Favre4Ever+ 4,476 Posted June 24, 2012 Closer Jonathan Papelbon offered to pay teammate Jim Thome $5,000 for saving the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday. Thome hit a pinch-hit home run leading off the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Phillies over the Tampa Bay Rays 7-6 after Papelbon blew his first save chance in 18 tries this season. Papelbon said he told Thome in the on-deck circle that he would give him $5,000 if he hit a homer. Papelbon said he wrote the check in the clubhouse. Thome, however, told the Philadelphia Inquirer that he hadn't received any payment. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8089807/philadelphia-phillies-jonathan-papelbon-writes-jim-thome-5k-check-walkoff Kind of a funny story. Although not sure why Thome is denying it ... Unless he declined the check, I suppose. And only 5,000? What a cheapskate. ha
SteVo+ 3,702 Posted June 25, 2012 Kind of a cool gesture by Papelbon. Just goes to show his mentality as a closer is to save 100% of his opportunities, which at $12.5 million per year, he better fucking do. I was at a party during this game, and Thome's homer rejuvenated the whole place after the blown save deflated it. Was pretty cool.
