Your Favorite Vocalist

Recommended Posts

If you had to pick one vocalist that is absolutely your favorite, who would it be? Post some videos, then outline your reasoning.

For me: David Nail

Reasons: I don't know of another vocalist who conveys emotions with such ease, and perhaps I am biased because he releases mostly sad, serious songs, and music for me is mostly therapeutic. That being said, his more upbeat material shows off his vocal abilities, too, because he often has to hit higher notes in those songs. This guy is just phenomenal. He does excellent covers, too--his cover of Train's "I'm About to Come Alive" was the title track to his first album, and he's also well known for his great cover of Elvis's "In the Ghetto." Perhaps my favorite cover is his cover of Glenn Campbell's "Galveston" from his album I'm a Fire. He's currently without a record label after 4 albums on MCA Nashville. I'm hoping he signs with Thirty Tigers and goes the independent route.

two guys come to mind immediately, and I'm not sure they could be much more different:

Trace Adkins:

I'm not sure I need to post any other examples, he's got such a smooth bass voice, I'm not sure there's anyone I could compare it to and that song showcases it better than any other. He's a country artist, which turns a lot of people off, and he does a lot of really weird songs, which turns off even more people, but when he's taking himself seriously nobody's better. I didn't post any other videos but I'd be happy to make some suggestions if anyone wants to check out more of his stuff, if you go through his singles you'll find yourself wading through some weird shit.

Brian McNight:

Just listen to the videos, the guy's incredibly skilled, I got to see him in concert last summer and it might have been the best concert I've been to.

I like the Weeknd personally. There is a particular reason which is that he has some darker themes to his music and I like how his voice juxtaposes with this.

I'd probably give Krauss my favorite for female vocalists, but there are so many good ones. In modern music, the biggest separation between men and women is that women have to be top of the line vocalists or they have no shot whatsoever, even if they are practically runway models.

Hard to say I have definitive favorite. Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth is definitely up there because he is one of the few vocalists that I can say I really love his harsh vocals (growls) and his clean vocals are perfect within Opeth's music.

I can say Ozzy, Bruce Dickinson, and Devin Townsend were all great sounding live AND they put on a hell of a show as entertainers.

Stevie Nicks is quite easily my favorite female vocalist and I am not sure it is close. I do dig Florence Welch, Lana Del Rey, and even Rihanna. Adele is very talented too. A lot more but those are the ones that come to mind.

Shoutouts to John Legend & Raphael Saadiq as well on the R&B front.

Definitely coming from a place of nostalgia growing up with my Dad, Karen Carpenter (from The Carpenters) has to be my favorite. I've never heard a singer emote like she can with such a diverse range and beautiful tone. I get goosebumps every time I hear her sing.

Its never just one. I prefer most of the ones who cant or dont actually sing. Just the balls to get up and do it

Iggy Pop.. you really need to watch this set by him if nothing else lol. 1979

Billy Bragg.. never cared much for him in 80s.. but I'm rediscovering the simplicity.

just him and his guitar most of the time.. Its because he's english that makes the voice at least unique to me lol

Fear, vocals-Lee Ving , before harmones in the milk started really affecting the youth of today. Gutsy east coast voice.

Sid Vicious, the more annoying, the better.

Bryan Ferry, on the more serious romantic side.
