening minutes are evenly matched, with teams trading shots in the paint. As the quarter goes on, though, Seattle steps up their defense, causing turnovers and forcing bad shots. The Sonics, meanwhile, are effective on offense, particularly Jack Package and CJ Monk. They end the quarter with momentum on their side, ahead 26-16.

Stat of the Quarter: The Pounders, normally a tremendous shooting team, are shooting just 38% (6 for 16) from the field.

Second Quarter

The Pounders have apparently decided to counter Seattle's defense with more perimeter shooting. Shane Barron and Jackie Moon are taking threes liberally. This helps them keep pace with the Sonics, who continue to score on offense. Both teams get aggressive on defense in the paint, leading to more fouls and slowing the game down. After an evenly matched second quarter with no big momentum swings for either side, the Seattle crowd cheers. Sonics ahead of the Pounders, 56-43.

Halftime Observations:

  • Seattle's leading scorer is CJ Monk, with 18 points.
  • Pensacola's leading scorer is Jackie Moon, with 20 points.
  • Both starting centers have been active on the boards but not on offense; Marco Malgritti and Gustav Silas have a combined 6 points.
  • After a poor first quarter of shooting, Penscacola is now shooting 54% from the field (18 of 33).

Third Quarter

The Pounders get the start to the second half they need, going on a 10-2 run and narrowing the score to 58-53. Chance Phillips responds with a three, and the Sonics get some momentum back. The Pounders are working inside almost exclusively, with Jackie Moon as the feature on offense. The Sonics have the quarter's final possession, up 76-65. Samuel Kaiser misses a three, Jack Package gets the rebound, dishes back out to CJ Monk for three at the buzzer...it's good! The Seattle crowd comes to its feet again with the Sonics still on top, 79-65.

Stat of the Quarter: The Supersonics are in foul trouble. Jack Package, CJ Monk, and Scott Kaiser all start the fourth quarter with 4 personal fouls.

Fourth Quarter

With multiple starters resting for the Sonics, the Pounders go right at them, hitting field goals on five consecutive possessions and going on an 11-4 run. The score is now 84-76, Sonics, and their starters reenter the game. Within minutes, Package and Monk pick up their 5th fouls. The Pounders keep working Jackie Moon, who handles Package (in foul trouble) and keeps scoring points. The Pounders trail 89-82 with seven minutes left. Moon works the post, dumps it off to Zack Graham who puts up a shot, and he's fouled by CJ Monk! That's Monk's 6th, and he is out! Graham makes both free throws, and it's an 89-84 game.

The Pounders narrow the gap while the Sonics go cold shooting. Samuel Kaiser, who has struggled shooting tonight, picks up his 5th personal foul. With 4:30 on the clock, the Pounders have the ball with a chance to tie the game, down 91-89. It's Moon again down low, back out to Shane Barron, jumper, it's good. And one! And that's on Kaiser, his 6th! The Sonics are down two starters now, and Barron's free throw is good. The Pounders have climbed all the way back, on top 92-91 with four minutes to go in regulation.

The Sonics ditch their perimeter shooting style and work it down low with Package and Malgritti. The Pounders keep making things happen on Monix-to-Moon possessions. With two minutes to go, the Pounders still have a slim lead. Marco Malgritti picks up his 4th foul. The Sonics are in big trouble if this goes to overtime.

One minute left, Pounders ball, up 99-97. Ed Monix lets the shot clock run, looking for Moon. He gives it to him, double-team defense. Moon somehow dishes off to Silas, who throws down a dunk! 101-97, Pounders, 48 seconds left!

The Sonics hurry up the court, looking for a shot. Phillips puts one up, no good, but Malgritti snags the rebound. He puts up a jumper, no good. It bounces around. Phillips gets it again, quick jumper. Good! 101-99, Pounders. They inbound, and the Sonics are forced to foul, with only 25 seconds on the clock.

Zack Graham at the line, shooting two. First shot...good. Second shot...good! 103-99. Timeout, Supersonics.

Phillips inbounds and soon gets the ball back, putting up a three, won't go. Package on the rebound, but he doesn't shoot. Seattle wants a three here. They keep trying to get it to Phillips, but they can't, and time is running out. At last, Package just puts up a shot, doesn't go. Malgritti on the rebound, gets it back to Phillips for three...no good. It bounces around, and the horn sounds! That's it! Game over. A stunning fourth-quarter comeback, and the Pounders are still undefeated.
