Update: Chiefs, Alex Smith do 4-year, $68M extension

At the risk of running this thing off topic, I disagree with the common assessment of the Flacco situation. They most certainly did have another option: Tell him to get real. He wasn't going to get $20 fucking million from anyone else. I'd have let him walk for that much. The snowball affect would have been so much different than it ended up being. Matt Ryan would not have asked for 20, Cutler would have gotten something much more reasonable, and Alex Smith would not be asking for 18+. Yeah, sure. The Ravens might have missed the playoffs last season, but... Oh, wait, that's right. They didn't make the playoffs anyway. In fact, I don't know if they'll make the playoffs with that bum again. The team has eroded around him, and no matter how much money he's making, he's not going to be able to carry them. For anything close to 20 million, he should be able to, which puts me back on topic. Alex wants 18, and he can't carry a team either. The only guys who should be making anything close to that in the NFL's current landscape are at the top: Rodgers, Brees, Brady, Manning, and... I feel like I'm missing someone, but it's not Alex Smith. That's my point. Still, I stand by what I said: I wouldn't want the Jay OR Joe show coming anywhere near KC. While Smith is not ideal, I'm ok with it. The thought of It doesn't make me physically ill.

Update: Chiefs, Alex Smith do 4-year, $68M extension

I can see your side of the argument. We can certainly agree to disagree. It is most definitely preference. I will remind you both though that the Ravens were reportedly seriously considering moving on from Flacco before he went all God mode in the playoffs and won the big game. I think we can all agree though that No matter where you put Smith in the QB hierarchy, he hasn't done anything to warrant an $18 mill a year contract.

Update: Chiefs, Alex Smith do 4-year, $68M extension

You're right about one thing:the eye test does tell it all. It tells me that one guy is a cry baby who is at his worst when the stakes are at their highest. It tells me that one is wildly inconsistent and completely lost at times, when failure breeds more failure. It tells me that one guy is calm, cool, and collected, rarely making costly mistakes. I know which I'd those three I'd rather have. Now don't think I'm beating the drum for Alex Smith. I started earlier in the thread that he's in no way a top tier guy, but the other two warm bodies under center are in no way worth the money they're getting paid and ARE the whole reason that we're even having this discussion. You talk about not taking arbitrary stats or team success into consideration when judging these QB's, but isn't that exactly what their teams did? Flacco got paid because his team won the super bowl. Cutler got paid because, well, I'm really not sure. Must be that flashy arm and winning personality. It sure ain't stats or success though. In the words of Tuna Fish, "Don't get caught up in glamour and glitz and camera tricks." These QB 's use special affects.

... And Cutler and Flacco don't benefit from the very same things that Smith has? The bears and ravens haven't had strong defenses and top 5 backs? Just because they throw the ball downfield more often, that doesn't make them better players. It just means that they take more risk. Flacco costs his team ads much as he brings to the table, and Cutler even more so with his inability to stay on the field factored in. How'd Jay and Joe look in the playoffs last season?

Update: Chiefs, Alex Smith do 4-year, $68M extension

The reason that I say he's better than those two Is because he doesn't have many OMG bad games. His ceiling is pretty close to theirs when he hits it, but his floor is not in the basement. He doesn't have the rocket arm like those guys, but you're probably not going to see too many 3-4 pick performances from him either. Jay and Joe are one bad, forced throw away from completely imploding and costing the team a win. Alex isn't that guy. He's pretty blah sometimes, but the LULZ don't happen all that often. Plus he excels at spreading the ball around and not just throwing to Brandon Marshall for his entire career. Smith is also more mobile than both if those guys, and he's tougher than at least one of them. I think his future in KC has a lot to do with D-Bowe tbh. If Bowe comes to play this year, watch out. If he doesn't though, it might be a looooong year for Mr. Smith.

    Game of Throws: Rookie QBs

I went with Teddy for some of the same reasons everyone else stated , so I won't go back through all that. I will say though that I have long thought Teddy was the best QB in this draft. Him landing where he did is just a bonus. It couldn't have played out any better for him really. I do not concur that Teddy is the only one who's going to see significant playing time though. I think Manziel has an equally good chance of being at least a week 4 starter in Cleveland, as does Bortles in Jacksonville. I don't really know how they'll fair, but I do think that if Gordon ends up skating on this weed thing that Johnny—with full awareness that he's 100% BOOM or BUST— is going to make a run at OROY with Teddy.

Andre Johnson a No-Show at Texans OTAs

It's very, very common for veterans to miss OTA's. It happens all the time, every year. The ONLY reason that this is even a story is because of a question asked by the press and answered by Andre. He's doing something that is common, but he's not happy while he's doing it so he's crybaby? Pls. :gtfo: He has NOT asked for a trade, he is NOT holding out for more money, and he is NOT badmouthing his teammates. What exactly is the problem here? He's not showing up for OTA's? He said he's not happy about a rebuilding process? He said that in his experience, he's not a fan of regime changes? Yeah, what an asshole. OMG, he spoke up about his displeasure with something that is going on at the top of the company he works for. I'm sure no one hear has EVER done anything so egregious. Let me know when this guy does something that actually effects anyone at all.

