  1. Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis is suspended for the first eight games of the regular season for his role in the team’s bounty program, but the suspension won’t keep him from meeting with Saints owner Tom Benson and other team officials.

Benson recently bought the NBA’s New Orleans Hornets and installed Loomis as the director of basketball operations, and the NFL has confirmed that during Loomis’s suspension he’ll be allowed to meet with Benson and anyone else associated with both the Saints and the Hornets. The only catch is that Loomis won’t be allowed to talk about the Saints: The league expects Loomis to deal only with his NBA duties while he’s suspended.

Of course, that’s going to be just about impossible to enforce. If the Saints, for instance, lose an offensive lineman to an injury in their season opener, and if Loomis meets with Benson the next day to talk about the Hornets, will the NFL have any way of knowing if Loomis also tells Benson the name of a free agent offensive lineman he thinks the Saints should sign?

Suspending a general manager for eight games was always an odd punishment. If the NFL really wanted to punish Loomis, suspending him for three days during the NFL draft would have been a much harsher punishment than suspending him for eight weeks at the start of the season. Suspending him for four games of the preseason would have been a harsher punishment than suspending him for eight games of the regular season, too: A general manager’s job is a lot more important during the time when the team is trimming its roster from 90 players to 53 than it is once the 53-man roster has been set. Yes, the eight-game suspension means Loomis won’t be around to consult on potential trades and waiver claims during the first eight weeks of the season, but for a general manager, a suspension during the offseason would have more teeth than a suspension during the regular season.

And now it turns out that even during Loomis’s suspension, he’s going to be in regular contact with the owner of the Saints. At a time when the players who were suspended for the bounty program are claiming they got a raw deal, Loomis’s punishment looks relatively minor.

Seems a little fishy to me. Why hire him for the NBA when he's a football guy?

  2. Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib escaped the law in Texas, but may still have a date with Judge Roger Goodell.

Charges of aggravated assualt with a deadly weapon against Talib were dropped Monday, before he was scheduled to go on trial next week, with a possible 20 year prison sentence if convicted.

But the NFL hasn’t ruled on whether it will discipline Talib for his involvement in the March 2011 shooting. League spokesman Greg Aiello told Stephen Holder of the Tampa Bay Times the league plans to review the case. Talib’s lawyer said the league requested a copy of the dismissal order.

Being suspended without a conviction is still possible, as Ben Roethlisberger’s case proved. But complicating Talib’s case is the fact this incident happened during the lockout, when Goodell arguably lacked the power to punish players in the absence of a collectively bargained agreement.

He might have a better chance if this was his first run-in with the law. Talib visited with Goodell following a 2009 arrest for hitting a cab driver (he agreed to pre-trial diversion), and was suspended one game.

  3. Despite not playing a down last season because of back problems, David Garrard is getting the first shot to be the Dolphins’ starting quarterback.

According to ESPN.com’s James Walker, the former Jacksonville starter worked with the first team at Dolphins minicamp Tuesday, with Matt Moore working with the second team. First-round pick Ryan Tannehill was with the third team.

Good for him. Would love to see him start in Miami.

  4. We are a better consistent team then u guys have ever been lol. Anyways u better be careful im the one whos better going on this board saying the Jags have a playoff team this year. I just been fucking with u in this thread is all.

LOL really? I'm a Jags fan and admit we have really set ourselves up for failure this upcoming season. Our draft was around getting Gabbert a weapon, drafting a punter, and beefing up a defense which hadn't really needed to. Our problem last year was the o-line. We haven't fixed that at all. I wouldn't be surprised if we started tanking for Barkley.

  5. One i was joking. Two Jags suck. I think i covered pretty much everything.. just like the tarps all over 90% of the Jags stadium during sundays.

We suck? WE SUCK?! Hey dude, where did your team go during the postseason? Oh yeah, HOME. We're just as bad as you guys are after all is said and done.

  6. Practicing against your own teammates all the time can get old, and practicing with other teams allows you to see different looks offensively and defensively that you wouldn't if you practice against your own guys.

Welcome to TGP btw! I'm a Sparty fan myself.

    Thanks.

  7. Where the FUCK are all these Jaguar fans coming from. Its like we got all their fans on this board now. All 10 of them...

    Anyways championship!

Where is CJ2K? Oh, right... Screwing your team up so badly you can't even get into the playoffs, lol....

  8. NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans have signed offensive lineman Jon Cooper, finally adding a veteran with playing experience to the competition at center.

The Titans announced the deal Wednesday.

Tennessee visited with five veteran centers in free agency without signing anyone. Kevin Matthews, son of Hall of Fame lineman and current Titans offensive line coach Bruce Matthews, had been working with the first-team offense until the return of veteran Eugene Amano in his recovery from knee and ankle surgeries.
