  1. Calvin Johnson

    Larry Fitzgerald

    Brandon Marshall

    Dez Bryant

    Julio Jones

I think those guys will make it.

Bryant is probably the only guy I put a ? by. We know what he's capable of, but he's been so hit and miss. Just a hint of stability on that offense throws him into the next tier, imo.

  2. Offense

    Lesean Mccoy

    Jason Peters

    Evan Mathis

    Defense

    Fletcher Cox

Brandon Graham - May be a reach, but he had a great performance in his limited opportunities. Think he has the potential and will transition to 3-4 well.

No receivers? Do you think that's because of the new scheme or something else?

  3. There was no offense meant by that. It just made me curious enough to look.

I believe the supposed weak SOS might be overblown. They have to play all three AFC teams that they lost to in 2012 and the division should be better than it was a year ago. In any case, repeating a 13 win season is rare, and seeing "no challenges" in the entire AFC is foolish.

There will certainly be challenges, but few teams are as equipped in the AFC to deal with them as the Broncos are...at least right now on paper. Come Kickoff, everything changes.

  4. Obviously.....they are the better quarterbacks. Good, clutch QB no doubt but unless you think rings define a quarterback...Eli < Marino, Peyton.

He doesn't. He placed Bradshaw near the bottom of the list...he was 4-0 in the SB. Unfortunately, performance in the playoffs DOES define QB's to some extent. Marino and Peyton could put Eli to shame in the regular season, but both have mediocre records in the post-season. Trust me, as a Phins fan it's a hard pill to swallow.

  5. Read a Phinsider article that got me thinking about who on our team might have a shot at the Pro Bowl...the one that occurs in a vacuum where talent is rewarded over popularity.

Anyway, going over our projected starting roster I saw a great deal of names with slight to great potential. One of those feel-good homer moments. Don't judge me.

Let's go with Tiers...1-3. 1 is great potential...3 is the dark horse.

    Tier 1

    Cameron Wake

    Mike Wallace

    Reshad Jones

Caleb Sturgis (if the hype about his leg and accuracy are true)

Vonta Leach* (purely a projection based on if we get him)

    Tier 2

Ryan Tannehill (a crowded list to fight through)

    Brian Hartline

    Dustin Keller

    Randy Starks

    Paul Soliai

    Jonathan Martin

    Mike Pouncey

    Tier 3

Lamar Miller (highly unlikely, but I can dream)

Brandon Gibson (depends on how well Ryan spreads it around)

Brent Grimes (has to stay healthy)

Dannell Ellerbe (new face - new scheme)

Dion Jordan (not even certain how he'll be used)

Richie Incognito (depends on how well he blocks for Miller)

  6. But I felt it was worth looking into when I read that line about "the rule of persistence."

Eh, I was just referring to the minimal changeover that occurred within the starting roster. Don't know much about the coaching staff, but overall they don't seem to have changed too much from the inside.

Something else I hadn't considered at the time was the projected SOS, which has Denver with the easiest slate of games this year.

  7. Who's angry? You insult one of the greatest QB's ever to play the game. Call him Unclutch and I am showing a lack of respect.

I get negative rep (which I could give 2 $hits about) because I disagree or post my own comments.

If you don't give a shit about negative rep, why do you mention it every time you get it? No one cares that you don't care.

It's funny...I went back over my post and didn't find one mention of Unitas. I wasn't disagreeing with what you said about him. I was calling you out for being way off base on your analysis of the 2009 NFC Title game and for being a dick to a respected member of the boards (which is probably why you got negged, genius) who probably put a good deal of work into that project. Zach may be a wise ass, but talking out of his ass isn't one of his regular hobbies around here. He's one of the smarter posters you'll get to know. Doesn't mean he isn't wrong on occasion.

