Reports on Thursday night indicated that quarterback Seneca Wallace would not play in the 49ers’ preseason finale before being cut by the team.

Wallace will be one of the players sliced from the roster as the 49ers make their way to 53 players, but the decision wasn’t just about what the 49ers wanted to do at the position. Coach Jim Harbaugh said after the game against the Chargers that Wallace told him Thursday morning that he was calling an end to his NFL career and didn’t travel to San Diego as a result.

“It’s something that was his decision,” Harbaugh said, via Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. “He felt strongly about it. I don’t talk people out of that. I’ve never seen it done on game day, but I wish him well.”

Wallace ends a career that started as a fourth-round pick in 2003 with 62 career games and 21 career starts. He was 452-of-764 as a passer for 4808 yards, 31 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. He also ran for one touchdown.

The 49ers now have Colt McCoy and B.J. Daniels backing up Colin Kaepernick.
