Is anybody else noticing constant mispellings at many prominent websites? Jesus Christ it's terrible.

I think with the consolidation of media the last 25 years or so the need and demand for independent news has gone way up. A lot of these people aren't journalists and that's good and bad. There are some legit journalists among the independent news providers too though but also kind of like you alluded to another consequence of this is these people pretty clearly don't always have the money to hire an editor.