If you disagree with his results (which he caveated from the beginning that some of it was opinion-based), then change your tampon and create your own list with the almighty Unitas at the top. But I have news for you...this isn't the 50's and 60's anymore, and quarterbacks with better overall resumes and talent than him have come along since he hung the cleats up. Blame it on the evolution of the NFL or whatever else you want. If you don't want to accept that, then it's your ignorant burden to bear.

You should be happy that he got included in Zach's list, over the countless number of QB's who have played the game since it was invented.

  8. Myth: Marino had no running game.

Cold, Hard Football Facts: Marino joined Miami at a time when it had a reputation of being the best ground team in football. In fact, the year before Marino was drafted, the Dolphins made it all the way to the Super Bowl on the strength of a great running game and great defense.

In Marino's rookie year, 1983, the Dolphins racked up 2,150 yards on the ground. In 1984, Marino set single-season records with 48 touchdowns and 5,084 yards passing. The Dolphins still managed 1,918 rushing yards and averaged 4.0 yards per carry.

It would be disingenuous to say that the Dolphins were a great running team later in Marino's career. Of course, much of that can be attributed to too few rushing attempts and a misguided faith placed in Marino's arm.

But consider this: The New England Patriots went 17-2 and won the Super Bowl last year while averaging a woeful 3.4 yards per rushing attempt. The Dolphins averaged more than 3.4 yards per rushing attempt 14 times in Marino's 17 seasons. In other words, Marino's Dolphins ran the ball more than well enough to win Super Bowls.

    The Marino Mythology

Found it...although it was more like a decade ago than a couple years lol. Time flies.

And while I was diggin for that one, I found 2 other articles that seemed applicable to the "clutch" discussion.

NFLN's Top 10 Clutch QB Analysis

    Elway Conspiracy

    Some good reads.

  9. [/size]

The Marks brothers were a pretty damn good duo at WR for a decade until Mark Clayton was replaced by Irving Fryar for the 1993 season. :yep:You're right the Dolphins running game during Marino's tenure was always pretty shitty.

Edit: lulz then in '93 they got another Mark at receiver.

Interesting that you and Zach bring that up. CHFF had an article about this a couples years back, presenting an argument against the usual defenses as to why Marino never got a ring. When It comes to Dan I can become a bit of a homer, but the facts presented were eye opening to say the least. The numbers showed (at least how they presented them) that Marino actually had solid run support through most of his best years. If I manage to find the article I'll post it.

  10. It shames me to admit how little I know of players outside of Clemson, but it is what it is I guess  .

That said, I'm excited to see how Boyd handles the loss of Hopkins. Watkins is now the big man on campus and will have to bounce back from what was a quiet year, at least for him. Boyd in general strikes me as a top 10 pick...probably an even blend of value and necessity, but I still think he's better than any of the guys who left the board this year. He needs to improve his pocket presence and some of the timing throws, but I like him for a big year in the ACC.

Clowney is the only other guy I've followed with any regularity. Such a freak. I wouldn't mind seeing him suit up in Phins colors, but after drafting Jordan we probably won't be addressing that position.

  11. People are just disregarding/ignoring the circumstances as if they don't matter and keep running to the raw numbers. They don't tell the entire story. The stats within stats breaks it down and reveal what the situation was. The situation was that Luck was being utilized as if he was an elite QB. He was asked to throw 627 times, throw more deep passes than anyone else in the league, behind a horrible offensive line, had no running game, and a bad defense. How does none of that play a factor? In all actuality, The Colts ARE a bad team outside of Luck and Wayne if you take a real look at their situation. They were 2-14 last season. The only substantial change was at QB. Bad team, extremely unfavorable play calling, elite work load and he still won games. He's not elite so having that elite work load won't do justice for his raw numbers but he carried that load and took that bad team to the playoffs enduring those circumstances. There's no downplaying or disregarding those factors.

You certainly have my curiosity at this point...time to break out the NFL Rewind ;)

  12. What a crock of garbage that is. Unitas was the originator of the 2 minute offense. Obviously you never saw him play. Clearly talking out your ass.