I can't really see them letting him walk unless he shits the bed and they have the chance to draft a franchise QB. QB's don't just hit the market every day, like you said. My only fear is that Fat Andy has been drinking his own Cool-Aid and thinks that he can roll with Murray and Daniels and make it work because they're QB's and he's Andy friggin Reid. That could go very, very badly. See: Kevin Lolb

    NFL To Revamp Drug Policy

Once they get this done, I really think they should go back and make it retroactive for Gordon, give him time served, and move on with the season. I realize that it doesn't work that way, and other past offenders would get butt hurt. Still, I'd like to see it happen.

Brandon Marshall signs $30M deal on 'The View'

He accomplished three things with this signing: 1. He got PAAAIIID, 2. He gave charitably to fight mental health, 3. He was seen in public with four women who he wasn't beating the crap out of. Way to go B-Marsh. All jokes aside though, he deserves a payday. The guy just flat out produces, and furthermore, they should make Cutler pay him a portion of his salary for Marshall bailing his busted ass out all of the time.

Sarge, read the first line of his post. This was why I never even bothered addressing that post. "I think Charles is the better overall player and more talented, obviously has more YPC and yards." He ended that discussion before it even got started. I like ya BC. I really do, but sometimes you should read what you've typed before you click on post. It would save time and lulz.
  15. Murderin' Ray is a national hero. Woman-beating B-Marsh is heralded on THE VIEW for throwing money at mental health. Warren Sapp paralyzed a guy with a cheap shot and publicly refused to even say sorry or see if he'd be ok. Worst of all, though... Josh Gordon... Smokes... WEEEEED MAAAAANNNN!!!!!

    Top 10 RB

Yeah, I guess I forgot about all of the HOFers that Charles has had taking the focus off of him. lol I don't think anyone is arguing that A.P. doesn't impact the game. That would be ridiculous. What I am saying is that Charles impacts the game in more ways than does A.P., and he runs the ball nearly as well. For that I give him the nod. I want a guy who gets more than 5 ypc and can also kill teams catching out of the backfield. They both run hard. They both finish runs. They're both home run threats. One is a little more sure-handed than the other and is a threat catching the ball too. I want that guy. Sure you can. Peterson played with Favre in arguably his best season, he's always had a killer D backing him up, and there's no doubt that his o-line has been superior to Charles'. He had a really good spell back as well. As for his Wolverine-like healing act, that's just an insane season. It's one of the best seasons in history. That's awesome, but this is a current list of the current RB hierarchy. I'm not using the last however many years of stats as the end all be all factor in my decision on who I would rather have right now, today. Taking everything into account, I'm going with Charles. The guy is automatic for 1,800 yards a year, he can hurt teams in multiple ways, and last season he was the best "closer" in the NFL. There's a reason that the Chiefs didn't lose many 4th quarter leads with Charles suited up.

Correcting some misinformation on the Panthers

He's not over 5 ypc, either. He has a lofty average of 4.8, which is really nice, but it's not over 5. There are only two RB's with over 1,000 carries with that distinction: Jim Brown (#2 all time) and Jamaal Charles (the champ is here.) After that, there's about a handful of HOFers with 5 flat.

    Top 10 RB

I Won't argue with any of that, and that's why I made a point to say that it's a real pick your poison/personal preference scenario. At this point I just feel like no matter which of those three guys you place at no. 1, you're pretty much justified. I watch Charles every week, and as a Chiefs fan I'm probably a little biased toward the guy that I watch shred defenses all the time despite everyone knowing where the ball is going. AP is obviously doing the same thing. I pick Charles over him because with someone finally uTilizing all of his different skills last season, when teams keyed in on the run, they just started calling pass plays and dump routes for Charles. He got over 100 yards and a td in each of the first 7 games I believe, and in some of those games the run game was thwarted. In the rare games where AP gets stopped in the backfield early and often, the Vikings are screwed. There is no plan B involving him. If you can't turn around and hand him the ball, he's pretty much a non factor. At that point he hurts the team, and I'm aware that there's no paying game to really take any pressure off of him. Charles has pretty much played in the very same scenario since he came into the league, and he adapts very well. Also both of them have an inexplicable habit of dropping the ball at times, but I'll just never forget that NFCCG where AP fumbled at least the times and cost the Vikings a super bowl birth. All anyone remembers about that game is Favre ending his last run with a ill advised int, but if Peterson just hangs onto the ball they skate to victory. Long time ago yes, but it's just one example. Charles fumbles occasionally, but he doesn't make a habit of it and isn't known for it.

Correcting some misinformation on the Panthers

Yeah, Jon Baldwin made circus catches all offseason his first two years in the NFL, and that was in actual camp. He's now buried somewhere on the depth chart, I believe. I'm not saying that Benjamin will be a bust or anything, but I've learned not to believe the hype that comes out of camp, especially regarding pass catchers. He's probably not even wearing pads yet.

'Shady' thinks he's the best RB

He SHOULD think this. He's one of the very best in the game. If he went out there and said, "Awww shuuucks. That thurr AP guy shurr is better than me," I'd never want to hear him speak again. You don't get as good as he is by having a second-best attitude. I have two guys over him, but not by much at all, and I wouldn't want to argue my case with someone who has him ranked ahead of my other two guys. It's really just about preference and splitting hairs at the top three spots of the current RB hierarchy imo.
  23. lol Thanks. Gotta give thanks to Raz for posting that gif in the shoutbox. It's just hilarious.

    Browns state of the franchise

The story coming out of camp is that the HC is impressed with the quickness that Johnny Cleveland is grasping the playbook. That sounds like groundwork being laid for a week one rookie starter.
