  2. Author: Sam Monson One of the hardest things in football to achieve is an evaluation of a running back’s performance independent of the blocking in front of him. Filtering out the play of the other ten guys on offense – as well as the coaching and playcalling – is incredibly difficult to do. Nevertheless, we’ve had a stab at it here at PFF. You may remember last season we ran an Elusive Rating article. In it, we broke down some interesting numbers from our database and concluded that Seattle’s Justin Forsett, in a limited role for the Seahawks, narrowly edged Jonathan Stewart as 2009’s most elusive back. This season, we’ve crunched the numbers again, and once more, they make for some interesting reading. Busting through contact Before we get to the magic Elusive Rating itself, we’re going to take a glance at some of the more basic stats included in the study. Last season, Chris Johnson not only topped the 2,000-yard rushing mark, but he notched 1,071 of those yards after first contact. Not only did no runner threaten the 2k barrier in 2010, but there was a corresponding fall in the top mark in yards after contact. Michael Turner led all rushers in yards after contact with 941 and he was the only player to break the 900-yard mark, compared to the four players that achieved the same figure last season. The 68.7% of Michael Turner’s yardage gained after contact is by no means a low figure, but it is good enough for only 15th in the NFL among qualifying rushers. None of the 14 players ahead of him, however, carried the ball more than Turner, and only Stephen Jackson (330) was within 112 carries of Turner’s 334. Many of the backs who rank highly in this category are third down specialists. Last season, Brian Leonard recorded what we thought was an astounding 82% of his yards after contact, playing the 3rd down role for the Bengals. This season, an entirely new benchmark was set. Mewelde Moore, playing a similar 3rd down role for the AFC Champion Steelers, recorded a ridiculous 97% of his yardage after contact. Moore put up 99 yards on 33 carries and 96 of them came after first contact. If you were carrying any doubt about the struggles of the Steelers’ O-line, that’s a figure that should help to convince you. When we posted on twitter asking for people to guess the player that led the league in yards after contact this season, we got more than a few responses saying LaGarrette Blount. While Blount wasn’t in the running (his 739 YCo ranked him 12th), it’s only because of his late entry into the lineup. Recording 73.4% of his yards after contact, more than any other player with over 200 carries, he almost certainly would have topped the list had he been starting for a full season. In 2009, Jamaal Charles registered 3.6 yards per carry after contact, a number Blount’s 3.7 topped, and Blount did it without the gift of track-sprinter speed that could turn a broken tackle at the line of scrimmage into an 80-yard footrace. As we’ll see later on, and if you didn’t know already, Blount had a heck of a season. The numbers for another much more heralded rookie weren’t so impressive. Jahvid Best managed just 1.8 yards per carry after contact, the worst mark among qualifying rushers, and just 54.3% of his yards came that way, which also ranked near the bottom. The Lions’ rookie found himself at the tail end of the table across the board as he struggled to have any kind of impact in his rookie season, hampered for much of it with injuries. Blount, on the other hand, was at the sharp end across the board. He led the league in forced missed tackles as a rusher with 50, four clear of any other HB, and only Fred Jackson, Adrian Peterson and Michael Turner leapfrog the Tampa Bay rookie when missed tackles in the passing game are included. PFF's 2010 Elusive Rating

Yeah, I don't really see it as overall ranking, but rather just one aspect of a RB's game. Where did you have Ahmad and Purple Jesus in your final rankings?

