    2012 Buccaneers season thread

This loss is on the offense big time. Freeman missed throws he shouldn't have, and WR's yet again seemed to mess up their routes. Sullivan had quite a few calls that baffled me, like throwing the ball over and over when we were well ahead. Before that he ran the ball several times, which I thought would ultimately lead to a pass because that's what good coordinators do. Nope, run again on 3rd down while the Giants stacked the front, completely expecting it. People are likely to talk all week about the defense giving up 604 yards and 41 points, but they didn't even let the Giants tie the game until the last 7 minutes, and a huge chunk of the yards and the rest of their points came in the last 4 minutes of the game. The defense played pretty well when you look at the game as a whole. For 53 minutes they allowed 1 TD and 4 FG's while getting 3 INT's, all of which turned into TD's. Yes they didn't stop the Giants at the end of the game, but they were the only reason why we were ahead in the first place. The offense didn't do their part by getting first downs and running out the clock. It was just a cluster fuck of bad decisions and dropped passes. The Giants definitely deserves the hard fought win. They played through most of the game poorly but pulled it all out when they needed to. Huge props to Nicks and Cruz for yet again showing why they should be considered one of, if not the best WR tandem in the league. Nicks abused Talib so bad he'll probably end up with PTSD from it. I expect the team to play better next week. After doing so well against the Panthers some of the more immature guys may have gotten a little too full of themselves and lost some of the focus they started the season with. Foster and Barron seemed to have had a worse game but that could just be because they went up against more talent overall. Regardless, the offense needs to work on their issues or this is going to be a long season.

    Bucs @ Giants

I think this will be a pretty close game as long as the Bucs show the discipline on defense they did last week. If they play their cards right the Bucs should be able to take advantage of the Giants secondary. They'll have a tough time fighting against the Giants pass rush, so it will all depend on how well we run the ball. The Giants LB's aren't that good, so with some solid blocking Doug Martin could break off some runs and force a safety down, which would allow Freeman to make plays down field pretty easily. Although I can definitely see the Giants pressuring Freeman into making mistakes he didn't against the Panthers, so an INT or fumble from him will probably happen, which they can't really afford with the Giants offense. As far as the Giants offense goes, I see 20 carries and around 35 passes, pretty similar to last week. The coaches finally have our front 7 the way we've needed it to be, healthy and disciplined. Lavonte and Foster have impressed me with their ability to stop the run, Bennett is easily the best at it on the team and has been the last 2 seasons, and Gerald & Clayborn didn't leave room for anyone to get out of the Panthers backfield. For the Bucs this game will come down to how well they play the Giants pass. The Giants have a mediocre O-line, but Eli can be very good at avoiding the pass-rush. My biggest worry is them moving both Nicks and Cruz around to keep Wright off his game, as Aqib really only covers one side. Even if Hakeem is covered well by Wright, he'll still get the ball because he's just that good. I can see him really struggling to stay on Cruz because of his route running. It should be a fun game to watch.
  4. I like the thought of John Lynch as a DB coach. I also feel Chad Pennington would make a good offensive minded coach.

    Week 1 Rankings

Says the guy with the Chiefs at #16 under the excuse of injuries and the Vikings #26 below teams that put on a much shittier showing. You seriously think the Lions are a worse team than the Chiefs or Chargers? The Super Bowl champ Giants have injuries but you didn't let that keep you from putting them #13, even though they lost just like they did in week 1 of last season. Do you seriously think they're a worse team than the Redskins and Jets? Why? Because the Redskins beat on a depleted Saints defense and the Jets beat an overrated Bills defense? The Sanchize is going to fail this season like he has every other. The Saints or Steelers likely won't be finishing below the top-12, but these are week 1 rankings. Bware seems to have made his based more on what he seen in week one while everyone else put more stock into how last season went, which kind of defeats the purpose of doing weekly rankings. If you don't like it don't bother making a ranking thread after the first week and do it after we've seen teams play for a few weeks. I guarantee you some teams that looked great in week 1 are going to look like dog shit in weeks 2, 3, and 4.
  6. This is idiotic. It's not like they can't find someone else to come in. The guy did them a favor and they should consider it as such when people do this. If he's willing to say all that to get out of jury duty, he's likely the type to just not give a fuck. Do you really want him voting for whether or not someone goes to prison?

    Week 1 Rankings

No kidding. It's week one power rankings, they're all going to look ridiculous by the end of the season. It's not so egregious putting a team that got beat down by a rookie QB and a rookie RB below a team that won their game against the Jaguars, who has an improving offense and very underrated defense.

    Biggest Week 1 Surprise/Upset?

I was surprised the Redskins put 40 points on the Saints with a rookie QB and a 6th round rookie RB.

Your opinion of the replacement refs?

