Your last point hits the basis of my frustration with this whole thing and it is what I've been saying about fans bringing their anger to the NFL about something that is a matter of the legal system.

Also you hit the exact pulse of the whole story. The exact moment it became crazy is when Goodell went back and suspended Ray Rice a second time for the same offense. This is the point in which the league in essence said we are not strong in our convictions, we will throw a player under the bus to please the masses, AND most importantly it allows everyone to ask why didn't you feel this way at first? I've heard multiple shows interview NFL officials after the new rule change confirming that the new policy is retroactive to Ray Rice's suspension and his two games is final. Then you come out and do this. The new suspension opened up the floodgates.

It's just silly to think that they can say the suspension is final, and then go ahead and punish him again. As a sanctioning body, you would think they would have integrity in their rulings and stand behind their rulings as any legal system would. They need to be the leaders of the sport, not be the people who stand behind the masses of media and public opinions. It's just ridiculous at this point.

I got absolutely destroyed by someone I was having a conversation with because they felt what I said about it not being right for the NFL to dole out a new indefinite suspension - was basically me not being sensitive enough to domestic violence. That's not the case for me. I can say without a doubt he SHOULD have been suspended for the year, it gets the point across that it's not ok to be involved in this sort of thing. But why should the NFL have the power to change their ruling as they feel? I mean, they changed direction on this with one foul swoop. It was the flip of the switch.

I have a hard time believing too that Goodell didn't ever see that video before the initial ruling on the suspension.

I didn't know either so here it is.

I'm not sure what to think about this. Clearly some suspension is necessary, but I have to admit that I don't know what its like to be hit by this. Those cuts look bad, but does it actually hurt badly? I do think that hitting your child when they're acting bad isn't necessarily a bad thing but I don't know if this is excessive or not.

My family weren't "switch" users.. I've never seen one, but for us it was the wooden spoons like you would find in your kitchen drawers, if of course we did something bad enough to warrant it. I'm not saying it's right, I would NEVER do this to my daughter, but I'd have to imagine that the long wooden spoons felt about the same. I don't feel like it's child abuse. We always used to get welts and red marks from it. It set us straight though. Looks like he hit him in places that are more fatty on the body, which is actually the idea. The hands are pretty normal for old days too.

Again, I'm not saying it's right. I would never do this to my daughter or any future kids I may have. I used to hate getting hit with the spoon. But I will say, it kept me straight and I turned out absolutely fine. I don't feel like I was beaten or abused. I feel like my parents wanted to make sure I knew right from wrong, and right from VERY wrong.

This isn't any where close to the stature of the Ray Rice situation where he knocked his girlfriend out. This is something that used to be considered normal years ago. Now, in this time though, people freak out about it. You so much as swing your flat palmed hand past a kids face only swooshing air across their face and people cry foul. Children, teenagers, etc. don't learn life lessons and they don't learn wrong from right by standing in a corner or being shunned with words. If that was the case, we wouldn't be having so many problem with spoiled brat kids in the world.

I digress though. I know damn well when it comes down to it, I won't be able to instill that on my daughter. Damn, she's going to walk all over my sorry ass. <_<

  3. I feel like either Earnhardt or Harvick walk out of this year with the trophy. The 88 team has been great all year.

The 4 team has switched pit crews with the 14 team so that should help ease the bleeding they seem to have every week on pit lane. I think Harvick has had opportunity to win 4 or 5 more races this year before being destroyed by pit lane mistakes. Just sad.

I'm sure I'm not the first to say this, but this new rule was clearly more of a PR move than an actual policy.

And this is a huge problem for the NFL incoming. Their showing themselves to be followers as opposed to leaders. That's not good for the sport, and it's not good for the owners/Goodell.

I touched on it in the Ray Rice thread a little bit. The more the NFL caves into the public opinion, the closer they will get to a downward spiral.

  5. and yet Alex Smith lost his job while on pace to set the season record for QB rating

I'm not sure QB Rating really means a whole lot to football teams if they aren't winning football games.

I think a lot of the time though you can look at completion percentage as it compares to YPA.

  6. Great news. I don't think it's ever a good thing for an NFL team to uproot and leave their respective city. I think that having a guy as dedicated to the team as Pegula will end up being is going to be absolutely fantastic for the Bills. The idea of Bon Jovi owning the Bills made even myself cringe, it would have been one hell of a disaster.

This is off-topic but on topic at the same time, I'm starting to see it less and less likely an NFL team moving in the near future. Heck, even in the distant future right now. The Raiders have an obvious quest on their hands to try and move the team somewhere that they can control the entire market. I'm not sure that happens or not, but I think it's obvious they are trying to get something started in that respect. The Jaguars were another team that many thought could be possible for a future move, but I don't see it. Ticket sales were down, but man, I've seen Jacksonville fans in their own, those people are absolutely rabid down there. I don't think you can move that team without an absolute outcry lol.

