5 Mistakes Most Rookies Will Make

To that point last year showed a lot of the rookies true colors. Last summer it was a lockout and players were forced to use their own steam to get together and start learning. Typically after you are drafted you can go get a playbook that day. But last year forced the rookies to either say "Hey, I'm apart of the team now lets get to work" Or "I'm rich! Let's party!" This was one of the few things I didn't mind about the lockout. You found out who really wanted it.

Choose your Head Coach and Coordinators

Let me take... HC: Belichick...I'm taking him for some reasons most people aren't pointing out. As a head coach yes you have to have the football know-how, but you are also the ultimate manager. As far as taking care of a team no one does it like The Hoodie. I LOVE the way he prepares his team to play in ANY situation offense or defense he has them ready and he has them thinking. As a HC you are the motivator, he may not be a big speech guy as far as I've seen but whatever he does he has his team playing hard FOR HIM. And lastly as said by others he just has the eye for talent to fit what he wants to do. A coach with a set scheme is amazing (as you have seen over the years) he just finds players that have the skill set to fit in to his system and it runs like a machine. OC: Sean Payton....He knows offense simple and plain. DC: Rex Ryan...The old power mouth. Honestly I feel if you take away all the extra duties as a HC so he focuses on only defense you will see what made him a hot coach back in Baltimore. He is a monster of a defensive guru and by the way I'll take his brother Rob as an assistant.

5 Mistakes Most Rookies Will Make

Good read. Summed up in one phrase "Mo money, Mo problems"

    Seahawks QB Competition

One thing I wanted to add...A lot of guys are citing the fact that Seattle has paid Flynn $10M already as a reason to why he will start. I agree he will start as stated before...but look at Kolb in Arizona he got paid BUT it is very likely Skeleton can take that starting job from him. Just because you have the money doesn't mean you will get an extra check in the positive column. Financially it makes sense, but not always how it works out.

    Seahawks QB Competition

Do you believe there really is a 3-way battle? Who will win the starting job? And how many wins you got for the Seahawks this year?
  6. That is a different diagram used then the original one, and trust me everyone is teaching youth all the way to college with the "old-school" model famous for being out of order (7 tech inside shoulder of TE and 6 tech head up on TE and 9tech outside shoulder of TE) because the creator was drunk when he made it. Using the above diagram is not common. And yes you can two gap with a 3-4 end, but again this all depends on the coach because not everyone does. DE never really play a 3 tech in a 4-3 unless its a package, and again putting a DE at a 9 or 6 tech leaves you weak in the middle unless you stack LB over the guards to play the middle. Again the sacks are just a common stat I put, wasn't trying to overload the first post with stats. I agree for a 3-4 DE its not as huge and its def not everything.
  7. Haha was gonna bust a diagram out myself pretty soon
  8. Umm....A 6 technique is head up on the TE and a 7 technique is on the inside shoulder of the TE. I'm not sure where you are getting this from but head up on a tackle is a 4 technique and inside the tackle's shoulder is the 4i technique. In a 3-4 the ends are still lined up on the outside shade of the tackle because you will still want him containing the C gap and the OLB has the D gap in the run or man up with a slot reciever or covering a TE. The DE can slant into the tackle to take collapse gap therefor occupying the C and B gap, but that is slants and stunts that aren't always used depending on the team. Again you RARELY have DE playing a 9 tech in a 4-3 unless you are the Eagles as I said before because it is just too much space left open in the middle of the defense. Now I know and agree DE in a 3-4 are bigger (Ngata) and aren't going to get as many sacks which I think is your original point that their sack stats don't matter, but this question also invited people to throw into account other things such as Ngata's incredible strength that can blow a lineman back into the QB creating pressure or rushing lanes for the OLBs.
  9. Most 4-3 teams do use a 5 tech...we are talking lining up on the outside shoulder of the tackle to rush the passer and contain the edge you are right. In a 3-4 the JOB is different and depending on how the scheme is usually a end is in the same 5 tech outside of the shoulder of the tackle but tend to occupy the tackle for the outside rushers. A end in a 6 or 9 really depends on the scheme because someone has to be stacked over the interior lineman in order for that to work or you will give up the middle of your defense to runs and the Eagles are the only ones who come to mind that consistently run a wide 9 defense. SO in a even front I don't see what you mean they don't generally rush the passer? That's mostly what Peppers, Allen, JPP, and DEs like them do.

Best chance for worst to first?