    facing the shitty realities

I'd like to post meatspin for all the times you trolled in the shoutbox, but even I'm not that much of a dick. Not sure how much to add, because I've never been in your situation. We do, however, have some guys here who have either played in college or are playing college football who might be of better assistance than I. With regard to football, just pretty have nothing great to add outside of what Phail (Duran4Ever) added. Don't THINK you have a shot at getting kicked off, KNOW you aren't and go out get it, if you really want it. Good luck!!!!
  5. By Gerry Fraley / Reporter gfraley@dallasnews.com | Bio 4:07 PM on Wed., Mar. 23, 2011 | Permalink Several Dallas Cowboys players have mentioned getting together with new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan to get a jump-start on his system. That apparently is a violation of NFL rules and put the Cowboys among of a group of five teams that have been fined by commissioner Roger Goodell for having contact with players during a "dead'' period. Miami, Cleveland and San Francisco are also believed to have violated the rule, which is not related to the lockout. Teams can have only limited contact with players until March 15, when off-season programs can begin. Like the Cowboys, each of those clubs has a new head coach or new coordinators. The NFL released this statement: "There have been rules in place for years that govern what is permissible prior to the start of the off-season program. ... Before the offseason program begins, players are permitted to use the Club's facilities on a voluntary basis subject to the following rules: (i) such players may not receive per diem payments or workout bonuses of any kind and may not be paid or reimbursed expenses for travel, board or lodging during this period; (ii) such players are not permitted to participate in organized workouts, practices or meetings of any kind; (iii) the Club's strength and conditioning coaches may not direct such players' individual workouts, but may supervise use of the weight room to prevent injury, correct misuse of equipment, etc.; (iv) such players may not be directed or supervised by position coaches during this period.'' 6. Yeah, I'm kinda like meh on it. It would suck for Dallas (not for me ) if they were fined an insane amount of dough, though (2 pts for post ending rhyme time) (two more).
  7. NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Butler's Matt Howard took a stroll down Bourbon Street on Tuesday night, experiencing a strip of restaurants, bars and hangouts known for lavish parties and excess. The senior forward knew within minutes that it wasn't his type of place. Too much flash. Too crazy. "It's not my personality, it's not what I like to do," Howard said. "For me, it's almost unnecessary. I'd rather stay away from that." Howard, much like the Bulldogs, is more of a stoic, hardworking Midwestern guy. And when eighth-seeded Butler faces fourth-seeded Wisconsin in the NCAA tournament regional semifinals on Thursday night, there will be a lot of that on the floor at New Orleans Arena. It's worked for both programs. Wisconsin has become one of the most consistent teams in the country, making its fifth run to the round of 16 in the past 11 seasons. Butler is in the midst of a second straight deep run in March that included a trip to the national championship game last season, where the Bulldogs lost to Duke. "They don't beat themselves so we're going to have to beat them," Wisconsin freshman Josh Gasser said. "That's a lot like how we play." Wisconsin (25-8) is the typical Big Ten team, with a suffocating defense and methodical offense that slowly wears opponents down. That's how the Badgers were able to slip past Kansas State in the second round with a 70-65 win, despite Jacob Pullen's 38 points. Jon Leuer led Wisconsin with 19 points in the game, but it was sophomore Mike Bruesewitz who became the poster child of the Badgers' success. The 6-foot-6 forward scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds off the bench, with his bright red, curly hair flying all over the court. Read more: ESPN
  8. NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Just like everyone else in college basketball, Florida is quite familiar with Jimmer-mania. Jimmer Fredette's production -- 28.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game -- is impossible to ignore. If anything, BYU's senior guard is getting stronger, scoring at least 30 points in six of his last seven games. But second-seeded Florida doesn't buy that third-seeded BYU will be a one-man team when they meet in the NCAA tournament regional semifinals Thursday night in New Orleans. The Gators know from experience. BYU beat Florida 99-92 in double overtime in a first-round game last season. Fredette scored 37 points, yet what really hurt the Gators was a career-game from reserve guard Michael Loyd Jr., who poured in 26 points. Now with a second chance, Florida's players say they have plenty of respect for all of the Cougars -- even if it's Fredette who is dominating the highlights. "The game plan isn't just to stop Jimmer," the Gators' Chandler Parsons said. "They've got a complete team. We had a taste playing against them last year and now we understand just how good they are. We don't have to watch film to understand that. They're strong and they execute." Florida is almost the antithesis of BYU, with multiple seemingly anonymous options who can hurt opponents during any given game. Four players average at least 11 points and the Gators often use a 10-man rotation. Read more: ESPN
  9. ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Connecticut flew clear across the continent for the next round of the NCAA tournament. San Diego State hopped in a bus and cruised 90 minutes up the interstate. Huskies coach Jim Calhoun and Aztecs coach Steve Fisher have been doing this long enough to realize miles don't matter at this point in the West regional -- not compared to the distance both teams already traveled this season to reach this unlikely stage. Two surprisingly successful schools with breakout superstars and respected bench bosses meet Thursday night at Honda Center, with the winner moving to the brink of the Final Four. "It's been a wonderful, wonderful journey that we've had," Fisher said before the Aztecs (34-2) practiced Wednesday. "I knew we were going to have a good team. I didn't know just how good we would be." Fisher's grateful sentiments mirrored the thoughts of Calhoun, a friend for several decades. While second-seeded San Diego State has won more games and moved deeper into the NCAA tournament than any team in school history behind star forward Kawhi Leonard, UConn's Hall of Fame coach has been thrilled by his freshman-laden lineup's growing maturity around star guard Kemba Walker for the Huskies (28-9), one of just two Big East teams left. Calhoun realizes both teams are playing with house money at this point, but it won't stop the third-seeded Huskies from pressing their luck in an intriguing intersectional matchup. "I'm happy. Elated," the notoriously dour New Englander deadpanned. "I can't tell you I wrote it down, because I usually try to write where I think we'll be at the end of the season. ... They have the most resilience of any team I've ever coached. We're playing the best basketball right now, and everything that could happen good, has happened good." The cross-country element of this matchup also intrigues both teams with the chance to face an opponent the players had scarcely thought about before last weekend. While UConn acknowledges it's peaking at the perfect time, San Diego State has its best chance yet to demonstrate its season-long excellence against a perennial power. "You see the rankings and you see us up there, but people don't really know much about us," Aztecs forward Tim Shelton said. "We're finally getting an opportunity to let people see what we're about. Our guys feed off that. We understand that we're seen as a mid-major, so people feel like (we) don't deserve it because (we) don't consistently play the same type of competition. But we've won 34 games. That's a whole lot of wins." San Diego State has talent and experience around Leonard, but no significant history of success at Montezuma Mesa. Aside from two losses to BYU, the Aztecs have been perfect, obliterating the school record for victories while reaching the round of 16 for the first time. Read more: ESPN