  7. As I stated before, McClain has the talent to be a top linebacker in the league. He had shown it in his rookie year in the time he had actually been on field. The results weren't quite there, but the talent was obvious, and it still is IMO.

If they keep his head in the game, or rather, if he keeps his head in the game and has actually dedicated himself to his return, this could be the single biggest addition to the Cowboys moving forward.

  8. I really hope Antonio Brown has a great game tonight, as I have him on my fantasy team :D

However, I feel like Wheaton may have his big-time break out game. Guy has real talent to be a great receiver in the league. I think he goes for 80+ yards and 2 TD tonight. Brown will steal some targets, but I think Wheaton takes any red zone looks as their going to be keyed on Brown. The Ravens seem to always keep Brown in check.

  9. Not sure if it's been hit on yet in this conversation as I haven't read the whole thing, but maybe a real discussion about this should take place about "why Ray Rice?" Not in the sense of why the outburst after Rice's actions, I get that, a video DOES sort of make the actions hit home when you see it actually take place.

Now to my question, why Ray Rice... Think about this, let's all assume that the reports about Goodell having the video before he actually placed the 2 game suspension ARE indeed true. For what reason did Goodell chose to cover for Ray Rice. I mean, what is so special about Ray Rice right now?

Goodell is the law and order commissioner, or at least that's the title he's always sort of been given. This guy has gone out of his way to lay the hammer in a lot of cases, more so earlier in his run than recently. So for what reason does he risk his job for a player of Ray Rice's stature? You can say it's because everyone believe(d)(s) Rice is a good guy, or he's a likeable personality, he gives back, etc. But that doesn't put enough on Goodells plate to where you have to cover for him by with-holding an extremely bad video like this from everyone. Much more so especially when you consider that once any set of eyes sees that video, eventually it's going to get back to the public and the media. You know 99.9% of the time that everything eventually gets back to the public when it comes to media usage such as cameras and recordings.

Now back to a more practical side of the conversation.

Ray Rices actions are inexcusable, I don't want to get that confused with what I'm about to say here. I don't stand for any sort of domestic violence, I hate it. It's something I feel pretty strongly about. The NFL completely flopped on their original 2 game sentence, they came out and admitted it. However, I feel what they are doing now is wrong. After they realized what the public thought about their goof up with Rices sentence in the league, they decided to go ahead and change the league guidelines on domestic violence. Again, everything is fine to this point, and I think it's great! What happens next though is where I take a strong side and believe the NFL is wrongfully pursuing this issue further than they need to at this point. (In terms of punishment standing and resources, not in terms of the impact of domestic violence). The Ray Rice video is released, and the NFL quick does a 360 and decides to indefinitely suspend Ray Rice.

Why is this wrong? A couple of reasons, and it also shows their new guidelines don't add up to the general publics standards, or even their own standards as the NFL.

    1. They are now punishing Rice for the same offense twice. The original offense was deemed terrible, they gave him a 2 game suspension, which quickly caused a public out-cry among many circles.

    2. The NFL suspends Ray Rice indefinitely, despite this being his first time offense. (See below). What does this mean? See reason 1. They are punishing rice as a two time offender despite this all being the same first offense?

Penalties against players will now be a six-game suspension for a first offense and a banishment of at least one year for a second offense — under league policy, the players don’t have to be convicted of a crime to be punished. Goodell’s letter also outlines plans for league personnel to "undergo comprehensive training to help them understand and identify risk factors associated with domestic violence and sexual assault."

This is all just a huge cluster-f*** at this point. The NFL is doing exactly the wrong thing in this case. They are caving to the pressure of public opinion and media outbursts that they have dealt with in the past many times. This is a much more touchy subject at this point, even still, the NFL needs to decipher the correct punishments among themselves and dole them out. This is Roger Goodells job, not the publics, to punish players. The NFL is quickly showing that they in fact are not leaders as a powerhouse like this should be, rather the same sheep that everyone else in the sports industry is quickly becoming.

There are so many roads Ray Rice could take at this point, and whats to say he and his group of people don't fight back? His lawyers could demand that he be considered an unrestricted free agent after week 2, and he would probably very well win that argument based on the fact that the NFL hasn't got the power to punish someone for the same offense twice, regardless of being a place of employment or not. They have about the same rights in terms of punishments as the US Justice system has. It's not something that's allowed. Now, let's say it goes this route, that's fine no one will sign him to a team, right? Right. Then his lawyers could very well try and and claim collusion among the 32 NFL owners. This entire situation could take a serious turn and begin spinning even more out of control than it already is if Ray Rice and his lawyers take serious steps toward trying to get his career back on track in a quick manor.