Angry much? Respect goes a long way on these boards. Try to show some.

I find it funny that Brees is #3 with 1 Super Bowl victory and being in that game was because the poor officiating in the NFC Title game.

    dwight-schrute-false-cropped.jpg?w=490

There were indeed some questionable calls in that game, not least of all the Pierre Thomas TD that should have been ruled down shy of the EZ. But that's Childress' fault for not challenging...it isn't like he didn't have the chance to. Besides, Peterson neutralized that score with one of his own on the very next drive.

In all actuality, the Saints making the SB has more to do with the 10,000 things the Vikings did to lose the game than bad officiating. Just a quick glance at the ball control numbers tells you nearly everything you need to know. It shouldn't have been close. Between the lucky breaks that didn't get cashed in (including a RZ fumble following a muffed punt recovery), horrible overthrows, blown advantages, and late game turnovers (including Favre's classic across-the-body interception a la 2007 NFCCG against NY), the only people to blame for the Vikings not making it that year are the Vikings.

But that in no way minimizes how Brees played. He did what he could with what that stingy Vikings defense gave him, and he did it very well. Most importantly, he didn't cost his team the game with bad decisions. Favre cannot say the same thing.

    Whatever dude.

    Precisely. Try again next time.

  13. That isn't a bad deal I suppose. More in the Giants favor in my opinion. It will be interesting to see what happens with Nicks. I think this is his contract year along with J.P.P's.

Giants are in a pretty good situation. I think either one of them are trade material, although this re-signing makes that quite a bit more unrealistic for Cruz than it does for Nicks.

  14. Went the easy route and split it down the middle, because I have no idea lol. I think Luck will be better this year. But the lucky breaks may not fall his way this time around, so he has to make better decisions. But the comeback drives are still hard to ignore.

  15. Yeah, the NFC West is the best division in football, with a St. Louis team that is mediocre at best now, and a perennially terrible Cardinals team in it. I think there are several other divisions that can make a better case.

On topic, Seattle will get 10-11 wins IMO.

You're right about the Cards, although time will tell whether or not the ever-so-slight upgrade in Palmer is enough to breathe life back into Fitzgerald's career and free up space for the running game, among other things they seemed to at least marginally address in the OS. The Rams, good or bad, were scrappy within their own division, making them a pretty easy pick for trap games this year.

And the other 2 teams are bona fide Super Bowl caliber teams...not just contenders or dark horses. I can easily see either one of those teams lifting the trophy at season's end. Which other divisions can boast 2 teams like that, much less one?

Speaking of the record, I think it will be 12-4, to compensate for the fact they aren't perfect. As BC said, injuries could dictate a couple more losses worst case. I'm interested to see how much more leeway Wilson gets, and what Harvin brings to an already dynamic offense. And that defensive front is going to be disgusting. As if Sherman and Browner didn't have a field day last year.

  16. I'll use the rule of persistence and say the same as last year. Not much seems to have changed internally. I don't think too many teams are on the same offensive talent level in the AFC (the addition of Welker will add another challenge), and I think they have more than enough on D to keep them tough.

  17. Brady's my 2nd greatest QB ever.

Manning would probably be somewhere around the 8 to 10 range.

I'm going to guess Montana is your #1, but I'm interested to know who the other 6-8 QB's are on your list that beat a 4-time MVP.

Statistically, they're pretty evenly matched. But Brady has been markedly better in the postseason. So Brady.

This is the main reason I'll say Brady as well. It is interesting to note how easily Manning transitioned to another team and helped turn them into AFC favorites that same year (although they did still lose). Brady will never play for another team, so we'll never know if he could do the same. I'm guessing he could, but it's hard to say.

  18. I thought Tebow said he was willing to play whatever the team needed him to?

I don't recall that, but I also didn't follow every one of his comments either. He seemed pretty dead set on playing QB. Could be he switched mentalities towards the end when he realized he wasn't going to get much more than Wildcat and Punt plays.