Haha how am I spamming? I just like to see civil football talk with facts and debate and not a bunch of loss of rep because of past encounters and feuding. Some of the stuff people are losing rep for isn't THAT off the wall. If I'm wrong for that then my bad I joined for the wrong reason
  12. Depends if we are talking 5techs in a even or odd front. A 5tech in a odd front has the rush linebackers next to them to apply the pressure so they have to be more physical and play the run holding that C gap so no runs off the tackle and counter inside to make sure they aren't coming behind the tackle. But in the even front. Your backers are playing more coverage and aren't given the luxury to pass rush as much so you have to apply the pressure yourself. For example with the Bears Briggs isn't going to blitz alot so Peppers has to worry about getting to the QB solo no matter which side he is on. So in an even front sacks do matter IMO

    Brown's QB Competition

Not sure if there is a thread about this already, if it is oh well wouldn't be my first time duplicating. Anyways, watching the "Competition" coverage from the Browns camp has really been bothering me. According to Holmgren he came to McCoy before the draft and assured him he would not take a QB in the first round. I read the article and he went on to say they back McCoy fully. And then they draft Weeden and all indications are that they aren't giving McCoy a shot in hell to start. As much as they say the battle is open I'm hearing its Weeden's job to lose. How do you guys feel about the way the Browns have handled the QB position this off-season?

    Brown's QB Competition

Again if the Browns went ahead and made McCoy study under Weeden (who is older) then fine, I honestly think Weeden is more ready at this point. My main issue to bring up was the fairness of the whole thing. I hope at the end of the day McCoy is able to show he has more than what people are believing he does. BUT with that aside, I think it was just crazy how the Browns' organization handled the situation from McCoy's point of view.
  15. Oh no that's great logic because with two amazing ILBs you have the ability to really let those outside guys and DL go after the QB. Especially with Willis his speed and agility covering in a zone allows the rushers much more time to attack. This a very interesting twist to the best DL as far as football schematics go.

Best chance for worst to first?

Come on guys...I joined this site not too long ago cause it promised no trolls and no crap just football talk. If you want to smack talk then its a forum for that...otherwise lets just be football fans and DEBATE not ARGUE.(NO lost of rep for this! lol)
  18. I'm def considering rush linebackers into the conversation. And with the defense helping out Tebow a little last year (sarcasm) I have to say the Broncos front is not at all out of the top 15
  19. @RazorStar....AGREED, on another note I struggled deciding on the broncos...do you say they deserved to be mentioned?
  20. I honestly struggled when deciding to put the Bengals on the list....But in the end I think a big strength is in their depth rather than the starters and with some rookie DTs like Brandon Thompson and Devon Still I can't say if their depth is elite just yet.

    Does Stafford need Megatron?

^^^I just want to know how you see his career going without Megatron? I like your assessment. I think he wins without him, but not with the numbers he has put up.
  22. I'm gonna try reply to each post just cause I LOVE the D-Line its my passion so hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes. -The Giants have an amazing line. I'm a 4-3 guy, rush backers are great, but I want four guys down in the dirt and pulling off the technique that gets you on the highlights. The reason I'm a big fan of this line is the addition of Rogers. You imagine him taking on a double team in the middle and really letting their ends go at it 1-on-1 on the outside. We should see their run defense really improve.

    Seahawks QB Competition

Yeah I got Flynn who amazed at Green Bay, but I'm not counting out Wilson...I 100% believe Carroll is having a full out 3-way QB battle and Jackson just doesn't have that instinct as the leader of the offense I agree there. But Wilson was nothing short of amazing at Wisconsin after coming in as a transfer. He is undersized...but Brees is short and he proves if you rep the hell out of your accuracy you can overcome that stigma. So I have to say Flynn with the start and Wilson as a back-up. Sorry Tarvaris

Best chance for worst to first?

I got a close three between the Bucs, Chiefs, and Bills Bucs: Because they had the best draft agreed. And the talent level on that young team is through the roof, let Freeman take a breath and catch on to the new system and it could be scary. Oh yeah did I mention that added a top 2 guard (Nicks)to accompany joeseph and a top 15 receiver (Jackson)? Chiefs: This is a playoff team no question. Even with injuries you saw some players really make a leap into stardom (Hali, Johnson, Flowers) With a healthy squad and a solid draft class I have to say they are the popular pick to jump up. Bills: I'm a D-Line guy...it's what I play and what I coach and from a football stand point a great defensive line makes the linebackers and secondary look a helluva lot better! I think they have a top DL and this will elevate their defense at all levels. On offense you bring back a healthy Fred Jackson and hopefully Fitz can evolve as a QB you looking at a defensive control the game type of team

    Sophomore Slump?

Yeah when I hear or talk about sophomore slump I def think of positions other than QB, just because their are soo many variables that go along with that position and if you keep the same situation a QB usually can build or equal their rookie year. I think this slump applies more strongly to other positions like defensive line for example that is a position in which OL will start to study your moves and lock you down so you have to continue to add to weapons to your arsenal.