I don't call for Goodells head in this instance. I don't believe that he will lose his job either, the owners are wholeheartedly supporting Goodell, and they are after-all his bosses. It's not his job to right the wrongs of society, that's up to the police departments and just departments of the states offenses take place. Ray Rice shoudl be punished by the courts at this point, not at his job for what he does in the off-season. It's tiresome to watch people keep insisting that Goodell be the mule for the social justice people continuously demand he dole out. Goodells real job is to make the NFL more profitable.

So, while the courts did have their hands tied in this case, it's still up to them to punish Ray Rice to the nature that the public wants. It's not Goodells place or the owners' to keep Rice from playing in the league again.

How many points will be scored between the Eagles and Colts? 43

  11. SJax is slow but I think the misfires we saw with Jackson were a result of missing all of camp and pre season. Give it a few weeks I think. I thought they did a great job mixing in all our backs yesterday.

  12. Saints win if Colston didn't fumble though.

If Colston doesn't fumble, maybe they win. Maybe they kick a field goal and we score a touchdown. The best thing about your assumption is that it's empty, and it doesn't matter. A win is a win.

Our offensive line, even without Jake Matthews, looked every bit renewed and fantastic.

Our defensive line was alright, but our linebacker coverage was killing us.

  13. What in the world KC?

I really think they should take fantasy football more seriously in Kansas City. They didn't give Charles the ball nearly enough.

Seriously though, is the Chiefs offensive line honestly that terrible? Or is the Titans D Line that good? That was brutal.

  14. For all of those who said the Falcons stood no chance, eat your crow.

    GoFalcons.

Matt Ryan looked like a different quarterback out there. His pocket presence looked greatly improved, he wasn't bothered by the pressure. White, Jones, Douglas and Hester are going to be a ridiculously tough core of receivers to stop. Hester isn't the greatest, but his speed alone had the Saints defense up in arms.

  15. Take me as biased or whatever way you'd like, but I think it's too easy to think the Saints are going to open some can on the Falcons.

Saints are the easy pick that all the experts are going with.

I'm going to point one thing out to you fellas - in 2013, our team was in absolute shambles. You can argue we were fine for week 1. But not for the second meeting. We were swept in both games, both on final game deciding drives. In September we lost 17-13, in November we lost 23-17.

Yeah, the Saints got better. They added Jarius Byrd to their secondary. I'm not sure that puts them suddenly light years ahead of the curve in the match-up. They added Brandon Cooks, an explosive playmaker, but they lost Darren Sproles. You'll find me hard-pressed to say that I'm any more afraid of what Cooks can do than I was Sproles, I think that's a wash as they gained what they lost.

New Orleans defense is solid, but they haven't got the secondary to cover Julio Jones and Roddy White - which by the way another point to make, NEVER played together healthy last season. I'm absolutely worried about the Falcons' pass protection, but it was a breath air to see that our starting line (with and without Baker) looks like it's going to produce some push in the run game. Jake Matthews at LT should help provide more protection than Baker ever could or would have on the blind side.

Falcons defense is porous and spotty, with a lot of question marks. I already mentioned I'm less worried about the pass rush. Even if you do want to say that it will be an absolute wash getting to Brees Sunday, our run defense is absolutely beefed up this year. One thing I've learned in match-ups with the Saints is that you can't let them throw AND run, you have to take away one to have a shot. Take away the run, make them pass. Pick your poison.

Biggest Match-Up: William Moore/Kroy Biermann vs Jimmy Graham

This is the big match-up in this game. Graham is one of the best receivers, forget tight ends, in the league. It's a big task to take on Graham on Sunday. You can't take Graham out of the game, so you look to limit the Saints' options with him. Don't allow the big play. New England and Seattle showed how to take Graham away from the Saints, get physical. He's big and strong, get in his face and play him, not the ball. Throw his route timing off, and you've got a good opportunity to limit his impact.

A note, Kroy Biermann was doing a great job in the season opener last year taking away JImmy Graham by getting physical with him off the line. Then he tore his Achilles...

I've got this game turning into an absolute shoot-out.

    34-31 FALCONS

Why? Because the healthy combination of Julio and Roddy make the difference we needed last season. Also, expect the Amoeba.

How many points will be scored between the Cardinals and Chargers?

    30

  17. Mike Nolan's 34 schemes have never relied on a single good pass rusher, or any real amazing talent. He puts multiple guys in position to get in the backfield. We've got Biermann back, Massaqoui has looked like a breath of fresh air from the edge, Hageman has looked every part of untapped potential so far. Tie that in with the big men we signed to clog holes, we won't be some dominant force, but middle of the road absolutely.

Our biggest problem on defense is linebacker coverage. Not pass rush. You all put too much stock into the talking heads opinions.
