Browns reportedly botch McCarron trade

Recommended Posts

McCarron was going to be traded out of Cincy IIRC, though. This was a big chance.

If you remember correctly? A story just came out that said he was about to be traded to the Browns. Your memory isn’t that bad Ben. A big chance for who? The Browns? To get a guy that can’t beat out Andy Dalton? Nononononon. A big chance for the Bengals to steal some draft picks, good thing that didn’t happen

McCarron was the subject of trade rumors after he filled in for an injured Dalton last season. Cincy was waiting for the right offer and claimed Jeff Driskel off waviers with the intention of developing him if a deal did happen, which obviously didn't.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports there was a "disconnect" between the Browns' front office and coaching staff regarding Bengals QB A.J. McCarron.

Despite the disconnect, the Browns were ready to surrender second- and third-round picks for McCarron's services on Tuesday. The league office confirmed the deal was not confirmed because of a "paperwork issue." Truly unbelievable. The "disconnect" almost certainly stemmed from McCarron's ex-OC Hue Jackson overvaluing him in the eyes of the Browns' front office. Sashi Brown and Paul DePodesta are probably breathing a sigh of relief, while Jackson is likely fuming. The Browns' disastrous 1-23 record on Jackson's watch can hardly be laid at his feet, but it's seeming increasingly likely he won't be around to finish the (never-ending) rebuild.

Some reports that Browns sent signed copy of the deal to Bengals to sign. Bengals apparently signed then sent to league office... Without Browns signature attached?

Botched or not, the right thing for the Cleveland Browns happened. AJ McCarron is a low level game manager at best, and Cleveland has no offensive talent, anyway. His confidence would have been shot by the end of the season.

Profootballtalk.com reports Browns co-owner Dee Haslam went "nuclear" on the team's front office after it nixed Tuesday's failed A.J. McCarron trade.

Based on a collection of national and local reports on the topic, it appears as if Browns ownership has taken the side of Hue Jackson over the front office. Jackson spent time with McCarron in Cincinnati and was the driving force behind Tuesday's trade talks. Multiple reports also indicate the front office -- known to be at odds with Jackson -- was the driving force behind the trade not going through. Ownership will ultimately decide the front office's fate. At present, it's not looking good for Sashi Brown, Paul DePodesta, and company. Jackson appears to have won the power struggle, for better or (more likely) worse.