    Giants Interested In Ingram

Yeah, sounds like smoke screens like last season with Spiller....although if Ingram is there when we pick and he's the BPA (according to his board), I wouldn't doubt that Jerry would pull the trigger....I just don't see that scenario playing out....
  11. Posted by Evan Silva on March 23, 2011, 12:17 PM EDT Early in the offseason, Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley was a near-consensus favorite to be the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. Word has since leaked from Carolina that the Panthers are “not sold†on any of this year’s defensive linemen. NFL Network analysts Warren Sapp and Mike Mayock have gone on record to say they don’t even believe Fairley is this year’s best defensive tackle. If Fairley isn’t even the best player at his position, it would be illogical for the Panthers to take him first. ESPN director of college scouting Todd McShay took it a step further in a Wednesday morning conference call with the media. McShay, who previously described himself as “blown away†by Fairley’s March 8 Pro Day, now believes Fairley has the potential to be a colossal flop at the next level. “The more you watch Fairley on tape, the more worried you get he’ll be a bust,†said McShay, who also questioned Fairley’s work ethic and consistency. “He has a chance to be a bust.†McShay then recalled the recent history of defensive tackles in the draft. He called the percentage of busts at the position “shockingly high.†Like so many of this year’s draft-eligibles, Fairley is a polarizing prospect. While Gregg Doyel of CBSSports.com blames Fairley’s alleged fall down draft boards on media creations, McShay cites game film for his opinion of Fairley. McShay just liked Fairley a lot more earlier this month. Source: ProFootballTalk

    Carville vs Devaney

ESPN's Adam Schefter says Rams general manager Billy Devaney took offense to James Carville's comments to NFL owners comparing the Republican presidential field to the NFC West. An executive from another NFL team did tell me the Rams weren't all that amused by Carville's wisecrack. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello responded to Schefter's tweet by noting that both laughed and it was all in fun. If you know Devaney, however, it's easy to imagine him not letting such remarks slide. He's pugnacious and unafraid to speak his mind. Remember back in September 2009 when ESPN's Mark Schlereth, a player Devaney scouted years ago, said the Rams were in shambles? Devaney went on the radio and fired back with both barrels. He called Schlereth names and the team was well on its way to turning things around. The Rams went 1-15 that season, but they were indeed in the early stages of turning around the franchise. Source: ESPN
  16. YARLY. What's funny is PFT tries to make it sound like McShay was in love with him and flipped the switch all of a sudden. But in the original piece on ESPN Insider earlier this month, he had just as many concerns as props for Fairley after his Pro Day....

Ochocinco trying out for Soccer club

Posted by Michael David Smith on March 23, 2011, 12:45 PM EDT Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco, who’s looking for something to do (and something to keep his name in the news) during the NFL lockout, has begun his Major League Soccer tryout. Ochocinco began his four-day trial with Sporting Kansas City today. According to the Associated Press, Ochocinco was moving fluidly on the field while more than 40 media members watched him getting individual instruction from assistant coach Zoran Savic. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis has belittled Ochocinco’s soccer ambitions, in another sign that Ochocinco probably won’t be back in Cincinnati when (or if) the 2011 season begins. But Ochocinco seems to like spending time with Sporting Kansas City: He said on Twitter, “What an awesome place Kansas City is, just getting here and it feels like home already, superb hospitality.†Perhaps he’ll end up with the Chiefs. 18. Posted by Michael David Smith on March 23, 2011, 1:18 PM EDT The bloggers at ESPN.com recently voted on the Top 10 pass rushers in the NFL. One player who didn’t make the list is not happy about it. Redskins defensive end Brian Orakpo, who didn’t get a single Top 10 vote from anyone on the eight-person panel of voters, went on Twitter today and offered a profane reaction. “I seen some list rankin the top 10 pass rushers and left me off. F–K THEM im gonna kill the league next season,†Orakpo wrote (hyphens added by PFT). It’s easy to see why Orakpo, who has 19.5 sacks in his two NFL seasons, is disappointed that he didn’t make the list. On the other hand, Orakpo’s 8.5 sacks in 2010 ranked him 24th in the league. So it’s not unreasonable that he’s not considered one of the Top 10 pass rushers in football. Source: ProFootballTalk
