A quiet Monday in the NFL has been rocked by a surprise firing in Carolina.

Panthers owner Jerry Richardson announced that general manager Dave Gettleman has been relieved of his duties.

Richardson explained in a statement that "much thought and a long evaluation of our football operations" led to his decision, adding: "I want to thank Dave for the role he played in our success over the past four seasons. While the timing of this decision is not ideal, a change is needed."

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Gettleman was in a "shaky" place with ownership, pointing to "rumblings that all was not well" between Gettleman and Richardson after the general manager allowed Pro Bowl cornerback Josh Norman to walk last offseason.

 

 

Make no mistake: This is a stunning turn of events, especially the timing. The Panthers are days away from launching training camp and now veer into the guts of the season without a clear-cut general manager. Before dumping Gettleman, the team also saw president Danny Morrison resign in February before assistant general manager Brandon Beane bolted for a job with the Bills.

The Panthers enjoyed remarkable success during Gettleman's run with the club, which began in 2013. Despite finishing 6-10 last season, Carolina was a playoff entry in each of his first three campaigns, a streak that peaked with an appearance in Super Bowl 50. The 66-year-old Gettleman capably steered the franchise out of salary-cap hell upon his arrival and worked well with coach Ron Rivera, lacing the roster with affordable, productive free agents and plug-and-play college prospects.

Richardson's eleventh-hour decision points to a level of unrest behind closed doors that few would have fretted over a day ago. One of the most consistent franchises in the NFC is suddenly packed with questions heading into the regular season.

First round picks, yes. Carolina hasn't missed since 2000 unless you count Otah in '08, which was due to injuries. Sorry that I give professional evaluators more weight than armchair ones unless proven otherwise. I'd take your opinion over the Browns FO.

 

This was not about the most recent draft, if you think that you're silly. NFL people aren't going to knee-jerk fire someone because they think he had a bad draft, if Richardson even thinks that at all. They'd let them play at least one season first.

 

The only thing that makes sense to me is that TD and Olsen want new contracts and DG wasn't going to give TD what he wanted. I find it hard to think he wouldn't give Olsen what he wanted, but I understand TD maybe wanting too much.

Panthers media is reporting it was indeed over TD's contract situation. DG was going to be all business, as he has done with other franchise icons, and JR put his foot down and told DG to extend Davis' contract, whereupon Gettleman refused, leading to him being fired.

 

This franchise went into cap hell because of JR and Hurney's proclivity to giving aging vets huge contracts, (see Delhomme, Jake and Williams, DeAngelo), and if this report is true it just solidifies the Panthers will never have a consistent winning culture until JR is gone.

 

This is a business in the end, and while I don't like how DG did it sometimes, by and large he was very successful as a GM. Panthers had the 6th highest winning % in the league during his tenure, a sharp contrast with previous years.

Because Cam got absolutely destroyed behind a piss poor offensive line that Gettlemen through neglect... created.

If he would've even had decent protection they probably would've won as your defense was strong and the Broncos offense was meh at best.

 

Be content with losing SB's because you can't win the LOS. I'd be furious seeing DT after DT taken in the first round but nothing to done to protect one of the best things to happen in Carolina in their history.

We went 15-1 that season. Can you honestly blame him for thinking we had good enough OTs? Also do you really think at the beginning of 2015, the Panthers FO said to themselves, "We have the ability to make a SB run this year, we need to get some elite talent at the tackle positions right now."? Especially after KB went down in the preseason?

 

My point here is that the Panthers were not supposed to be any good in 2015. Ted Ginn was the #1 wideout. Why mortgage your future to get a guy right now if you don't actually think you're good enough to contend? And then through 2015, our tackles were servicable.

 

The SB loss was not only because of the O-line. After the Falcons blew that 28-3 lead, I finally got over 50 enough to rewatch it.

 

Do not get me wrong, Michael Oher got destroyed by Ware and Remmers was annihilated by Von. But even on plays where they didn't get to Cam in under two seconds- which actually was the majority of the snaps- the WRs simply were not open. Denver's secondary had 3 top-10 CBs in it. Maybe 3 top-15 at worst. And we had a wideout core of Brown, Ginn, and Funchess. It was a damn miracle that it worked as long as it did. Unless there was a pair- and we needed both- of elite tackles out there, they wouldn't have done enough through the air to matter.

 

You are ridiculously overestimating the intelligence level of Jerry Richardson. This was not a "We are winning, but not winning SBs, so goodbye DG." This was purely a heart > head decision. DG was going to cut Davis, or perhaps let him play out this year but not re-sign him. Richardson had had enough of letting franchise icons go. Panthers media is reporting this all over the place.

I think that is solely dependent on their o line. If their o line is absolute dog shit again then it could be a rough year. Out of the entire NFCS I didnt see them improve as much as Atlanta or Tampa. that said they were better than Tampa talent wise so who knows how far Tampa has come, and whether or not they can challenge the Panthers consistently, but it would not surprise me though. I think Atlanta takes the division and the Panthers miss out on the playoffs at the strength of the NFCW and NFCE for Wild cards although they could snatch one from the NFCE.