A lot of people are saying that they make calls and mess up just like the regular refs, and that's true, but the difference is the sheer number of times they've screwed up, and I saw some really obvious penalties that I never seen the old refs screw up on. I will say one thing though, the old refs always threw flags for bullshit penalties that shouldn't have been called. Every single week last season I listened to NFL radio and they would talk about multiple penalties that were called that either didn't happen and the refs threw the flag "just in case" or they happened but it was something like holding way away from the play which they pretty much never call. A part of me likes that I didn't see that in the few games I watched this week, and I haven't heard complaints in that regard on the radio either, I just wish they'd stay more consistent and call it even for both teams. Although that's something last years refs didn't do either.

How good (or bad) is Joe Flacco

I thought last year he was around 14th and when the season is over I'll probably be saying the same thing. He gets a lot of flack for things that honestly aren't his problem, like WR's not knowing how to run a route or an OC that's usually shit at game planning. We've seen the guy play in games that made him look like a top-10 QB, but we've also seen him put up some stinkers, which tells me he has all the physical tools to be an elite passer but he isn't as mentally strong as the best QB's in the league. He can be the 6th best QB one week and the 24th best the next, and for that he stays in the average to above-average range in my mind.

I'm super excited about Lavonte. He's so fast and makes quick decisions. He's made some rookie mistakes but that's expected and they've been at a minimum. What's most impressive is they've already made him the play-caller on defense.

    Football Banter

Haven't had much banter going around in recent years, as the Bucs haven't really been good, but there was plenty of it being tossed around as a kid/teenager from '99-'04. It was always taken well.

    Panthers @ Bucs

He didn't seem to be slacking at all, but the Panthers had some really good coverage on him most of the game. It looked like all of his catches came off of hook routes.

Forte unhappy missing red zone carries

I'm sure he probably has bonus money in his contract for reaching a certain number of TD's, as many players do.

    Week 1 Surprises

Most of it's already been said. Bucs run D was shockingly good considering how they've played the last several years. The Jets offense played better than anybody thought they would. The Rams put up a good fight. Redskins O was fantastic under RGIII. Certainly a change from what they put on the field last season. Kevin Kolb scored a TD.
  16. When the Bucs came out strong for the first time in more than a year, going up 13-0 I was like Then the Panthers scored a TD But I enjoyed how DeAngelo Williams was totally like In the end it all went well, so tonight I'll be all

    Panthers @ Bucs

Bucs showed a lot of strength in the run D and pass rush. Offense started out really strong but played pretty average the rest of the game. Communications among the secondary and LB's needs to be worked on, and of course the right side of the O-line was pretty shitty without Davin Joseph. All together happy with what I seen from the team, I just hope they can keep it up against non-division foes as well. That was a weakness for us early last year.

    Nicks or V-Jax?

V-Jax has the much better match-up, I'd roll with him.

    Panthers @ Bucs

I think the Panthers D will be better this year, and the Bucs WR's outside of Vincent still don't know how to run a damn route. Our D looks better than they were early last season, so hopefully they can put up a fight against such a run heavy; deep ball offense. I honestly see the Panthers winning in a lowish scoring game. 17 13:

    The Official Buccaneers Offseason Thread

I hope they don't plan on Miller taking a ton of snaps. He's done well during training camp before just to fall off during the season.
  21. Rice never gave up on his routes, sorry, but Moss isn't on his level. Instead of nitpicking try to focus on the point, which is that as football players they are very comparable. He only had Moss for 3 seasons and he had more success without him anyway.

Tanard Jackson reinstated after two years

You know you're a retard when smoking pot means more to you than earning millions playing football. If not for his troubles in Tampa he'd have a nice contract right now.
  23. If I have to pick I'd obviously say Montana because of his Super Bowl accomplishments, but in reality I think they're equally as good as passers. A human can only be so good and they both worked hard enough to reach the top of the NFL mountain. You can come up with reasons why Brady has it easy in today's NFL but I also think people downplay how much is asked of an NFL QB these days as well. Superbowl victories is a poor way to compare an individuals ability, as football is easily one of, if not the most team oriented game there is. Sure Brady lost two Super bowls and threw INT's in them, but he also hasn't had a consistent, solid-to-great defense every year, and he's never had anything close to the greatest WR of all time playing with him.

NFL will open regular season with replacement refs

The least they can do is give season ticket holders some money back since they're devaluing the experience by being a bunch of cheap assholes. These replacement refs not only don't have the skills to keep up with the speed of the game, but even worse they don't even know the rules. They've had to be corrected after trying to make calls based on high school or college rules that don't even pertain to the NFL.
  25. For the Bucs: Right side of the O-line - Especially a concern after Davin Joseph got put on IR. WR route running - Apparently the big reason why Freeman seems to be "struggling" in the pre-season is due to poor WR route running, which was the same issue as last season. Certainly a concern considering how things went last year.
